Curious to see everyone's "barn on a budget!" Moving my mare's to my own property by end of year but we don't have a building to house them in besides an old corn crib (which really isn't condusive to housing horses). Any suggestions? What did you do to house your horses when you had a small budget to work with?  Thanks!

I bought one of the pole barn kits, used metal panels to make stalls and walled in a small feed room under it. Spent maybe $4000.

Disclaimer - this is not my ACTUAL shed, but the handy SO built me one just like it. Complete with red and white paint.

ETA - It cost a couple grand in materials and a weekend of time.

I really like my barn because, El Scorcho can stand in it and gaze at the stars should he so desire. It's almost like having a sun roof.

My budget barn ending up being 15k. It's a 30x40, 3 stalls (two foaling stalls), water, and electric ran to it. We did all the work ourselves too. I found that in trying to save money, I just decided to go all out and get what I really wanted.

Super easy. Mine were two metal pieces which bolted together in the middle, set on top of the 6x6s and bolted to the post. The hardest part about the trusses was getting them up there.

Looks like this:

We used square tubing to build a lean too. We enclosed the sides with old barn metal and painted it one color. The front is open some for drafts in the summer but also has part of the front enclosed so the horses can get warm in the corner if the wind tries blowing in the front of the "barn". We drilled panels to the square tubing so they are high in case the horses roll and we put pig wire on the panels so if they kick they hit the pig mesh panel and not the actual panel/get stuck etc. We have 3 12 x 12  stalls and enough room for the trailer to fit inside if we dismantle a stall in the front. We spent about 2500 on materials as they were used. My SO welded them for me in his spare time so that cost me a few sandwhiches and pitvhers of sweet tea, but it was worth it I guess LOL

Thanks so much for all the responses.  The one thing we have to keep in mind is that it gets pretty cold where we live. I contacted one place about one of those "modular" barns. Guy asked where we live and when I told him our location, he said I was best off with a stick built building due to winds, snow loads, cold, etc.

We live in Central IL and we get some pretty cold nights, live in the wide open so winds gust through here pretty good. We don't always get a lot of snow but enough, so need a barn that will provide them with enought protection.

If you don't mind me asking, those of you who had a small pole barn put up, how much did a contractor charge you? I'm sure the price varies by state/location but just curious.

Those of you who built the barn yourself, did you find the overall process pretty difficult?

Okay couple questions!

1) Did it cost you an arm and a leg? Because a couple of the modulars I priced out were just as expensive (sometimes more) than a post frame building from a place like FBI or Morton.

2) I refuse to pay to have any sort of concrete poured so, is your barn secured to the ground? I can't tell from your pics. The thought of a barn just "sitting" there scares me! lol

3) Obviously you get cold & snow, do you find it to be secure enough inside from snow/drafts, etc?

4) Who did you order your barn from?

We had a barn built by Cleary about 7-8 years ago.  I can not remember the exaxt price but I am thinking it was around $17,000.  That included the dirt work and all insulation.  My boyfriend at the time built the stall for us.

We had great service from them and they even came back out this last year to fix some of the insulation.

This barn was built in Utah but I see a ton of their trucks all over Wyoming where I currently live.

After posting, I was looking closer at the pic and wondered about that.  I wouldn't mind having to do concrete for the posts but we definitely cant afford to have a full concrete pad poured or a concrete foundation.

We bought old Chicken house trusses (steel) and built ours that way. We built a 40x60 barn at a $125 per truss totalling 12 trusses. That is not counting the tin or the lumber. It maybe something you consider.

p.s.i priced out every option i could think of and this was by far the cheapest up here...it took them 4 days to put it up and it usually takes them 3 but we got hit by a snowstorm

Wow! Three to four days assembly would be amazing!

Okay, well if it's warm enough where you are then I'd say it should work here in IL. :)

Maybe I'll have to look into steel modulars more closely & do a little more research on them. thanks so much!

My Dad, husband and I bought a  24X 96 pole barn and we each took half for $2000 total.  (tearing down that building was it's own kind of torture) We scavenged some garage doors and did all of this ourselves.  our finished barn is a closed lean 24 x 42 will hold 5 10x 10 stalls (I only feed in them and very rarely keep a horse. with plenty of room for a round bale, 100 squares and a feeding area.)  My tack is in a different building closer to the house.  It has electricity and the water is 20 feet from the door.  I don't think we have $2000 total into this, but, I have to admit we can build almost anything.  I've put tin on more buildings than I care to admit.  BUT, if you are on a budget, you either need to learn how or go without until you can afford someone else to do it :)  It's not real pretty but I love my barn-wish it was twice the size.

