| Just wondering what everyone's opinions were on Doc Bar horses. I just got a double bred mare for a barrel prospect. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/lynx+sanheart |

Location: Riding Crackhead. | Doc Bar is in my favorite horses pedigrees but he's been gone so long his name gets awful far down the papers. IMO he's so far down your horses pedigree it really doesn't make much difference. They are tough gritty horses. |

Location: Texas | this horse was given to me as a 3 year old.http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/winchester+doc+bar i have no idea why i even took him because we never got along and i had known him since he was about 6 months or so. I had never truly hated a horse... until him. He would work 10 times harder to get out of working then he would if he just did what you wanted. He would wait until you got good and comfortable on him then he would blow up. Sent him to a trainer and he had the same problem. Had a friend ride him that starts horses for a living and after a week was told how nice he was, maybe it was just me, he wanted to buy him etc. I was supposed to go out the next morning so the guy could watch me ride him. He called me before i got there, said he just blew up with him, come pick him up cause he was nasty.I know doc bar isnt very close in his pedigree but every time i hear doc bar i think of him and i do not want to go that route again.I know it isnt fair to judge them all on one horse, but there are plenty of other lines out there for me to choose from. |

Location: Willows, CA | I loved Doc Bar bred brood mares for cow horses. He was special, but you are right that his influence is pretty diluted these days. They were great, easily trained horses with a lot of heart. As for making a barrel horse, I don't think it matters much to have him on the papers that far back, except for the fact that he bred a lot of good mares. There may be some positive influence from that. |

Location: Montana | I think, for the most part, you'll have a hard time finding a cowbred horse without Doc Bar. You never know...I wouldn't mind trying her on barrels. My mare only goes back to Doc Bar twice (I think), both times pretty far back there, and she does well on barrels. She won't ever be really fast, but I love her. She can be a little difficult, but mostly when she is in heat. Good luck! |

| I just bought this mare in the middle of the season last year. She won the 1D reserve buckle in our district for me. If I can stay with her and leave her alone she clocks near the top every time. I love her no nonsense gritty attitude! She's 21 this year so I will probably stick with the pens she likes and hit a few rodeos this summer! http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/doc+sittin+pretty |

Location: Adopt a homeless pet - www.petfinder.com! | Angelo was a Doc Bar grandson and very athletic and had a big heart. He could be hot though and required patience. When I hear from people who don't like them, that's the reason why. I didn't have a problem with it, depends on what type of person you are and what you want to deal with. |

| Thanks everyone! I actually bought her for my husband to pick up on, but he doesn't think she is big enough. So I figured why not at least start her on barrels. She will be used on the ranch mostly. She does seem like the kind that could get hot if barrels was all she did. We will see! I've had a couple of Doc Bar horses, but just trail rode one and the other one was sold to a stock contractor! They both had Doc Bar on their papers... |

| My Doc Bar was pretty hot but VERY gritty and gave 110%. She WOULD buck sometimes though - not on the pattern but just riding. |

Location: Central Texas | My high school horse was a grandson of Doc Bar on both sides. (yes, I'm old) He could be very cold backed but that was usually solved with lunging before getting on. He never blew up when running just during warm up time and even then it wasn't usually bad. He did have some not so nice attitude moments..he would bite you if you turned your back on him. On the positive side he could run a very nice pattern and dang near left me on the backside of a barrel more than once. Probably one of the quickest, hardest turning horses that I have ever ran. He was fearless. He would go anywhere and was never spooky about anything. Would I want to own one like him again....probably not. |

Location: Red Raiderland | I have a 20 year old (gs x Doc Olena on top and a gs x Peppy San Badger on bottom-not sure where the buck comes from, actually a little crow hopping-no biggie-lol) that is an awesome barrel horse but just not lightning fast. Gorgeous turns. I have had to semi retire him because I just have too many that I gotta get started. I was out in his pasture tonight and when I see him up close I do tend to miss running him. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/nero+lena
I also have a mare that is an own daughter of San Jo Lena and she is a wicked bucker. She is a beautiful black mare but I just don't trust her.........I also haven't vetted her lately so it might be a physical issue but I don't have time right now to even check! |

Location: North Dakota -> Colorado | His influence is so far diluted that I find it hard to call any horse Doc Bar bred now a days. Anyway with that being said, I have a mare that has Doc Bar back where your horse has it, and she was/is one of the grittiest mares. She isn't bred spectacularly, and is now old but everynow and then she'll pull a 1D run or two out of nowhere and hang with the best of them. She tries 110% everytime, but she has some arthritis issues that are slowing her down and keeping me from running her much anymore. I still use her for goats, just not so much barrels. Mine is pretty stubborn and if you start picking on her she'll shut down and you might as well quit for the day because nothing will be accomplished. Just my two cents. |

Location: Texas | I have a 31 yr old grandson of Doc Bar. He was a rascal in his younger days. He was a hotter horse but gave it 100% and was gritty as all get out. I would take another one in a heart beat, but that's not going to happen. He is still hanging out and I ride him at least once a year and he LOVES every minute of it. If horses could smile he would be grinning ear to ear |

| I have seen some really nice horses by dry doc, and doc lynx I have never heard of counterfeits by these two sires, but these guys are still far back.
I would be asking what the sire and dam are like and have done |

My Doc's Prescription would be fine for days and then, wala...nut case. |

| I've owned 3 Doc Olena bred mares. They would all get a hump in their back if not kept rode all the time. None of them ever bucked me off. So they weren't hard buckers, since I'm not much of a bronc rider. The latest one I owned also got hot when you ran her. I don't think I want any more of them, not a fan. However, I think there's other lines out of Doc Bar that are good. |
