When you start your off the track QHs do you start back in an o-ring snaffle? I am riding 2, 1 is doing great in it and is very quiet, very soft in the mouth. The other was a little more forward than I would like and I did not feel like I had much. I rode both in a thin twisted o ring. I would like to stay in an o ring but I really need to get the 2nd horse backed off before I'll feel comfortable in it. He ran more on the track and is more acclimated to pushing on the bit and forward motion. Any suggestions? Changing bits, hitting up, riding in a running martingale?

This is going to sound crazy but I'd actually go with a thicker smooth mouth piece on the snaffle for the one your having trouble with and see if it doesn't fix your problem. Sometimes that thin twisted mouth piece on one thats had more than a few outs can freak them out a little.

Haha I'll try it. I'm down for almost* anything. I just really don't want to have to start with anything bigger than an o-ring going this slow.

Another option might to be to move to a mild hack, something like a little S hack. This can take being "up in the bit", which is part of being a race horse, out of the equation.

I honestly liked Clifford and Streak best in a short shank bit right off. Cliff had been ridden in a correction bit before I got him (he was in the feedlot for a while) and I'm not sure what turnlane and her husband rode Streak in after they rehabbed him. I think I started riding Cliff in a Mike Beers short shank chain mouth bit because it didn't have the same action as an o-ring so he didn't automatically think about pushing on it.
