Location: DUMPING CATS AND PIGS IN TEXAS :) | Looking for blankets for a few of my horses. We live in LA so it doesn't get extremely cold, but I would like a good quality blanket that is weather resistant. I bought a Weatherbeeta and like it, but the price was $125. Just wondering if there are other more economical blankets out there as I would like to purchase 4 or 5 of them. |

Ok. I'll look. Thanks.
What are the better blankets? I'm only familiar with a Weatherbeeta lol. This is new territory for me. |

Location: God's country...aka TEXAS | I've tried several brands and Weatherbeeta holds up the best. They rip less and there are less issues with straps etc. My horses are TOUGH on blankets. I swear they think its contest to see who can tear theirs up first. lol $125 is on the low end for a quality blanket so I don't know how much cheaper you can find one without compromising a lot of quality. |

That's good to know. I really like the blanket we bought. I may just have to buy one at a time until I get them all covered. The one I bought was from Tractor Supply and I find that their prices are a little high on a lot of things, so that had me wondering if there was a quality blanket for a little cheaper. Thanks. |

Location: In The Snow, AZ | I would definitely check out Ebay. I was looking for an extra blanket before winter. Thank God I bought one because hubby bought me a horse that has been in Phx, AZ weather, blanketed and under lights his entire life. Needless to say, he's pretty much hairless. Coming up to 0-20* temps was scary.
I actually ordered from TackMarket. I'm not sure how well known they are, but I got a 1200D 400 fill, rip stop, waterproof heavy weight turnout blanket for $65. It has held up wonderful thus far. Plus, they come in vibrant, eye popping patterns. http://stores.ebay.com/Tackmarket
Just a thought! Good luck in your search. I know what you mean on the prices. They can hurt when you need more than one. |

| I agree with Weatherbeeta. The Saxon blankets are not near as expensive as some of their lines, and all of mine have held up extremely well. The best place that I've found price wise is Chicks Saddlery, or if you can wait until spring/summer you can usually stock up on some closeouts at different places. |

I've had really good luck with Saxon as well. I bought my four this style: http://m.horse.com/item/saxon-1200d-high-neck-250g-turnout-chestnut...
The high neck covers quite a bit of the neck and helps prevent any pressure/pulling on the wither. The only downside is the sides of Saxon are cut fairly short. Mine cover just below the bottoms of their bellies. When I cross the belly straps it pulls the sides pretty snug around their bellies. They stay in place really well though and mine love to lay down to nap throughout the day so they get up and down quite a bit. I usually adjust the rear an inch or two when I feed but no major shifting at all. |

Location: KS | The best one I have ever had was a Defender. I haven't been able to find them, but they didn't have fiberfil in them. three buckle with snap closures on the front. They were only like $50 and I have had this one for 5 years and only one small tear at the seam for back leg strap.
I also like Tough One blankets and they are very reasonable.

Go with the higher denier...they will be more water repellent and tougher to tear. It's worth a little extra cost when the blanket lasts much longer. I have bought from SS tack in the past...and this year I got a great 1200 Denier midweight turnout blanket for a really great price from www.horseloverz.com
It's even orange with Camo trim! Great for a smallish horse living in the national forest dueing deer hunting season

| Nice price ... I personally don't like the stable blankets b/c of the lack of gussets for movement in the shoulders. So, I choose the turnout blankets and prevent that problem. However, if they're just hanging out in a stall with it on, that one should do the trick.
ETA- I've had rub marks and missing hair from the stable blankets before :)

Also keep in mind if you decide to go with a closed front blanket to make sure your horses will tolerate it always going over their head....I never undo the fronts of my blankets for any of our horses, mostly because I'm lazy, but there are some that just won't tolerate it.

Location: In The Land of Cotton | I actually had to call Schneiders and talk to the rep. I told her the body style of the horse. Then told her I wanted the cheapest medium weight/waterproofed one. She was extremely helpful and found me one. I had certain criteria. I wanted no front hooks - head slip over type, and a belly band.
Try that. |

| I got talked into my first Schneiders blanket this winter and I am not disappointed.
1680d and I got medium fill. I really wish they had their liners in stock because I'd love to have one right now for this frigid stuff. I plan to get one as soon as they are back in stock and then he will have a sheet and the medum weight blanket and the liner to mix with them, pretty good set up I think.
Eta - his sheet is a weatherbeeta from tsc that I had to buy in a pinch 2 years ago, it's held up pretty well |

| I bought a few of these lastt year and they are still going strong this year! http://statelinetack.com/item/defender-1680d-high-neck-turnout-shee... of my horses fell through the ice on our pond yesterday and this blanket kept him relatively dry! The only complaint I have is one of my horses breaks the snaps on the front, but I just took the snaps off and looped it through to avoid that problem. Out of 4, I only had the problem with one horse, so I think he was just hard on them. But no rips or tears in anything. .. and cheap! |

I second the Ebay/TACKRUS blankets. I took a chance on one of the heavyweight 1200D blankets and have been very happy with it. It was $83 or $86 with free shipping. (note, that horse is turned out in a pen with quite a bit of thornapple and it is still in perfect shape!).
I will probably be buying more unless I come across a killer deal on something. |

2 of mine are 4 years old and still as waterproof as they were the first day and they are worn daily during the winter. We get quite a bit of snow and wind here when the storms blow in and last week it was below zero w/ highs in the low teens, 60mph winds and blowing snow. My horses were toasty and dry in their tough-1's. For here we get the waterproof heavy weight w/ 300 grams of fill. |

| This is a lil off topic but I've always hated slinkys until we got a horse in the barn with the full body one from sstack. It is wonderful, easy to deal with and very durable. I like it adds an extra layer BUT still wicks moisture away from the body. We will be purchasing one of these for each of our personal horses next winter. |

Location: hot, humid and dry...Gulf coast East of Houston.. | I have used Wetherbeetas, Tough 1's and also a few of the Open Range ones from Smith Brothers. As far as quality for price, the Tough 1 and the Open range one are just as good as the more expensive Weatherbeetas. I have had all of mine for several years, and just this year had to re waterproof them. Mine are all out in the pasture, and sometimes we get some monsoons when it rains. I have been pretty happy with them all, but I actually like the fit of the Weatherbeetas the least. They do hold up good, and stay in position, but I dont like the way the fit at the top of the neck.. It seems like they could get pretty uncomfortable if they are wearing them for a long period of time. Also, they have the buckles that attach in the front.. They are a PITA to buckle and unbuckle when your fingers are freezing. I like the snap closure of the Open range and Tough 1.. |

Location: In my own world | I have tried a zillion blankets trying to find "the one". So far my fave is the Horsewear Mio. You can get them from state line tack for $85. They are only a 600d. But I've had mine 2 yrs and my horses go outside. The thing I like is they don't have leg straps!! They have a butt strap that you don't have to buckle or unbuckle. The blanket does stay in place. It has never slipped on my mate and she lays down a lot. Dislike the T straps on the front. I like the ones with snaps. However my Weatherbetta that I tried that has the snaps. Well the snap broke after 2 months use. They are replaceable but still a pain. T strap buckles are harder but never fail!! |

| I've had great luck with tough-1's. I have been using a stable blanket 600 Denier for about 6 years OUTSIDE in rain and snow, and they finally gave out this year. Got a new tough-1 but a nice 1200 Denier 300g fill coming in the mail today! Super excited. Of course I ordered ONE before my other horse ripped his so now I need two :) Their snuggit neck style ones that are new are very nice. There's a seller on eBay named greenrivertack and she was great and good prices. |
