I have a mare for sale that's no longer riding sound. I board my 3 horses and having one sitting around getting fat for $150 a month just isn't working. I have had TWO people offer me nice sounding blue roan colts in trade for her. The first one I turned down, saying I was trying to thin out the herd...but then it happened again and I'm very weak! I asked for more info on this one. She's a 2013 blue roan filly. Gotta find out if she's registered. Anyways if she checks out in that department...I don't know....I need someone to tell me not to do this lol! I've never started a horse or owned one younger than 6. I've ridden a couple 3yr olds but someone else had been working w/ them. I really want to learn more about training young ones though. It's intimidating but you have to start somewhere right? I'd like to find somebody with more knowledge to help guide me, especially if/when we hit bumps in the road. I think I need to be talked out of this but I don't really want to be. Thanks for letting me vent.

That is true, but she will actually be useful (in a little while anyway) where as the other is just doing nothing. I'm ok with spending the $ on a riding horse but with the other horse I may as well be setting $150 on fire every month.

I don't know what to tell you...the "I do not need another horse" chant didn't work for me. I now have my mare and a 3 y/o gelding...and I love them both. But, especially since it is winter, sometimes I think it would be nice to be back to one horse, but then again I love both of them. Also, I'm kind of on a phasing out plan...I plan on phasing my mare out in a couple of years from main barrel horse to trail rider, occasional barrel race, mostly broodmare status, and using my gelding as my barrel horse (should things work right for a change, LOL).  So, I go back and forth, but ultimately I plan on keeping them both.

So in other words, my advice would be to get more info on the blue roan filly, if she's something you like or you could turn into a profit down the road if she doesn't fit and she's registered with some decent lines, then by all means trade. But if you don't have a "feeling" for her, pass.

She'll have to meet quite a few specs and will have BIG shoes to fill as I've gotten very spoiled w/my gelding lol. The good thing is one of my 3 is only ridden by my sister now so in a few months I won't be paying for him.

ditto.  I am at the same point.  I have an older mare I wont be able to run much longer so bought a young one to replace her.   But sometimes I think two is too many for me right now.  But don't want to sell the older mare because I am attached and she is the only one I can go run right now.  But don't want to sell the young one because I know I wont be able to run my older mare much longer.....

BUT  I really think it sounds like it may be better to try and sell your mare and have some time with just your gelding.  Then if you still think you want another horse use the money to buy a prospect.  as they say "Do as I say, not as I do" hahahahahaha

If it wasn't your goal in selling to get another horse I would not trade. Even if you did plan to sell & then buy something else is an unstarted 2 year old what you wanted? I've been offered many trades on horses I've sold in the past & never taken them because what the other people had did not fit my needs at that moment. You are better off to sell and then shop for exactly the horse you where looking for.
I love young horses, but I've also been training them for the last 15 years. For me the reward is in watching them progress from a baby to a nice finished horse. But it takes an incredible amount of work, dedication & time to accomplish that. And if you aren't able to commit the time yourself or have the knowledge of starting young ones that translates into lots of money spent on a good trainer. You'd be spending close to $1000 a month for training. That adds up fast and there are no guarantee's you'll even like the horse once it's riding. Young horses work out great for some people and others end up investing a LOT of money & end up taking a huge loss on a horse that didn't work.

since you are in the same state as Sara Jean .... maybe get her opinion on this young one and see if SHE would take it for training!  I can vouch that she does an amazing job with the young ones & you would not be disappointed.  Now - Sara if you are not taking outside horses anymore, you can pound me next time you see me!

She's also 14 hands....I am 5'11" she'd have to mature to at least 15 hands.

I would definitely think hard on this one as I can see potential in her. She has color, and the breeding could be something to contend with. If you got her, rode her, maybe even barrel raced on her (those bloodlines are gritty, I think she'd make a good candidate for barrels, or almost anything), then cross her on almost any speed bred stud...my oh my, I'd look at a baby like that. JMO.

You do know you are on the wrong forum if you want to be talked out of buying another horse, LOL.  I could try to brush up on the good cop, bad cop routine. Let me try this:

You don't need another horse, think of what it would cost in hay, board, vet fees, farrier care, training fees...if you aren't see $$$ signs yet, let's go with worming supplements, grain, entry fees. You don't need nor do you want another horse...they're just a money drain.

How was that???

I'm ready to start shooting again to.....hopefully we get winter practices going in Mandan again!
I've actually retired from taking outside horses since I started traveling more with shooting. I'm not home enough during the summer now to ride them with the consistency that I want. So now I just ride my own & life is so much easier!

Rockyroad - 2015-01-13 3:20 PM since you are in the same state as Sara Jean .... maybe get her opinion on this young one and see if SHE would take it for training!  I can vouch that she does an amazing job with the young ones & you would not be disappointed.  Now - Sara if you are not taking outside horses anymore, you can pound me next time you see me!
Yeah we're in the same area. I actually almost bought a really nice 4yr old from her one time!
LOL speaking of that colt......A friend of mine actually owned him. I just bought him & he's going to start shooting training as soon as it's nice out!
Oh nice! I can't wait to start shooting off Cash again.

Oh and uh...do you take outside horses? I figured I better ask just in case...

I'm ready to start shooting again to.....hopefully we get winter practices going in Mandan again!
I've actually retired from taking outside horses since I started traveling more with shooting. I'm not home enough during the summer now to ride them with the consistency that I want. So now I just ride my own & life is so much easier!

Right on. I'll just have to (maybe) hunt some other poor soul down lol. I'm fairly confident in my groundwork teaching skills, as I've done that with completely green horses before. It's just backing and those first rides that are outside my realm. Where is practice held in Mandan?

A few rolls of stamps and you can mail her to me

Lol she sounds like a sweet heart too. The guy said she's pretty cuddly/friendly.

Got pictures of her. She's cute. Fluffy and dirty but cute. I'm going to look at her next week. I am so weak. I'm not allowed to post them am I?

If you get her I'll get you the info for a guy that worked with the one I just bought, he has him about as close to bomb proof as you can get.
We do the winter practices at Prairie Skies Arena north of Mandan.

That would be fabulous. What would I do without you and all your connections? :)
