Location: Central Texas | So, progress on building my barn is coming along and now I need to find a few things.... looking for the best bang for my buck...
1. Where can I find the tracks for the sliding doors. I'm talking the big alley way sliders...I can only find the ones for the stall doors which are not long enough, is there a bracket or fitting that will connect several tracks together? Alley is 12 ft wide so two 6 ft wide doors sliding = 24 ft of track....right?
2. What is the best stall door latch? I have a horse that is a bit of a houdini. I'm not buying any of the premade stall fronts or doors...I'm building it all myself. Definate learning curves along the way...I've never built anything this big. There is an older gentleman that lives up the road and he walks his dog by my place everyday.....he actually stopped the other day and told me "it looks really good...even for being built by two girls." LOL |

No idea on the track but are you thinking of these type of latches? We had these and would put snaps through the "key" and that kept all our escapees in :)

Location: Central Texas | Yes the entrance doors. Two 6ft doors side by side = 12 foot of door and each sliding away from each other means I need another 6ft of track on each side for a total of 24 ft. I can only find 8ft sections so was wondering if there were places to buy longer tracks or if there were connectors. Local hardware store looked at me like I had three heads when I asked. Maybe it's a stupid question but like I said I am not a builder and I'm learning as I go. |

Thanks!!! And those look like they might work....I have different ones right now and Caddy has figured out how to open the two that lead to the backyard. |

As I do this in my mind..and it's old so bare with me. You may have to buy the 8ft sections and cut them the length you need. They also make a bracket type thing you put where the sections connect to make sure the door stays in the track. |

Yes that's what I was thinking but googling bracket type connector thing was not working out for me LOL. At least I know I'm not crazy and it is something that probably exists I just need a name for it. |

BUT, here is some advice from someone who's had every kind of door known to mankind. put in a roll up door, (or a regular garage door) if the horses have access to the door with their butts put in a wood or insulated one. I know you probably never have snow, but I hated my slide by doors because if they are too close to the ground they stink, look around before you put the doors in, make sure..... |

Don't forget to get a guide rail/track for the bottom of your doors to keep them from swinging out. Ours run the same length as the top track so the door stays tight against the barn when open. We live in the wind capital of the world (lol) and those doors would have been long gone without that track keeping them from swinging.
Our barn was only a year or two old when we bought our place and the people that built it lined the inside of the door way frame with carpet and it makes a world of difference keeping the wind and snow out and sealing off around the door. They did a lot of weird random things with carpet (have found it all over our pens and outbuildings) but that was actually a smart idea. |

Thanks! I have just found my new favorite store. I have never heard of Menards but now I wish we had one. I did look at the roll up doors but since I was set on the sliders I didnt really set myself up to have room for the tracks for a roll up door. The doors will be wood because I have zero welding skills. I did put a metal roof on the barn but that was my first attempt at dealing with metal. |

Thanks! I will be so glad when it's all finished but I will be proud to be able to say, "I built that!" Ha Ha Caddy was on my crap list for awhile....three times in one week I came home to find him lounging in the backyard and drinking out of the pool. The gates are now like Fort Knox which is a pain when you have your hands full and are trying to get one open. |

Thank you. That is interesting about the carpet. Like regular house carpet or the outdoor type stuff? |
