I gradually was switching my mare from sweet feed to Renew Gold. Once I finally (several weeks), started feeding just the RG, she stopped eating the feed. She gets a lot of brome and isn't being worked hard in the winter so she's okay but the sweet feed makes her way too hot, and I will want to grain when I start hauling in the Spring. Any thoughts?? I figure eventually she'll break down and eat it but what if she won't? This is the second horse I have had that just will NOT eat a pellet feed.

Did you switch all at once or gradually?

Well, I learned a long time ago, just because I think something is a great idea it doesn't always mean my horses will think it's great.  I've also learned that the herd mentality is a great one if all animals in the herd are the same :)  I have one odd ball and I live my life to serve him hahaha.
So for some serious advice:  like the above poster commented, if you did like I do and switched everyone all at once-go back and start slower, feed at least half of your old ration with half of the new ration and then slowly decrease the old and increase the new.
REad your horses a little better.....mine WILL NOT eat pellets of any way shape or form-seriously, I've left them for over 2 weeks without any other option for grain and finally I kicked the dirt and went back to my whole grains (which goes to show they must be better
I know for a fact no one will starve themselves to death, but they might come close haha!

As I stated in my original post, I gradually switched, over the course of several weeks.

Wow, I thougt I had the only 2 that will not eat pellets! So much for spending $30 for ONE bag on this " fabulous" feed. Sheesh, I really can't go back to the sweet feed as she gets too hot, I honestly don't know what else to do.

Can you find some good alfalfa and switch out bagged feed altogether?  I did that with my guys and they've never looked or performed better.  Better acting and thinking too.  My looky-lou barely keeps an eye on 'things' now.

It took my two some time to happily switch, would you be happy to go cold turkey off of sugar? I know I would probably need to be committed. Try and add just a small handfull of the sweet feed into the renew for just a while longer. The one horse I switched was on sweet feed for a LONG time and he was my hardest switch. Now I have three on it and they love it. They clean it up everyday, but at first I was very frustrated and ready to give up.

What about just a handle full of plain oats mixed in? Less sugar than the sweet feed but still gives her some grain. Does she like slurpy mush? I had one that like water to make it mushy.

I would add some sweet feed to it. Still much better having a small amount of sweet feed with the Renew Gold rather then a lot of sweet feed and no Renew Gold.

I just went through this with a mare who had only had sweet feed. When she got to our house we switched over do adm seniorglo. She ate a few bites was not impressed then went off her feed. I mixed in a little apple sauce then slowly weaned her off the apple sauce now she gobbles it right up

I kind of have this problem with my one horse and beet pulp/alfalfa pellets. He'd been on dry cob his whole life and he's been on the beet pulp/alfalfa pellets over a year now and he DOES eat it, but he snorts at it first and moves things around like he's looking for grain.

I mix some alfalfa pellets and a bit of beef pulp (since they are used to bp) and wet it sown some.  One mare loves it with apple cider vinergar.

And remember...Renew Gold offers a money back guarantee so if you can't get her to eat it, you have only lost your time.

This is pretty unique to sweet feed conversion. It is simply the sugar habit that takes a while to change. Usually resolves itself if you hang in there. You a will be glad that you did. If you have any questions just a give us a call. 530-934-9300.

One of mine was a hold out so I just added alfalfa pellets and that did the trick for her. Not much only about a cup. She will still eat some of the RG then some hay and kinda switch back and forth but always licks it clean now!

When I switched my five year old to Renew Gold, he absolutly REFUSED to touch it by itself. The idiot would eat it with a little bit of oats thrown in there though! lol. I just gave in to him and always feed a little bit of oats with it. If I feed just the Renew Gold now, he'll eat it....but he sure glares at me.
I also have a mare that straight refused to eat it at all. Wouldn't even eat it mixed with the sweet feed when I was switching her. She held out for about two weeks. I finally just started soaking it with some beat pulp and oats and she'd eat it that way. After I tricked her into eating it like that, she eventually gave it and now is no problem. Good luck!

I had this same problem but it was on all 4 horses. No matter what I did everyone rejected the RG.  HOWEVER I found out later that my bags were not very good. They were old and crushed up. I had no idea as it was the first time I purchased it and thought it was suppose to look that way.  I gradually started weaning my horses off of sweet feed and about 3 months later tried RG again. ALL HORSES gobbled it up! Not sure if it was because I had fresh bags or because I weaned them off of the sweet. Don't give up, mix in some sweet and gradually cut back. Good luck its worth it!

It drives me nuts when distributors or stores don't ship out Renew Gold in the order that they get it in. Every so often they end up finding some that has been in the warehouse for a long time, and they send it out when it is past it's normal life. Here is how you can tell when it was made. On the bottom sewn strip of the bag there are four ink numbers about 1/2 inch high. The first is the year that the Renew Gold was made. Now this will be a 5 to represent 2015. The next three are the day of the year from 001 which was January 1st, to 356 which will be December 31st. So, the Renew Gold made today will be marked 5034. Always check this when you buy to be sure to get the freshest Renew Gold. If stored properly, it will last one year. If it is beat up or looks like the bag has not been stored properly don't take it. Some stores make no effort to take proper care in their storage area.

Thanks everybody for your responses! I tried more oats with it last night and at least she ate a TEENY bit of it. The RG doesn't appear to be old, I'll have to check the bag for the date - I think she is just a sugar junkie!

can you mix in some apple sauce or molasses? It may be a great feed but even taking that long to switch she may just want something tastier... and who can blame her?! My horses get real sassy every time I have attempted a pelleted feed and mixing in something sweet has helped them muster through eating it every time.

Now I feed Triple Crown Complete and they love it... I think they'd throw a pretty big protest if I switched them. It has that same sweet feed style of texture but obviously it's MUCH better for them
