Location: Kentucky | I recently lost my trusted vet due to a transfer she took in another country. I have another vet I use in case of emergencies and for check ups/coggins/etc. however, no one to really trust on diagnosing EPM. Do you have to get a prescription from a vet in order to treat EPM? I have a feeling my mare has it, but the symptoms are so vague, I feel like the majority of vets would just shrug it off as her 'being a mare', even though I know it's not the case. |

| I would try to find a vet that will do the bloodwork to send to Pathogenes. If she comes back positive, then I don't see how they could deny ordering the treatment and chalking it off as something else. The vet that I use for most horse related problems is a 6 hour drive from me, but my local cow vet who does coggins for me was willing to do the bloodwork and send the results to my other vet. He also ordered the treatment for me without any fuss. |

This ^ and even Pathogenes are better if you talk to them after they have reviewed the bloodwork. My gelding came back as not really having EPM but after calling to better understand why they wanted him to try Orogin, she got more details on the horse and we feel he has an ongoing inflammation proplem causing his neuro and other issues. He cut his foot badly last April. So instead of ordering the $200+ Orogin, we are trying the $68 Neuroquel. |

Thank you! I see if my "new" vet will send a sample to Pathogenes. I've heard good things from them. I'm hoping they won't lead me astray, just to sell me something though. |

That is one of the best things about them. Their recommended treatments are cheaper than some others and they have a smaller % of relapse. She wanted to know what state I was in, (WY and really no possoms) and that the horse came from OR, also smaller chances of EPM. She wanted some back ground and as soon as I told her the states and that he cut his foot, she was sure with his blood work results, we were not dealing with EPM. If I understand correctly, both drugs help inflammation, but the EPM does other things so she saved me a lot of money. Fingers crossed this fixes him. She said of the 10 cases in WY and OR sent to her, both states also only had 3 come back with positive for EPM. |

Interesting. Thank you for that! I'm going to call my vet and see if she can come out this week. |

Location: Beggs, OK | I've had horses tested through Pathogenes that did not need treatment. They don't just send you numbers so that you'll order the meds. I've had excellent results with Orogin and will be testing and treating a few more soon. |

Thank you for the feedback. I'm so used to someone trying to "sell" me something that I am always on the defense.
Hopefully my vet will send bloodwork to them. I don't think I'll have a problem with her pulling the blood, but if she has never heard of/used Pathogenes before, I may to sweet talk her, or give her a bottle of bourbon or something.... |

My vet here knows NADA about EPM so I just told him I wanted him to pull blood, had this form all filled out and ready and told him the address to send the blood was on it. I even had the credit card info filled out. He kind of didn't have a choice. http://pathogenes.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/ELISA-Submission-Form.pdf |

Location: God's country | My vet had pulled blood from my horse she suspected had EPM. The next night the horse colicked and died. However, I had another horse that I had treated with the sulfa meds who was diagnosed with EPM but no blood was ever pulled. She went ahead and ordered from Pathogenes without sending any bloodwork. I treated this horse with the Orogin and Neuroquil and she is almost 100% recovered. Good luck! |
