How long after your barrel mare has her colt do you usually wait to start legging her back up? How long before you start hauling her again, and how long after being weaned before you usually start hauling the colt to see the sights? Thanks everyone :)

There is no way I would haul a baby along with Mom.I always shook my head when I would see someone do that and of course, it's always by the idiots. How many TOP hands do you see do that? NONE!! Especially on longer trips but the risk is just to high and many shots they can not get while that young. Let alone the risk of injury while they are so young and then add the stress on top of it all. No way!! If you bred your mare,put the time and expence into getting that foal on the ground, then let her do her job as a mom and leave them in peace. Then leg her back up after the baby is weaned.

Let the mare be a mom. Leg her up & start running again AFTER baby is weaned. I wean mine "early" at 3 months because my mares are older and start getting pulled down by the foal. So you could wean a little earlier than ideal & start using your mare again then but there's no way I would risk hauling a foal to competitions.

Thank you for your input. Everyone weans at different times so I was curious to see how soon people are usually hauling. I know I have seen all different ages of colts being hauled after they were weaned so I was more curious to see what the norm was for people in other areas. Trust me I have put a lot of time and money into making sure I get this colt there will be no way I will do anything stupid to let anything happen to it.

I read a veterinary article on ulcers. It said 50% of foals develop ulcers. It didn't give specifics but I know weaning is very stressful. I would be hesitant to haul my colt earlier than a it's yearling year. However, I am no expert!

I don't wean until 5 or 6 months. I started riding my mare at home at 3 months. We have an arena and the colt played the whole time. I did not haul the mare until 3 weeks after the colt was weaned.

Thank you! 5 to 6 months seems to be the normal age from most people I have known. We always did our colts at around 6 months which always seemed to work well. I also have a nice arena at home that would be fun for a colt to play in. It's been so muddy here lately all of the horses have enjoyed running around in the sand :)
