There is actually a mission to mars, its not a joke. I want to say it will take place in the next 10 years or something. THere is already a selection committee and some have already been chosen. It is one way and they will set up a colony, do research, etc. THey will have contact with earth, just can never come back here. |

Can never come back? Why is that? Why would people want to go if they can't come back to tell about it? |

Location: North Dakota | Ok so I heard about this last summer because we had a couple locals that made it to one of the top cuts and everyone from what I know thought this was truly legit. But then I heard on a news channel a week or so ago that it was all really for a reality TV show or something. ???

I'm not about to sign up, but those who wish to go are admirable IMO. There are some things that a human can do, test, and learn about Mars that we simply cannot learn from an umanned drone.
As for not coming back, I believe this is because they are starting a new civilization there... hence, they want you to stay.
Space exploration is key to understanding our universe- and the fact that the US is being outpaced by the majority of the world is pretty pathetic. JMO |

They don't have the technology or fuel storage to make a return trip. Satellite technology will allow communication between Mars and Earth easily so we will be able to see and talk to them, they just can't ever physically come back. Right now we have 2 Mars rovers on Mars. Kind of like dune buggies remote controlled from earth. THey drive around, take samples, and test on site. We get results back etc. |

| The geek in me would be tempted...
The animal lover on me over rides the geek! I cannot see myself going on a cruise or on a overseas trip because I would have to leave my dogs home and trust someone else with my chores, so a one way trip is out.
However if you leave Barry, Harry, Nancy and all of their like minded buddies home, It makes the trip to get away from them all that more attractive! |

Common Sense and then some
Location: So. California | Not my idea of a vacation trip...
However, not that long ago, a trip across the Atlantic meant you were staying where you landed for good. Leaving behind everything you knew and everyone you loved... I bet there are a number of individuals lined up and wanting to take on a new adventure. To each their own...
Just leave my feet firmly planted on earth, thank you! |

| I have been following this story. It is being funded by a private dutch party. To my knowledge they are as serious as can be about trying to make this happen.
The people that want to go are doing so as they believe it is a way they can leave a legacy. They will always be remembered.
Although they have done simulations and the simulations are suggesting the people won't live very long. Maybe 60 days? |