We're in the process of having one built by DTC Barn Builders. It's a 36x40 and we're adding a 12 ft lean to on the side the slider doors are on.  It's just going to have 3 stalls and a tack room so I have room for some square bales on one side.  They bid it at 11,600 but we aren't doing the wainscoting.

Chicken house trusses are pretty regional. Here in SW Missouri we see them on Craigslist all the time.
You might search your local Craigslist farm and garden section for trusses and see what turns up.

We got lucky with ours.  When we bought our current property it had a 30 by 40 foot metal building already on it.  Full concrete floor.  I did NOT like the idea of them on concrete, but we made do with it.  Hubby literally build the entire of the inside, stalls and all, 100 percent by himself.  From March 29th of 2013 until June 2013 when I came out with the horses.  And with mats down, the concrete has been a blessing.  The horses don't seem the least bit bothered by it at all.

Right now on our craigslist, there are 2 40ft by 100 foot chicken houses for sale for $5250 each. It's unclear to me if they are already taken apart or not. They are a bit short for horses, but a construction friend of mine says you can put them on a concrete footing to make them taller or build a stem wall (I think is what he called it)

Here's a 60 foot long for $3250

Hmmm, good ole' Craigslist.  I'll have to look into that and see if I can find any near by!

missroselee - 2015-01-13 6:43 PM We got lucky with ours.

Wow!! Very lucky!! That's a nice building!!

Unfortunately there were only two building on our property when we moved here.  There's an old corn crib that would cost probably just as much to convert as it would to build new. And there was an old barn on the property. Had concrete blocks about 4-5 ft up and then wood rest of the way. Had a HUGE loft and would have been a nice barn had the prior owners maintained it.  The roof had a huge hole in it for many years and the rain and elements had rotted the trusses. On top of that, the owners had decided to try and convert it to a body shop and cut through important supporting beams and had things dangeroulsy "rigged up."  So yet another building that would have required a small fortune to make useable.  We just recently knocked the barn down this August to make room for a new building. But I suppose that's what ya gotta work with when you purchase a foreclosure home. On the plus side we got a place in the country, by a dirt road (perfect to exercise horses down), on 5 acres for an incredible price.  So, silver lining I suppose!

newracer - 2015-01-13 3:54 PM We're in the process of having one built by DTC Barn Builders. It's a 36x40 and we're adding a 12 ft lean to on the side the slider doors are on.  It's just going to have 3 stalls and a tack room so I have room for some square bales on one side.  They bid it at 11,600 but we aren't doing the wainscoting.
Wow! Is that just for the building, labor only, or building & labor?

Building and labor but we will do the inside ourselves, build the stalls, wiring, concrete, etc.

I have two of these buildings. This is the first one that I had built. It is actually 2 two car carports together. It cost about $2000. It has room for 3- 12 X 12 stalls but I only put up two stalls in it the other one has 2-10 X 12 stalls in it. It is HOT here and I did not want walls but you can have them closed in any way you want.

The second one I had built in another pasture is a two car carport which is actually almost as big as the first one. Cost about $1000. I found a guy on craigslist to build it so much cheaper.

The first building withstood hurricane winds of around 80 mph with absolutely no damage. Who in the heck would have thought we would have had a hurricane in NORTH EAST TX??? I hope I never have to go through that again.

TACKyPaints - 2015-01-13 2:08 PM We've discussed buying a small pole barn kit but my husband thinks doing the trusses will be a pain....any opinions on that for those of you that built your own?

We built our own and it was a LOT of work - the next time, I would at LEAST buy a nail gun. We hammered all the nails by HAND. We had a 30 X 40 pole barn kit from Sutherlands.

