Where to you look when going to 2nd barrel?

So when you leave the 1st the head is up and looking to second barrel.
Do you look at the barrel?
Do you look past the barrel to a spot on fence?
Do you look at the ground past the barrel?

My horse is an athlete and can run to his spot past the barrel and turn.
I am having a mental block coming across the pen and knowing where to look and staying up.

At the fence on 2nd and 3rd. My mare is super turny on those 2 and i've got to look past or we will take it down

On super ratey horses, I look to a spot on the fence. On a more free running type, I'll look to a spot just passed the barrel.

On my mare, who is very ratey, I have to look past all 3 barrels (usually to the fence/chutes depending where I am) if I want to leave them up.  So I guess the second barrel is no different than 1st or 3rd for me.

I've usually ridden free runners, not real ratey types, but Ive always been taught to look past the barrel at/to the fence. If you look at the barrel your horse will almost certainly hit it. Or, almost as bad, cut the pocket off, and you wind up vee-ing the barrel. It's ok to look at the ground, as long as you look PAST the barrel. Hope this helps.

Look where you want to go and you'll get there. Look at the ground and you'll end up there too.

first stride out of first look at the 2nd until I get over. Once I'm over I'm looking at the fence.

At the fence but not directly behind the barrel but directly behind where I'm coming into my barrel.

Thank for all your support. Good to know I am not alone.

I have a lot of mental work to work on. Might need to seek professional help.

Best of luck.

Three feet to the side of the barrel, and three feet between the barrel and the fence, I shift back and forth from the two points with my eyes. I keep my hands up like I'm on a pole horse, until it's time to go to the horn. This helps them stand up and not get front endy. I hustle with my legs and make sure their hip stays up under them. A truly broke horse will follow you anywhere you really lock onto, and this is the most time economical path.

My ratey mare, I need to look past the barrel. I don't look at the fence but the spot where I want to sit for her to turn. On my gelding who is ...well I haven't quite figured him out, he doesn't seem ratey yet. But I look to the side of the barrel where I know I need to sit on him to turn. If any of this made sense.

Ratey or free runner, I look at the ground near the entry side of the 2nd barrel...rather than remembering a whole new place to look , for me, it is easier to look at the same place, where I want their feet to go and then make the change on free runner vs ratey with how I physically ride AT the point.

I look directly at the spot I know I need to sit hard and drop my outside rein to go to my horn. I know that whenever I hit the barrel I looked directly at the barrel going into it. Took me awhile to figure this out!

I look in multiple places depending on the horse, pen, what is happening during the run... im driving and no way can I drive successfully only looking at one spot or even past where I need to go, tried it and almost died looking at the fence! Lol
