I know mixing feeds probably is not common. Each has its own vitamin package and you don't want to double up or OD one on something. But My 3 year old looks AMAZING on Ultium but has a little to much energy for the amount of work he is doing. But he is a bit of a hard keeper. I tried him on Safechoice origional and he looked good but wasnt holding weight. I was hoping I could mix a little of each and it might be the perfect combo for him. Im not feeding the recommended amounts of either one so I don't think he will get to much of any one vitamin etc. Is anyone mixing feeds? Oh, Rice bran or any of the supplements just don't do as well as the ultium. Thanks!

I know using Ultium on a horse when they aren't working hard, makes my horses get hot. I can't have them on it if I'm not racing at least 1-2 times a week and riding in between. My boy is also a hard keeper. When is he isn't running or working real hard during summer, alfalfa and Strategy GX makes him look and feel wonderful. But I'm not sure about the Safechoice. I just kinda went on my own little story...oops!

When I was feeding Nutrena Safechoice the rep told me to add Empower because I was doing the same thing and supplementing with Ultium. I did love the combo and you can control the added fat/energy by upping or decreasing the empower amount but it got to be far too expensive in my area for as many as I was feeding this combo too.
The ingredient that makes a horse hot is sugar. Starches in feed are changed to sugar. This raises the sugar in the blood giving the horse an excessive amount of energy. Feeds high in sugar or"sticky" have plenty of sugar already.
