| A girlfriend of mine is looking for a new job and has narrowed down where she would like to live to Colorado and Wyoming. She runs barrels and ropes so she is looking for an area that has regular jackpots, open rodeos, etc. I told her I would check on here to see what people thought... Ready... Go! Thanks in advance :) |

Location: Somewhere around here | I live in CO and I like the idea of moving to WY (just for a change of scenery) but I am a wimp when it comes to the cold! The southern part of CO (everything south of Denver basically) will be warmer but might be a little harder to be closer to barrel races unless you lived by CO Springs or Denver. I do like the CO barrel races and Mile High Barrel Racing Assoc. does pretty good with their races. They are getting bigger every year but I wish they would have more locations for their races. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I am near Lusk WY and we are 80's June and then July it gets into the 90's and Aug for a week or 10 days will hit 104 sometimes. No humidity, no rain (lol usually) and no barrel races. Lots of roping though it seems. I am 2 1/2 hrs from Casper (lots of wind/few barrel races) Rapid City (fun fun town, lots of barrel racing) and Torrington is 2 hrs and has a lot of barrel racing and roping with a super nice indoor arena. They are hot and humid though all summer long. Sheridan is the paradise of WY, but they do get a winter. Not sure of barrel races. Cheyenne is windy and cold, but the summers are gorgeous. Some barrel racing, but Torrington is only 1 1/2 hrs, Laramie just a little under an hour and Ft collins CO as well. I gew up in Chey until I moved here at 19. I don't do the big cities so could never gut CO. But I know the front range of CO has a lot of horse events.

My in-laws live in Cokeville, Wy. Those people have to be tough, they were all out snowmobiling during Christmas in -20 degree mornings. But on the other hand Wyoming does have big bucks (as in deer, not dollars). Anybody want to see some deer pictures? |

-20 that is an Indian Summer haha. Where is Cokeville? We have really nice bucks here too (obviously not dollars lol) but the biggest with those thick bases and black horns are in the mountains. My dad always called them timber bucks. Laramie, Medicine Bow is where we hunted when I was a kid. |

Location: Buffalo, Wyoming | I live in Buffalo WY. We are pretty much 2 hours from anything Casper, Rapid, Billings but there are barrel races everywhere in those 2 hours. We are 35 minutes from Sheridan and there isn't much for barrel racing there. Buffalo is kind of a banana belt as far as the winter goes but we do get -20 weather often. I would not suggest moving to Buffalo if you are looking for a job. There is little to nothing here, I was very lucky to find my job.
If she is wanting to be close to rodeos/barrel races I would say Colorado. |

Oh yes,I know where that is. I have been to Yellowstone once and we went into ID to visit friends of my grandparents and came back in by Evanston and some cheese factory that was delish! Then across the no man's land of WY, Riverton and through Casper back home. Most of WY is gorgeous except that which was given to the Reservation. |

| After living in Laramie for 2 years ... you couldn't pay me to move there!! LOL. Something about that much snow just got to me - mind you previous to that I lived in South Dakota (east side) and it was cold too but somehow a bit more bareable.
I really like the Ft Collins to Loveland area! It was like mecca when we'd haul down there and would continually be warmer by 10 degrees or more than Laramie!!
Good Luck! It isn't for the faint of heart! |

I'm from eastern SD as well and went to college in Laramie...I always thought Laramie's cold was easier to take than Aberdeen's! The air is so much drier out there!
Laramie to Fort Collins is a HUGE difference in climate...it's crazy what a difference an hour's drive makes. |

The western slope has weekly rodeos during the summer and racing in the rockies and nbha. Avon, Snowmass, Carbondale, Fruita all have summer rodeo series. Winter there is barrel races. |

Ugh don't get me started on the horse flys and mosquitoes! They are ridiculous from June to August in randolph! Not sure which is worse the bugs or cold!!
We had -30 last week with the wind chill, but we were 30 degrees yesterday morning! lol
If you're looking at wyoming I'd love close to the utah border, utah has great races and quite a few ropings. But it's pretty hard to keep horses going through the winter. It can be don't but it's not much fun.
And yes we get big bucks! This time of the year they are east of randolph and have migrated to the Utah side.
They are fun to go look at.

