I'm just wondering what are some good barrel saddle brands around $650? I'm looking to get a new saddle soon & I'm wanting to get one around that price so that I can also get a new pad & other tack. I need one with full QH bars, 14" seat to fit me & my broad shouldered & lowish withered QH mare. I'd also like to hear from some short legged people lol because I ALWAYS have to cut my fenders to fit me, I'm 5'4" but have short legs so if anyone knows of a good saddle for shorter legs, that would be awesome. Can't wait to hear from y'all. Thanks.

What about Corriente saddles? Good or bad? Would they fit a wide horse? I see that they're in my price range.

A better investment would be to buy a nice saddle that is used (to get it down to your price range). That way you'd have the quality, without having to sacrifice.

A good first barrel saddle with good quality and moderately priced would be a used pro rider or a frontier. You can find a nice used frontier and I think you can even order a frontier for $800 base price.

Use a nylon breast collar for awhile and headstall for awhile, get you a used professionals choice pad, some used boots and a used frontier. You can get all of this for a lil over $1k if you are thrifty.

Do not spend big money on a tack set starting out. Its better to invest in a quality saddle.

Corriente saddles are very nice for the money. They fit most horses and I see them on ebay etc used for more than a new one so they old their value.

Second this, nice saddles for the money. (meant to quote on the Corriente's.)

You can get on the used barrel pages on FB and find saddles all day long under 1000.

I think Steinhoff saddles are a great value. Their trees seem to fit really well.

I would look for an older Shiloh.  They are a great riding, balanced saddle and they last forever.  Shiloh has offered several different trees through the years and some will absolutely fit a wider backed horse.

I have a Trent Ward I bought used but it was in brand new shape. I love it. If you buy anything that is quality used and you want it right now, you are going to pay upwards of $1,000 or better. You can buy the Circle Y used saddles for less but honestly I think the quality of leather is pretty poor in comparison to other saddles of the same value.

I canned a Reinsman FX by Dale Martin a few years ago for $900. It was in amazing shape but I needed a bigger seat and I needed it now. My mom bought an almost brand new Martin Iron Horse for $800. You can find them you just have to look for a long time.

I really like the way the Corrientes fit. I have a mare with wide shoulders and no wither and it stays in place without having to pull down so tight I feel like she can't breath. I also have a gelding who has a long funny wither but pretty wide where shoulders. It fits him like a dream! I also like they feel too me. I think if you want a new saddle, Corriente is good quality for the money.

Corrientes also seem to hold their value extremely well once they are used. I have seen them sell for new or better priced as used saddles.

I second a Shiloh. You can find an older used one for a good price. They are well made and fit most horses. I recently bought a used Ed Wright to ride my colts in and I love it.

Like some of the others have said I would try to find an used quality saddle. But if you want a new one Corriente's are nice. Every saddle maker has different sized trees for their saddles. You will need to talk to the people at corriente and tell them the build of your horse and I'm sure they can recommend the right one for you. I would recommend going through them directly vs going through a dealer.

You won't get a double j under $1000.. I think I saw one once for exactly $1000 and it was so old and barely rideable... Too many other nice saddle for a double j to be worth it if you're on a budget. Not dissing double j at all, but they are very pricey and a good solid used one will be anywhere from $1200-$1800 for a plain jane depending on model.

Facebook is a great way to look for barrel saddles, as is this website. Just search used barrel racing saddles for sale, and rodeo tack swap is a great page. If you pm me exactly what you are looking for I might be able to find something and I can help make sure you get the saddle at a fair price.

not true. I've seen a few older Charmayne James Double J's go for under 1000. They get snatched up quick, though. There are several FB groups; barrel saddles for sale and wanted, barrel racing tack swap, etc. that have quite a few nicer used saddles around $1000. It may take awhile but I'm sure you'll find a good deal! A few years ago I got an almost new double J Lynn Mckenzie for $1100.

I gotta agree. Sometimes you can snag a good, used Double J saddle for less than $1000. Sometimes they are trophy saddles, but so far from what I have seen the trophy saddles are just as well made as regular Double J's. IMHO.

I would also look at Courts saddles. I have one, they are well made and my FQHB fits my wide mare really well. I'm 5'6" and my stirrups could be set even shorter, so for stirrup length one might work for you and you can get them under $1000 a lot of the time.

Double J has the price tag but they are just a production line saddle, don't just settle for junk because your on a budget, if you search long enough you can find a nice used saddle that may not be new but why put junk on your horse? Just down the road from Double J is Ammerman, not a production line saddle,
Ammerman builds a nice saddle and if you will search there are some older ones listed that are priced right.

OK I'm gonna look into some used ones also but what do y'all think about an Ekto Seven by American Saddlery, from online reviews people seem to like them & they say they fit a wider horse & are good quality for the price, anybody have experience with these?

This is the ekto seven, it says it only has Quarter Horse bars but the reviews says it fits wide horses good & the slender, high withered ones not so good, which would be good in my case.

I second this.  Right now there's an older Cecil Phillips on FB for $650.  I'll try to find the link.

I LOVE my older Cecil Phillips!
I paid $500.00 for mine used, in 1997. I have won over $25.000. in it!
I am still riding it to this day , and am winning $$ on Brother Dave in this saddle..
I wouldn't hesitate to get another!
