Vet says very small fracture of some sort on the outside..very small piece of bone still attached but may start breaking off. Says he's seen knees worse than this still competing and racing on the track. He was more lame in his hocks than he was the knee. Not head bobbing lame and still has pep in his step and willing to work. But it still bends ever so slightly when standing. We opted to treat with Previcox for 2 months and then revisit to see how things have progressed and then inject if needed. I'm just a worry wart. Previcox still not here. Wondering if the knee looks bad or if I'm getting worked up over nothing.

We'll go back in a couple of months and see how it's progressed....he said if it gets worse we can inject it, and if it stays the same its probably not going to do anything. I'm praying it doesn't chip off because I don't want to do the surgery. #1--can't afford it. #2--horse is 16 and not used competitively anymore...and I honestly can't justify it on a glorified trail horse. Vet said he probably got kicked or banged it on something. I'm wondering if he's had this awhile and I'm just now noticing because I'm now legging him back up after not having him for 3 years and him sitting in the pasture. He was limping badly (more on the front right) in February when I left him barefoot instead of shoeing. Put shoes on and I would've called him cured. Then I noticed swelling in the knee and slight bending of leg when standing. Had vet out for knee concern @ end of Feb. We addressed some hind end issues (hocks and SI) and shortly after the knee went down as well. He's feeling good and power-walking and eager to work. I've been lightly riding him, mostly walking and jogging just to give him something to do. But every now and again he'll be slightly off.

Isn't there a ligament or tendon that runs or attaches to that spot, did you have an ultrasound done?
My guess is possible soft tissue injury. I would discuss with the vet about ultrasound, cost versus reward if this horse is only a trail horse.
A few things to help after you exercise or ride if you continue to do, or even a daily treatment is to cold hose the knee for 30 min, and sore no more clay, it is reasonably priced, and a wonderful poultice to help draw the inflammation/fluid out of the knee.

If it were my horse I would get previcox and use it daily for a horse that is not used competitively. Its safe to use long term according to my vet and very easy on the GI tract. And very inexpensive. Probably cost you about 150.00 a year. It will take pain away and inflammation.

I do appreciate the input/responses.
I'll inquire about the ultrasound possibility when he comes out next to evaluate after the 2 month period.
I've got Previcox AND Sore No More poultice coming in the mail (as well as other necessities you seem to need once you start over with horses) so I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of those items. If it's not one thing its another!
