We are getting ready to rebuild our house that the tornado destroyed. Rather than build a house and a barn separately, we are looking at combining the two. Anybody live in a house with the barn attached? Any pros/cons that you have discovered?

Wow, I lost my entire farming operation, and my home in '06 to a tornado. We only saved a mattress from the house. I don't know how long ago your was, but if you just need someone that understands, I am here.

I lost 2 barns, and home was severely damaged in April of '14. So I've been there twice.

My barn and house are attached, and if I had it to do over I would not do it. Lots of dirt to constantly clean comes in from the barn. I have a mud room that is a big help, but still a battle. Mine has an indoor arena in the middle and stalls down the sides, the house is at one end.I do like being able to peek out and see the horses if they are in the barn, or run out in pjs and feed if I have to.

NO but I think it's a great idea. I heard of one in Minnesota where the house was built into the side of a hill. The bottom level was the barn the next level had the garage and the top 2 were the house. I thought it was great not to have to leave the house to feed the horses. I was never inside it just saw it and you could kind of tell from the road that is what it was.

We did that when we were in Brady.  Our barn was 50X60.  The apartment was on one side and we put the stalls with runs on the opposite.  I wish we could have picked it up and moved it.  It was all metal.  I wish I had some pictures.

Make sure it is well insulated, safely wired, and has two exits in case of a barn fire.

The good insulation is key as otherwise, you will lose heat like crazy, depending upon where you live of course.

I live in one, house/barn/arena. You can read about it in the previous thread that the above poster put up. It is great for us. I hate the cold weather so not having to go outside is the best. I never have a reason to miss riding because of the indoor arena. I do agree about the dust factor and also agree about the good insulation. I love it because we can hear everything that goes on in the barn which has proved to save my horses life as of late. At first, it bothered me living so close to them and kept me awake at night but 20 years later I know the difference in a feed tub banging on the wall and someone being cast. There is a layout that I posted in my album that you can look at if your interested. It will give you some ideas.

One thing I would change: I would add people doors, one from the garage to the outside and one from the barn area to the outside. If you have any other questions you can just ask. Always glad to help out.

I would do it.  Keep looking and getting ideas.  Google all you can.  I think way too many people over build their houses and when they get older (if they plan on staying put), they are stuck with a huge house to take care of.   After the kids are gone etc.

Good luck, I am sure it will be nice.

We are actually do that same thing! We spoke with our builder and he is drawing up the plans. I told him exactly what and how I wanted it. If it turns out like I have in my mind, the house will be less than 1500sq ft. 2-3 bedrooms 1 1/2 baths, attach to a barn (pole building) with an indoor riding area. (Size depends on cost and we havent heard back on that yet) id like to have lean the lenth of the barn on both side. One side to put a few stalls and the other just a shed row style for horses to get under. That way everyone has shelter but it doesnt take space out of my riding area :) Hoping to start building this summer.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions. We are still getting ideas and trying to figure out what is affordable. We were hit by the El Reno, OK tornado in 2013. We had just moved into the house 3 weeks prior to the tornado. We managed to find some of our things but all of our furniture and clothing was a total loss. Our horse trailer survived with minor damage and the horses had minor cuts and scrapes. It's been an interesting and frustrating journey.

I'm in love with this one!! I'd have to get the large 72 foot option to accommodate all my hay burners ... and I think it's super affordable for this option if you look at building a house and then a barn separate. You could easily turn the large one into a 3 bedroom home upstairs I think too. The work shop with loft space we are looking to buy is costing us 40000 for just the structure alone and its only 30by40... .

How about metal buildings, like to see some pictures that yall made houses out of. I have a acre and half. Want to put a cheap house on it to sell.
