I will be breeding my mare for the first time this spring. She's had other foals but this is the first I will be providing feed and care for the whole pregnancy and beyond. I am wondering if a mare and foal feed or supplement is necessary and if so how soon prior to breeding is best to start. What is the best feed program? What changes need to be made as the pregnancy develops or after the foal arrives etc. I have a very experienced breeder to walk me through everything and know her opinion on nutrional requirements just wanting to know what has worked well for others. Like most of us I am on a budget and can't go crazy with adding all sorts of things. I board and included in the board is grass hay in AM, Alfalfa hay PM and some grain. She currently gets a large coffee can of a local complete feed, rice bran poweder and forco. She is a hard keeper and a big mare.

I feed a 14% pellet from a local mill. I feed all of my horses by weight. My mare is 16-3 and very stocky built so she gets 6 lbs twice a day. She gets about two tbs of loose salt in the PM. Approximately 8 lbs of extremely high quality coastal hay, AM and PM. I keep loose horse minerals out for her at all times. She is in very good flesh and has huge babies.

I treat mine no different from my other mine. Around the last month or so I'll up her feed a little bit. Nothing drastic. She is on TC Senior, FORCO, and free choice grass hay. I pull her from fescue a month before foaling.
