Tell me what Yall think. I weaned my SNS colt from his dam on September 1st. We brought her back to the pasture with him & 3 other mares in early December and after all that time, he still tried nursing. She kicked at him a few times but he was persistent and she eventually let him. So I took her away. Again. I've only ever had one other mare to have babies for me and every time I introduced her back to her foals, they did fine and went on like they knew each other but weren't like mom and kid. That's definitely the opposite of this mare and baby. I think the problem is that he recognizes her. She's the only big, flashy paint around here. I don't think she has any milk but her bag is still kinda big. Idk.

We had a barrel race last spring that my 12 year old gelding and his momma were at together. We were standing there chatting and they sniffed noses. Then he started doing the gum flapping, opening his mouth thing that foals do to their mommas. It was quite amusing. It's not like he went on to nurse, but he definitely recognized her as his mom. So I'd say it might just take some extra time for your foal to grow up.

Mine are back together after being separated a few months. My mare is dry, but the filly did try to sneak in some nursing the first couple of days they were together. Didn't take her long to realize there was nothing there.

I weaned my filly in October and put her back with her mama in a group 2.5 months later. She never did try to nurse after that and if she would have tried her mama would have definitely not allowed it. I've had some in the past that needed to be apart for several months tho.

I agree if the mare is not trying to corect the foal when he tries to nurse separate them a lil longer. I had my filly separated for a few months. Turned her back in with the mare heard and she tried to nurse but momma said hell no

my first horse at the age of 2 would still try to nurse. I'm not really sure what went on there, if he ever was truly weaned or not. last I knew he was still moms baby boy and they always take to each other kindly.
