| Has anyone ever had a farrier refuse to work on your horses after they find out what vet you use? My farrier got really upset with me when I did not call him right away about an abscess. My vet was going to be in the area on a Wednesday and I found the abscess on a Saturday night so I soaked and treated it and have vet take a look Wednesday. When I told the farrier what vet I used the farrier started going off on how they dislike this vet so much and refuses to work with them, and has dropped clients because he is a primary vet at certain barns. By the way the vet is a very good large animal and lameness vet, very knowledgeable. |

I can imagine that happening if the farrier is not as good as he likes to think he is and the vet knows it and is not shy about telling people. |

| This vet travels from a couple hours away to my area every other week and I actually help him so I have a good relationship with him. I actually called and asked him if something happened and he said no I have no idea. That he thinks said farrier does a pretty good job and that there is only one thing he doesn't agree with. The farrier is one that thinks outside the box a bit and has come up with a "cure" for founder. My vet does not think that this actually works. As far as I know he doesn't say anything bad about farrier or his "cure" unless directly asked about said "cure" and the only thing he says about it is I don't think it works....
I was just floored when farrier got all upset. I like the farrier, he was always on time and anal about making sure angles where the same and what they should be for the horse. He was also very patient with one of my horses that has a bad knee and has a hard time standing on it when her other feet are being trimmed. |

| So you have a few options then
Find a new vet
Find a new farrier
Be honest with farrier and let chips fall where they may
Or use same farrier and never speak of vet again to farrier while continue to still use said vet |

| I am finding a new farrier. This farrier was very unprofessional. I just have never heard of a farrier dropping clientele because of the vet they use. |

Thank you for sharing NJJ. I was looking for others who might have experienced this on either side. I do believe that my vet is competent when it comes to sickness and feet. Your post gave an insight as to where he might be coming from. The farriers main complaint at least to me was that the vet is old school and goes by the "books" and the "books" are wrong and he (the farrier) is right.
Edited to add that he did not give me a GOOD reason such as witnessing harm of a horse via this vet.

Shoeing and corrective shoeing has evolved over the years and maybe he and your vet butted heads about something. More than likely, he probably resents the vet telling anyone (even if it is only when asked) that his "cure" doesn't work.....lol |

Exactly! He did not appreciate my telling him he was acting very unprofessional especially pertaining to talking bad about another professional. After that he called me a liar which just proved my point on his lack of professionalism. So I deleted his number from my phone. No to find another |

| I would be curious to hear what NJJ's husband thinks about his founder cure product any anyone else who is a farrier or is knowlegable about horses feet. Is out against the rules to post what the product is called?

I believe you could post it under product research.
In general his product may work for some horses, and may not for others, just like humans, some swear by naturalpathic remedies, and others say it is hogwash.
As for how you handled the farrier, just remember especially in a small town, in boarding stables, etc people talk, you may have difficulty finding a competent farrier.
I know in my area, farriers will drop people for less trivial things then what you experienced, there are way more clients then farriers where I am from, so they can be choosy. |

Which is why the farrier shouldn't be mouthing the vet! Hope he doesn't need sedatives anytime soon. Word gets around... Even if the OP has a hard time finding another farrier, I think it's good to choose the higher road. No need to support someone who runs others down. Sounds like everyone will be happier by dissolving this relationship. |

I am not sure why I would have a hard time getting on another farriers schedule.(finding a farrier I like might be difficult) I did not do anything wrong. I did not bad mouth anyone. I am disappointed how this turned out since I liked my farriers work. And I am not trying to bash his product. I am just not very knowlegable on feet and was curious as to what others thought. |

You said he accused you of lying.
If other farriers ask him his opinion of what it is like to work on your horses, if you left things in a negative way, calling him unprofessional is negative even if it is true, this can make farriers run the other way.
I know around here farriers and horse trainers the good ones have their clientele and are asking around about new potential clients.
As to the person sorry I can't think of who it is who said hopefully he doesn't need sedatitive.
If the vet is selling sedititve such as ketamine and rompin to a non vet is selling drugs illegally and needs to reported to the veterinary association. |

Wait! He claims to have a Product that cures laminitis? Or a method or series of methods? Trust me, if he had invented a cure-all he would be rich right now because this is the number two killer of horses around the world. (Colic being number one)
We were told in school there would be strife with vets because the vet spent a whole week in vet school studying the equine hoof and they had to study how apply drugs to the problems... The course I took was 20 weeks and they had two other longer courses. One of them being an entire year. In the years since I gave it up due to an injury I've forgotten more than most unschooled/shade-tree farriers will ever know. And tons of new things have been learned and invented.I don't claim to know it all... I'm so far behind I would not even take it up again without some kind of refresher course. I can still shape a shoe with most of them tho. I picked up on that faster than anyone in my class. |

Location: Abbotsford B.C. Canada | If your farrier cannot work with your vet drop the farrier . Eventually you will need both being capable of helping your horse in a difficult situation and you cannot have this kind of adult day care behavior jeapodizing the health of your horse. You need a crew that is all pulling on the same oar so to speak. I work with horses with abscesses that actually were a preliminary sign of Cushing's /laminitis so I think you are very smart to have a vet look at the probelm anyways, especially since he was handy. Seedy toe is a sign of underlying endocrine problems and widening of the white line is as well. A farrier cannot know it all and in fact is not qualified to dignose all hoof health issues but certainly is part of the team and their input is critical . Coastal rider |

| that is the problem. HE refuses to work on my horses because of the vet I go to. While trimming my horse he was saying that he had dropped other clients because of the vet that they use(same vet). I told him I really liked how he takes care of my horses and that I like my vet when I have needed him. He scheduled another appointment then the next day texted me and said I will need to find a new farrier because he wont work on the SAME horses as this vet does. Not come out at the same time as the vet is there, but just flat out will not work on a horse that this vet see's. |

Yes this guy definatly has quiet the ego. His way is the only way. It is very unfortunat . A big ego gets in the way of so much. |
