Location: Opelousas, LA | I have not been to a sale barn in years, what would a fairly old looking (20+) mare bring per pound?
Before anyone jumps on me about selling a sweet old mare to the kill buyers, she is not mine, yet. Can't believe I am even considering this but I think she deserves a chance, I need my head examined, lol.
I will come back and explain later if I get her, just don't want to pay more than I have to in case she doesn't work out. |

Location: SW MO | In Dec at a local sale here loose horses were bring pretty good money.
I know someone who took an old crippled mare and sold her without her papers. She just ran through loose at the end of the sale & she brought $525 |

| I think it's a about .30/lb but since Europe stopped taking meat from Mexico I'm not sure what's going to happen to the price. |

I have issues with selling kill/cull horses and in the back of my mind thinking they are jammed in a trailer for several hours and for that price they can live forever at my house as much as my family grumbles..I dont care. |

| I ran in to a man at a truck stop who told me his son was a killer buyer and that he was making a killing. The price of horse meat was up and there are still lots of horses around here looking for free homes or priced cheap. I have no idea as how to check what he was telling me or where the son was shipping to slaughter. It just made me sad to see all those unfortunate horses on Craig's List posted by unsuspecting sellers. |

| Several months ago we sold a 5 year old, very healthy gelding as a loose horse. Before anyone jumps me, this horse was dangerous. We gave him a chance and he tried to kill us on a regular basis. He sold with papers and brought $450, did not go to a kill buyer, so they weren't willing to give that much for one in good condition. I wouldn't expect more than a couple hundred dollars for an old mare. If they are pricing her higher than that you would probably be better off to go sit at the sale barn if they are planning to take her there and get her bought at the cheaper price. |

I had to put down my daughters barrel horse and I can tell that is not easy either. The process of shooting one and digging the hole and putting them in it stays with you a long time. I know it was the best thing for him as he was really going down hill. It is more cruel to let them starve to death than to let them go to the kill buyers. We can't save them all. |

I really tried to help that guy. I'm assuming his issues were man-made based on the history I got of him. Soaked his feet for a week to clear up the abbesses, fed him, brushed him, etc. And every time he saw me coming he went on the fight. Decided my life was worth more than his!
Sorry to get off topic! But I wanted to say that you have a good heart for wanting to help out an old mare that doesn't deserve to end her life like that.

This one is not fat, she is older but I think part of her problem is she is just not getting proper care, looks much older than I think she is. She won't bring that much and I am certain she will be on a kill truck if I don't get her. |

Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | At the sale here there going for $50-$100. Very cheap. The last one we went to the most expensive horse there was a $80 pony. I was told the killer buyer that goes to that particular sale is selling them to slaughter for $1,000 for the nice fat and heathy ones.

There's a guy in Florida that takes a lot. I've been to his place. He takes decent care of them. If there sick he'll have a vet see them and he feeds them good. |

thats what makes me sad...and to top it off i was traveling behind a known kill buyer from an auction, and there were more horses in his goosneck than should have been...and the horse in the back looked like it must have belonged to some young girl. It mane and forelock where braided so pretty with a little pink ribbon in his forelock. |

Thats sucks!! slaughter is necessary I agree but right now its a horrible way to go.. long hours on truck and most overloaded ..
like that last one that flipped and wrecked.. to many horses in trailer..
I feel like shooting a older one is better then hauling to killbuyer.. but Op isnt doing that shes asking about a mare that may go to them.? i think |

Location: Opelousas, LA | I got her, she was hungry and needs groceries but she has no problem chewing hay so I am hoping I can get some weight on her. I think the people that had her take decent care of thier horses, not sure why she looks so bad. Hoping it is just because she is an older mare and they didn't know enough to give her the extra care she needed.
I almost missed her, they were hooked up and getting ready to load her and head to the sale barn. Glad I got her, she is super sweet and seems to love my kids. I will come back and post pics later. |

Location: The edge of no where | So glad you got her! I know packing houses are needed, but I want them in the states where it's regulated. It breaks my heart for an old horse that's always been good to wind up there. Hopefully some groceries and having her teeth checked will make a world of difference. It amazes me sometimes what my husband finds doing teeth - last place people look. |

I went and looked at a pony for my kids from my parents friends from way back, knew she was well broke and older... I told my husband she had to come home with us no matter what because she was so skinny, no way she would have made it through the winter at the rate she was going. Their other two horses were decent and they said they were graining her, Im guessing it was no where near the amount I am feeding her. Guessing she is around 25-30. Hard of hearing and looks to have vison issues.. but shes sweet. We picked her up on the 21st of Decemeber and she looked like CRAP. Now almost a month later she no longer looks like a rack of bones but now just thin. She eats fine, Im not sure how much hay she is able to eat but shes on sr feed and doing great. Thanks for taking this mare in!!! |

Location: Opelousas, LA | Unfortunately we had room for one more because my oldest sons awesome horse passed away two weeks ago, I went to look at this mare because I need to find my son another horse. Turns out she was WAY misrepresented so I politely passed on her, but I was pretty mad I wasted my time and fuel. The owner texted me on Friday to tell me she was going to the sale barn and if I was still interested to make him an offer.
I do understand there is a need for kill buyers and sale barns but I just can not comprehend how you can justify selling an old horse that has safely carried your child around for the past three years to the killers. I really try not to judge others because you just never know what they are dealing with but I just don't get how the little bit of money that will go in your pocket is worth seeing a sweet old mare packed in to a truck headed to Mexico.
Anyways, I am glad I got her, I guess everything happens for a reason. Thanks for the encouragement and hopefully I will be able to post some pictures of a fat, happy old mare in a few months.
