I'm so confused. I thought appendix is half QH and half Thoroughbred, but I've seen horses whose pedigree is mostly QH with a little Thoroughbred way back who are being advertised as appendix. Is appendix registry cheaper than regular AQHA? Is it required if there is mostly Thoroughbred in the pedigree?

Cost the same amount. If either parent was an appendix and bred to a regular registry horse, the resulting foal will be appendix I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
If the offspring of the 1st TB in the bloodlines never got their ROM that makes all off the offspring Appendix. You also cannot breed appendix to appendix.
Yep that is true, TB/QH cross is appendix registered with the AQHA if that foal then gets a ROM in some discipline it can then apply for AQHA regular registry as a Fully registered QH.
I have two horses that were appendix. I bought Star Room when she was eight years old and she was appendix but had an ROM in racing. Since she is a mare and nice breeding I had her papers changed to the permanent registry. Hopefully one of these days I will breed her. Note her grand sire on the bottom is a thoroughbred--her dame was appendix.
Honey Come On is an older mare and was appendix until she was 17 years old. Her babies were raced and I guess it was not too important to have them registered in the permanent registry. The guy that I bought her from had her papers changed to permanent registered right before I bought her. She also has her ROM in racing. She is mostly thoroughbred.
