I have always bought horses with a simple transfer of papers. Recently , I bought a 6 year old gelding, that I can get papers off of. Here is the scenario.

I bought him off the people that bred him. His Sire and Dam are registered, he never was. Would this just be as simple as the breeder getting a hold of AQHA and doing the registration like you would a foal.. I would think it would cost more because of age though... which I am prepared to do.

I am going to call them, but wondering if anyone had any experience.. ?

Yes you register them just like you would a foal but it cost several hundred to do it

Stallion and mare must DNA typed. Mare must have been on the stallion report 7 years ago. The 6 year old must be DNA typed. The registration fee for registering a horse that old is high. Being a gelding, if the horse is not a son of Frenchmans Guy or Dash Ta Fame I don think it is worth it. Plus, the breeder may want to go to the trouble to do all that since they did not want to go to the trouble of registering the horse.

It will be close to $600 if you are not an AQHA member.  Will still be about $550 it you already are a member.  And that is IF his dam is on the breeding report.  If she wasn't and that has to be done, and the breeder wants you to pay for it, the price goes up.

ok, thanks for the answers. The breeder is calling on monday to get duplicate papers for one of the mares, and to ask about what we can do about the gelding. I am not sure if the mare has been DNA'd and she is passed on now.. so that might stop us right now if he was not on the breeding report...

so much to learn!

This could or could not be a resale gelding, so that is why I am paper hunting lol

The breeder does not know if the made had been DNA typed?? As I mentioned before, since the horse is a gelding it probably not worth it.
