Anyone used this Chinese herb powder for ulcers?

I had an acupuncture/Chiro vet pay a visit. He is an old guy who used to be on the track. He suggested I put both my horses on this herb. They only get 1 tsp per day of this powder. I have seen results and it is working. However he said if horses get drug tested their is a banned substance in the powder and they will test positive. So his Jumper clientele have to take horses off of it 1 week prior to show and substitute Ulcerguard. Anyhoo just thought I would share my experience with this so far which is positive and see if anyone has any feedback.

I tell you what...I used Qing Hao San to treat my horse for EPM. It made a difference! I went to a holistic vet also.

I say try it. I know these chinese herbs may not have any research to back them up, but they also don't have the support of pharmacy companies paying universites to conduct studies to do research on their products.

Totally agree with you. One week after my one mare was on this herb there was definitely a difference. She would be really nasty and pin her ears when I would saddle her and especially when I would put her breast collar on. Any touching sensation on per pectoral area would **** her off. No more. She is happier for sure. And running well! However I hope there are not any long term side effects form this stuff.

And what may that banned ingredient?  When I was in China talking to the Bute manufacturer, they said their biggest customer for Bute was in the Philipines.  It was mixed with and herbal pain killer.  So basically the herbal didn't do crap Bute it was the bute that was working.  Becareful of the socalled Heabal blends from China.

Never know that good old heabal may contain Omeprazole.

While it's nice that you guys are seeing good results with this herb. I cannot imagine giving my horse a concoction of herbs etc and not knowing exactly what is in it. Does it list all of the ingredients? Including the substance that will test?

Just because its "natural" doesn't mean it's all safe. Ricin is all natural too.

Honestly, had it not been prescribed by a vet I would not have gave it to my horse. The vet I went to is very well respected in our area.

I did consult with my other vet before I gave it to my horse. I had a friend through a friend that was on the verge of loosing her horse to EPM. I told her about this herb. She went to her vet and gave it to her horse, totally turned her horse around and a few months ago she was cleared to ride!

It goes back to if you don't feel comfortable feeding it, then don't, and obviously consult with your vet.

I was just saying that I had a good experience with a chinese herb that was vet recommended. Do I understand how and why it worked? No, but I do know that it made my horse a totally different horse. He would practically fall over when I would go to groom him. You do have to have a prescription for it, so it is not something random you can just go and buy.

Well I was curious about using it for ulcers...since it's published/described in the literature as an antimalarial drug. (which is why it has been effective for EPM). What I don't understand is how it works/what the mechanism of action could be for it treating ulcers? And what compound in it will Test? I can't find any info on that.

So that made me think it's not the straight drug...but some combo of things...and not knowing what is in that combo would bother me. Whether it came from my trusted vet or a P.O. box in China. I'm just the kind of person that needs to know what I'm putting in my horse.

It's 2 different drugs. Qing Hao San for EPM and Bai Hu Tang for ulcers. :)
Atleast, that was my understanding.

Yes, I was just sharing a personal experience I had with chinese herbs for my horse.

I know it seems odd, and I really was unsure what to think about it all, but I was desperate because my horse was having major issues.

The treatments I got under the consult of the holistic vet and my primary vet fixed my horse.

Before I gave anything my main vet was aware of everything given.

Had nothing changed I would have probably gotten the regular EPM test done and then treated it with traditional medicine, but it worked, and I didn't have to spend any more money on it.
