I went to ride my horse yesterday and her front bottom tooth was dangling still somewhat attached to the gum after an hour she lost it herself don't know if she swallowed it or what. Now there's just an empty hole don't know if she broke it off under the gum and it's ok to leave it or call the vet I cleaned it out got hay and feed mostly out of the visible area. It's painful for her when I do clean it. No serious bleeding. Anyone have experience w this? I'm assuming she was fighting w another horse over a panel and busted it out. I gave her a little bute

How old is she? If she is young, her new adult tooth will come in and fill that gap.

THIS ^^^^^
I got a horse out to ride once and had a small panic attack when I saw her bloody tooth dangling.   Asked someone about it and they told me it was just her baby tooth coming out, she was about 4 I think.

If you really think it got knocked out and didn't just fall out then I would most definately have a vet look at it. If there is any injury, especially if they are still developing, it can cause a lot of trouble down the road. Better to know now than have to deal with problems down the road.

I agree with the age. If she was older, than I'd consult with your vet about it.

Mine broke his top tooth at the gum-line.  It was still attached.  Vet elevated the gums and extracted the whole tooth.  I'd see a vet within the week.

You could always call your vet and ask over the phone if that is something that needs to be seen. I've never expereinced that so I wouldn't know eigher. Hopefully it's nothing major!

If she broke it off, I would ask the vet to look at it and see if he needs to pull the rest of it out, I would worry about infection setting in, and that is so painfull, I know first hand, I had to have a tooth pull yesterday on my self.

I had a mare as a child who had been ran into the side of a trailer while she was "being broke" and knocked all of her front teeth out.  They all had to be pulled and the ones that grew in behind them were so crooked they had to be pulled as well as she couldn't bite down properly.

She enjoyed warm equine senior soup every night and morning from the time she was 10 (when I got her) until she finally died in her late 30s.

She wore a snaffle when we roped and a hack when we did barrels or just rode.

I would most definitley call a vet

The front teeth are used to grasp their food. If your horse relies on eating grass for all its nutrition it might have a slight problem with one tooth missing. Since you probably provide grain and hay that doesn't need to be broken off from the ground it's growing in you shouldn't have a problem. Horses chew, grind their food with the molars in the back of the jaw. Plus they break the grass with the upper teeth not the bottom teeth. Not having a bottom tooth to help grasp the grass will allow some of the grass to not be broken loose. Hope that makes sense.

Just wanted to mention something that I don't think anyone else has. I've had a couple horses missing a front tooth over the years. You will want to make sure to keep up on regular dental work with her now. Otherwise the top tooth is going to grow into the gap of the missing tooth and cause her mouth to wear unevenly.

This is very true.

If the entire tooth is gone, you will have to adjust the incisors regularly, usually every 6 months to keep this in check. If not it will block the lateral movement of the mandible and cause riding and eating issues.
However, if the tooth isnt removed and if it isnt damaged to the point that the tooth dies, you may be able to wait it out and let the tooth come back into wear.
I would consult a good dental vet or dental provider.

didn't even cross my mind. Great advice.
Mine didn't have teeth at all in the front when I was a child so I never thought about it.

Ouch.
You will have to reduce the upper what appears to be 1/1 incisor as it grows for sure.
It will grow into the void the missing tooth has left.
Do her a favor and rinse that debris out of the opening with some warm salt water. I know it is hard to keep clean but rinsing it will help expedite healing

Had my farrier check it when he was out today to get a second opinion he thinks the tooth is completely out which is what I was thinking. I started rinsing it but at this point it's a waste of time they sit on hay so it packs with hay right after I rinse it lol

Definitely, I have a mare that flipped over on a hot walker at some point (so I was told), but she busted her front tooth and I didnt thing anything of the dental work. But yes in a very short time you'll see the uneven wear on the mouth. Dental work every year for sure.

Even rinsing it once a day will help.
On most horses that have extractions, vets and dental providers will tell you to take them off of hay for about three weeks if at all possible and put on a senior feed. The senior feed tends to rinse out as they drink.

My mare "Toothless Turp " headbutted the ground the very first day of being rode. she knocked out one tooth and damaged the other front tooth, at 2 years old. by 4 she had 2 brown deformed nubs the DVM pulled them and said the accident damaged the bones that the teeth grow out of . she is 7 now fat and sassy. she has no issues from all of it.  (so far) I did spray water over the tooth flaps when it happened and the rest of that summer it get to smelling and i'd rinse it and forget about it till I could smell it again. will look for pictures.

Ditto on the dental work. I have my dentist level out the bottom teeth because the top tooth is not there to wear down the tooth below it. If that bottom tooth gets higher than the others, it will catch when the jaw goes to move while bending the head and turning. This is why a horse may have trouble turning on one side. Very interesting and glad a dentist pointed it out to me!