Location: Lewisburg, Tennessee | Pretty accurate description everyone has given. I've lived in both Wyoming (Casper for 20 years) and Colorado Springs (for about 1 year), and am finally back to my home state of Tennessee! Here's my 2 cents worth:
We still have property in Wyoming but I have no intention of ever living there again. You have maybe 2-3 months of summer and then winter...and the wind blows constantly. Imagine trying to put groceries in your car and the wind is blowing so hard that it slams the door before you can get them loaded. I"m not even kidding, it blows like that...30 mph is a typical day. The wind makes everything harder, like blowing off your saddle pad before you can get saddled. I used to watch how far my horse's tails were blowing between their hind legs as a gauge on whether I'd ride that day. Don't even get me started on the wind in the winter. After you've shoveled yourself out of your driveway in the morning, by the time you come home from work, it's all drifted again.
As far as races go, Casper has a indoor barn but not many races as they charged too much (at least they did when I lived there). There were no races really within 1.5 to 2 hours from Casper, I would typically haul to Douglas, Wheatland and Cheyenne.
I begrudgingly liked southern Colorado. The weather was mild (all the bad snow storms stopped at Denver). We lived sorta in the country between Colorado Springs and Falcon. There seemed to be something to go to all the time for roping or barrel racing. Fountain, Colorado had a nice outdoor pen and Penrose hosted some nice bigger indoor races. The cost of living was a little higher and of course there was more traffic and people than Wyoming.
If you could stand the wind, I'd say Cheyenne is your best bet. You still have the low taxes, pretty low cost of living, but are 30-45 minutes from Ft. Collins and Loveland, Colorado. CSU and The Ranch are really nice places for barrel races and ropings (not to mention shopping and restaurants in that area as well).
Hope that helps!

I gotta say that the prettiest part of the Wind River Range was given to the reservation- it always chapped by a$$ that I couldn't get on that without an indian guide. Anyway, to answer the OP's question, I would definitely favor Colorado over Wyoming to live any day. I lived in Wyoming for 23 years and everything is hard there- you drive hours to a barrel race, you drive to Colorado for a vet, and you drive on ice 6 months of the year- and if it's not ice, it's 50-60 mile wind gusts smackin your trailer the whole way. I swear when they created the southern border of Wyoming, they drew it where the wind stopped and called what was beyond it "Colorado." |

I swear when they created the southern border of Wyoming, they drew it where the wind stopped and called what was beyond it "Colorado."
That pretty much sums it up in a nutshell! |

| Ditto on driving on ice or in 50 mph winds. Not fun for pulling a trailer in winter which is pretty much October to April! Front Range of CO is nice, but expensive. |

Riverton or Lander WY has races near by and is pretty mild for WY. Durango CO i hear is good too....
Lived in Durango for awhile. They have a great NBHA series as well as Farmington NM, 45 miles away. Beautiful, no wind, winters seemed warm but lots of snow. Covered arenas open in the winter but not alot of scheduled races.
Lived in Laramie, BRRR. The front range of Colorado has a ton of horse activities, but also alot of people and higher prices. |

Location: North Dakota | I agree with Wyodrumrunner. Hubby and I lived in Casper for 6 years (where I met the lovely Wyodrumrunner) and then moved back to ND 8 years ago. I miss my friends, barrel racing friends, and my job, but nothing else. Good hay was hard to come by and expensive, you had to haul into the bumblies just to go to a jackpot, good vets and farriers were hard to come by, winter was long and the wind...oh the wind was horrible. We are talking rip your car door off and blow over your semi, wind. ND can get pretty gusty, but it doesn't hold a candle to Wyoming.
I would never move back unless I absolutely had to.

| I live in the southwest corner of Wyoming. I love it. I love that I can be riding my horse through the sagebrush in a matter of seconds. Our fairgrounds are for the most part open to the public for free. Yes, you have to travel some to go to races but we have local NBHA/other club races most of the year, it doesn't completely shut down. For the bigger added money races you do have to travel to either Utah or Colorado. The wind is not that bad but maybe I am use to it...it keeps what we do get for bugs down. You couldn't pay me enough money to live in Colorado. Wyoming is obviously not for everyone : ) |

Which is one of the HUGE reasons I wish to stay here forever. My only other place I love is the Black Hills but I don't do tourists. I love the fact that we have so few illegals and so few people that it has to weed out the crazies. If only they could eliminate the welfare, it is pretty high :/ then WY would be perfect, if it isn't already |

I don't think I could ever leave Wyoming either. I am from Utah and lived there for 24 years, I don't really ever want to live in Utah again. We are looking to move closer to home (currently 9 hours away) but I want to stay in Wyoming. |