I could write an entire book on building your own barn. LOL I've been working on mine for 9 months. It's a lot of work but in the end I will come out way cheaper. I have done every bit of the work myself including clearing the land and building the pad. Dug the holes for the post with a small tractor and then finished them out by hand. I have been saving and hoarding materials for close to a year so that I didnt have to come up with all of the money at one time.  Mine looks a lot like LRQHS right now except I have a raised center aisle type of roof and I am only two pieces of metal away from having the roof completed. I debated a long time and watched a lot of videos on how to do the roof. I decided to go ahead and make my own trusses. They weren't as hard as I thought they were going to be.....the hard part was getting them up there. I enlisted the help of a couple friends and discovered these giant rubber squeeze clamps that held them in place until we could get them lined up and nailed. (I did invest in a nail gun)
We have a couple of metal manufacturers close to me and I was able to get R panels at a 1.00 a linear foot. I discovered that most of them have a scratch and dent section if you ask. I didn't mind if they had a few scratches....the horses won't care and the only way you could see it was if you were standing on my roof. ( the roof is the only place I'm using the metal...the sides will be wood) I didn't get to have a lot of choices on color but for the cost savings I didn't care.
I'm still not done but I am on track to finish right at $5000.  That is for 3- 12x12 stalls and a 12x12 feed/tack room and a 12 ft alley.
At some point I will sit down and put all my pictures and videos in order.
Craigslist has also been helpful. I managed to get an exterior door in great shape for FREE and that will be the door to my feed and tack room. I got a couple of other doors for super cheap and I'm still deciding on how and where I'm going to use them.
I'm off for 4 days this weekend and we are supposed to finally have some nice weather so I'm hoping to get the last two sheets on the roof and start getting some walls up!
I have never built anything this big in my life (disclaimer: I am not new to power tools and have built a couple small sheds and furniture items) If you have any building knowledge at all you can do it yourself and save a ton of money.

We have one like this. We used telephone poles for the corners and the framed it all in. We also brought out the front of the roof at an angle so there is some hangover. use panels to make runs. Works good only took a weekend to get done. The poles where free, tin was free, and we asked a farmer for some wood out of an old, caved in barn, the only thing we had to buy was a few 2x4's, 2x6's, plywood, and tar paper. I think we spent, maybe $500-$700.

No we didn't save any of it. We were going to but most of the wood was very dry rotted. Our corn crib has a bunch of lumber stacked in the bins though so we are hoping to use some of that.

I love this thread. Such great ideas. Here's my barn. It was built out of old pallats that my husband found behind the feed store. We didn't buy a single thing. That's right-$0 invested. The stalls all have lazy susans in them so that the horses don't even have to move their feet to turn around. They poop in a special bucket that uses vacuum suction to suck the turds up thru a system of plastic tubes (think Habitrail or the bank drive thru) to move it to an outside manure dumpster. We have skylights and fans too.  When we build our next one I am going to leave the palm trees out -every time I go to the barn, my horse wants a drink with a little umbrella in it.

Our barn is no where near done but we do have a roof on it so that is a plus! Barn is 36 x 60 with a 12 x 60 shed coming off the side, we plan on having (4) 12 x 32 runs on the shed side. Husband got a quote from different builders in our area and the cheapest was $13,000 to get it right where it is in pictures (I don't have a photo with metal on the roof for some reason). So we decided to just build it ourselves and as of right now we only have $6000 into it. Hopefully will have metal going up in the next few weeks. My husband is quite the handy man, he doesn't give his self enough credit!

Wow! Love seeing everyone's barns! Thank you so much for sharing them with me! Very much appreciated!

I'm all for trying to build one ourselves but I don't think I'm going to sell my hubby on the idea :/ Pfft! Lol

trobertson - 2015-01-13 3:41 PM We bought old Chicken house trusses (steel) and built ours that way. We built a 40x60 barn at a $125 per truss totalling 12 trusses. That is not counting the tin or the lumber. It maybe something you consider.

At my mom's we used the same for trusses.  We used drill stem pipe to gain more height-that we traded a FREE horse for!  We bought tin for the roof and sides, leaving about a 2 foot gap for airflow-it's HOT in LA.  Our stalls are wood built out of bulk roughcut lumber bundles from a sawmill a couple hours away.  Super cheap.  My grandpa built all 7 stalls (we had 7 horses and my mom refused to have an extra stall-she's no idiot LOL).  We have a feed/tack room with rubber mates put down as a floor.  We also built the whole thing up with a clay pad.

For those of you that converted chicken houses how did you connect the leg extensions to get extra hight?  Do you have any pictures?  Thanks

We also bought used chicken house trusses (steel) and put used tin on the roof. Then new tin on the sides etc. My husband planned on doing it all himself but just didn't have time so we paid somebody to do it. We haven't gotten the inside finished yet.

Here's one before we put the sides on. Obviously, I wasn't taking a picture of the barn...

ETA: Got it resized.

I live in northern MN and built a barn when we first got our land, its a 40x36 with a 16x36 upstairs, went with a local contractor and am very happy with it. We paid 23K for it put up, we did the insualtion and stalls ourselves, no telling how much we have in it now, but its been a process over the last few years. My horses come in for grain, I used it for 1.5 months while my horse was on stall rest, but it doesnt get much more use than that, as far as horses go. We have a 12x16 3 sided lean to, we used scrap plywood for the walls and bought new tin for the roof, the horses use it to get our of the wind and do fine. I do blanket my horses up here.

This was while it was being built or was "completed".
