My horse is lame on the left front, just slightly when trotting on a circle to the left. My vet found a small tear in the distal sesamoid ligament, with some calcification , and no heat or swelling (indicating it is an old injury)
I am planning to give him at least 6 months off and then probably retire from barrels. But I do not have a setup for stall rest. He is on 15 acres with 3 other horses. They mostly stand around all day. I am hoping that being on pasture rest will heal him since it is a quiet environment, an older injury, and I am worried that even if I could build a stall he would be too upset without his buddies.
Has anyone else tried pasture rest instead of stall rest? How did it go? Any success stories or rehab suggestions for this injury?

i had one with the same injury. oblique distal sesamoidean ligament. went undiagnosed for about a year.. Finally found a vet that diagnosed her unexplained lameness, by then she too had mineralization and it showed up on a radiograph... I think for her, we injected it. but there wasn't a lot to do since it was old and already mineralized. he suggested shockwave if i really wanted to. She has come back to run in the 1D with her new owner but ended up with other things that they had to deal with. Honestly, she told me she never had to deal with it after I did.. it was other stuff that came up that kept her from running her.

Yep. Happened on a hind leg. It was fairly severe. If it would have been much worse he probably would have not recovered. Thank goodness I have one of the best horse specialist in the country. He was on strict stall rest I think 2 months. Then I had a 6 week extensive rehab program while he was still stalled. Then he went to pasture for a few months. I used THE Nutrawound and Runners Relief daily. We have huge pastures with hardly no flat ground so he did some rehab just naturally during pasture turn out. I brought him back slowly in the spring and made sure he was in tiptop shape before running him. He has been sound ever since with no problems. Keep in mind he is a huge powerful horse Almost 16 hands and 1415 lbs (in Shape) so there is a lot of power pushing on those back legs. So nothing but good news here.
