 I Chore in Chucks

Location: MD | my poor guy is barely weight bearing and his abscess has yet to blow. I know soaking his foot in hot water and epsom salts feels great on him, but we happen to have a high of 15 degrees today with a pretty brutal windchill.
I'm worried about it being to cold, giving myself frost bite, and risking getting him wet and too cold today. Do I soak him or is leaving him wrapped with ichthammol sufficient enough to get through today?
Never had to deal with an abscess when it's this cold and he's this sore. |

| Our farrier recommends that we continue soaking through the crappy weather... If that abscess doesn't blow it could cause a blood infection which could be fatal. The other thing we do is combine liniment, bran, and Epsom salts and tape it to their foot... We've had really good luck with that mixture.
Good luck! Our gelding with poor feet ALWAYS waits for crappy miserable weather to get an abscess... It's not fun. |

This! Though I don't use parsley... what is that for?
I was using the recipe from SKM that's in the sticky up top, but I didn't have alum. I googled drawing herbs and came up with parsley, so I used that instead. ;-) |

Location: United States | Soaking foot wrap for sure! Clean the hoof, prepare sheet cotton or a diaper. load bottom of hoof with epsom salt and lay the cotton or diaper on top of salt. Follow up with a pre made square of duck tape and lay the square duck tape over the diaper/cotton. The follow up with vet wrap. After everything is wrapped, put her foot in a bucket of warm water for a moment until you see bubbles. Then, your done! Rewrap every day. I keep them on stall rest and hand walk until its popped. |
