Location: NC | And no it's not because of Fallon. I have been thinking it over for awhile now. Always reading about how so many others are wearing theirs. And now that my kids want to ride, it terrifies me to let them on a horse without a helmet. So I guess it's my turn to suck it up and start riding in one!
No more hat fines!!
I bought a purple tipperary sportage. |

Location: Where Tall Corn Grows | Good for you! I too started riding with a helmet last year after getting kick in the face along with a few other mishaps. We take so many precautions to protect our horse from injuries and what do we do for ourselves? How it would affect our families if something happened to us? It would be far more devastating than the injured horse. |

| Congrats! I did it when Cyndi died and I have never looked back. I was horse shopping last fall and forgot my helmet once. I was more aware that I was missing it rather than when I wear it. I wear a Tipperary too and make the kids wear helmets as well.
I do like that on trail trees can no longer pull hair out of my ponytail! |

I now wear a helmet when I ride. I think mine is plenty purty. Its a troxel with a turquoise rose and horseshoe on the side. I think it looks nice and goes with all my turquoise stuff for my mare. My husband makes horrible fun of me but I just stick my tongue out at him and fasten it on.
I have 100k worth of knowledge from school floating around in my head. Makes sense to protect the investment. |

What? No pictures??
I plan on taking a selfie as soon as I can get out and ride. This cold & ice is for the birds!
I've thought of one for over a year now. I wore one at a barn because it was mandatory and I never thought twice about it. It was just required. Now I think of what would happen to my family if I was to get seriously hurt. I'm paying all this money for college so I should probably protect my investment.
Not to mention the lavender color looks really cool. Lol |

I don't understand why anyone would make fun of someone wanting to protect their heads.
I've been wearing a helmet for quite a while and one day I forgot and was riding in our front yard and my husband came out of the house and asked why I wasn't wearing my helmet.
I will admit that I would wear one at home riding and then wouldn't wear it at a barrel race. I've had more horses fall when not barrel racing then barrel racing through the years. I now wear it all the time. |

She might hurt me.... but here is TripleE in her helmet...
The last picture the chin strap is loose, can someone please explain to me if this is proper, if so how is this going to prevent the helmet from dislodging and the person having a head injury |

No it is not. You want a finger width of room so you can open your mouth comfortably. That helmet in the last pic had a little more room but if I were proper it would have been a little tighter

Location: Montana | I wear one too almost all the time, btu especially when I'm on the trail because of all the "spooky" stuff out there for my horse to shy at. I don't wear them at barrel races, yet any ways. It isn't a vanity thing, I just don't feel like I can see around it good when I make my run and I feel even more top heavy than I already am (I'm long waisted, and my top half of my body is about as long if not longer than my legs). But I also don't wear hats or anything else, if I can help it, when barrel racing because of the same reason. |

Not to pick on you but not wearing the helmet properly is defeating the purpose of the helmet also giving the false sense of security of wearing the helmet when in fact it can cause a wreck if the helmet slides down and causes a visual disturbance, or sliding back and damaging the neck if the person lands on their back. |

Location: The Great Midwest | When the frozen tundra finally subsides and I can get back to riding I have decided to wear one. But I've decided to not only do it for my safety but in honor of my mother who passed last October from brain cancer. She was a BIG helmet advocate and always wore one. I used to when I was in 4h for 8 years then never put it back on. But the other day I was in the barn and was thinking about purchasing one when I look up and see my moms helmet sitting there. Now granted its Hot Pink (not my signature color like hers) but I think it was her telling me "you better protect that hard head of yours". I am excited to have a way to remember her and to help me feel like she is riding with me. My sister who shows hunter jumpers is also thrilled! |

I will say it also depends on your head. If I wore my tipperary strap that lose, I could push it back over my head (and had that happen once running home, fat lot of good that would do me). My Charles Owens when I was showing hunters, I could get away with a little room. I'm not as big a fan of the way the tipperary fits me anymore and plan to go back to a Troxel or a CO skull cap before the season starts.
It's important to do some beta testing when you're trying on helmets...
1. Make sure your hair is in the same style it usually is when riding.
2. The helmet should be snug enough that when you raise your eyebrows it moves.
3. There should be no helmet movement when you shake your head from side to side.
4. You should be able to gently bend over with the chin strap undone and not immediately have the helmet fall off.
These are the steps that Charles Owen used when they fitted us for helmets on the college equestrian team.
No wearing winter hats and ear warmers under!

Welcome to the club by the way :)

Location: Mississippi | My husband and I both wear helmets and have for several years now. I wear mine pretty much every time I mount up. I feel weird without it now. I don't like the look, but I love the protection so brain protection wins hands down. I am seeing more and more helmets at shows now. Glad you joined the club!

Location: Usually on my horse | I have been wearing one for quite a few years. Wouldn't get on a horse without one. I don't care what people think. I see more and more people doing it. One brain hemmorage in a lifetime was enough for me. And when I got hurt, I was wearing a helmet. If I wouldn't have been, I wouldn't be here typing this right now. |
