I understand the basic concept (for certain, young-aged horses, etc), but I don't really know how the whole "eligibility" thing works. I am somewhat interested in trying it out down the road (i have a yearling and the topic has come up if i will futurity on her)... just poking my nose around now trying to figure it out!

To keep it simple, horses cannot be entered in any barrel race before December 1 of their there year old year. There are 4 year old futurities and 5 year old futurities. Horses probably need to be registered but they do mouth them when you check in. Check the rules for each futurity for registration requirements. Hope that helps.

Some Futurities only allow 4 yr old futurity horses and some allow 4 and 5 yr olds. You need to look at dates on pmts of Futurities bc you have to start paying way in advance.
