Location: Minnesota | Has anyone taken their barns cats and brought them inside and kept them in? I dont know if this is a disaster waiting to happen or if they adjust to it.
ETA - when I say "cats", I mean 3...

Some think they have won the lottery and LOVE finally being pampered indoor kitties...some...will try to scoot out the door at every opportunity. I'm pretty sure all cats are born litter box trained...or so it seems... as we have had to make a few indoor cats over the years either during recovery from an illness or age and they all knew what to do when shown the box location.
If they are content indoors that's great. But some we had to allow them to be sorta 1/2 and 1/2. They will make you nuts trying to get out the door.

| We have done that with a lot of our 'barn' cats. They lived their whole lives as barn cats, and now, sadly, we can't seem to convince them to go outside! They adjusted well, with the exception of trying to teach them not everything is something you can jump on. They learned that eventually, with the help of a spray bottle filled with water, and now they are great house cats. A couple of them still come and go as they please, but never had a problem with them not using litter box or anything. |

I love my girls. Their mom showed up in my barn 2 years ago pregnant and had them there. When they were 4 months their mom left the barn one day and never came back. They follow me everywhere and are really more like dogs than cats. They even go ridig with me. |

Location: ND | I accidentally turned my barn cat into a house cat this year.....make that my husband did! He felt bad that it was so cold out in October & started letting Edward come in. My house cats HATED him for a long time but other than that we had no real issues. He still loves to go outside, does chores with me every day regardless of how cold it is & on nice days will stay out all day. But he's perfectly content to stay inside too. Only struggle I've really had is getting used to how busy a young cat is again, he's into everything all the time!

The only thing that worries me is I wouldnt be able to let them outside. Im moving and letting them out to run around would probably not be a good idea. |

Location: Back in MT BABY!!! | I have...I usually start with having them inside to eat and then for a small amount of time after that. Pretty soon they come in when they want to eat and will start to stay longer and longer. I have never had a 100% house cat...they all get put out side at some point in time during the day. That way I don't have to worry about a litter box :) |

We have a giant female that showed up. Absolutely beautiful, about 25+ pounds. The way she's built and marked and the feel of her fur, I can only assume she's half (at least) bobcat.
We brought her in when it started to cool off and also cause the Yorkshire terrorist just wasn't doing her job keeping mice at bay.
The first couple days she just sat on top of the fridge and observed. Which I was fine with. Then she found out we were harmless and she turned into a wonderful pet. She was even gentle and sweet with my 2 year old who can be a little rough.
Well one day she just disappeared. Like a ghost. We knew she didn't shoot the gap because we saw her inside after breakfast and no one had been outside since. We turned this house upside down. She just vanished.
Soon we decided to look behind the dryer....she had dug out the dryer vent (I mean destroyed) and snuck out that way. It wasn't fun to replace.
So now she hangs out under the porch and gets scraps. And pouts when it's cold lol |

Sometimes when they have health issues they start going to the bathroom in strange places, we had this issue and it turned out to be health related.
When I brought home a week old orphaned kitted I kept him in a little rubbermaid tote, I used an ice cream bucket lid with a tiny bit of litter, and he was already litter box trained when he was teeny weeny!  |

| We have a house cat that is a year old, he gets so pampered and spoiled by two little boys constantly petting him that he started not wanting attention! He never ever purrs anymore and would rather be alone, but refuses to go outside! Thinking about giving him the boot and finding a more appreciative friendly cat. |

| I didn't really have a choice. One of our adopted "feral" cats decided she WILL come and go as she pleases. She does what she wants. Thinks.she's a dog as she prefers them over other cats. Sleeps with my weimaraners, who have sadly killed a few but not her! She ain't scared of nothing. |

Location: North Dakota | Some take really well to it and others can drive ya crazy! lol Most of my cats are indoor/outdoor cats (except for two babes that were born in Oct have not been out yet). But I do have two that once they have been outside quite a bit don't really respect house rules as well as the others. They think they can just jump on the counters as they please, etc. That is a no no in my house! No cats on tables or counters! So they mostly have to stay in the entry way now at night and cold days. |

Thanks - I'm pretty sure it's not health issues (other than mental). Not a cat person!! When he was in my son's room there was absolutely no problem with him using the litter box. Immediately after turning him loose in the basement - thinking he would like more room - he started going wherever the mood struck. Same litter box as was upstairs. |

He's done beautifully except that where my little female housecat is super clean in the litter box, he's like having a water buffalo in your litter box. |

Can you really tell them apart?
Our morbidly obese house cat started out as a dumped kitten. At first she was an in and out cat that we brought in at night but after being attacked by something (probably a dog) she became an inside only cat. She still wants to go outside sometimes, but will stand at the open door and not step out. At age 17, she moves mostly from her blanket on the coach to her food bowl to the litter box, but mainly she just wants to be left alone. |
