So, all the talk about 'fashionable' or 'name brand' bloodlines has me reminiscing...
What bloodlines were popular for running barrels in days of yore, in your area? Seems like before cooled transported semen, bloodlines stayed a lot more regional.

In my area, in the mid 80's, you were stepping in high cotton if you had a Flit Bar Beggar horse. A girl in KS had one she won all over with, Including at Josey's Junior World, and there were several others that were really nice in the northeast OK, Southeast Ks, southwest Mo and Northwest Ar area. I remember Night Bids and Cat Bids being nice horses. I remember a couple nice Me Quick Too horses. There were quite a few arena horses that went back to Go Man Go, Harlan, Bert and Oklahoma Star, of course back always in the pedigree.

So, who were the superstars in your area?

Easy Jet, Unikia, Starbert, Doc Bar up close, Flit Bar, Sugar Bars, Shawnee Bug, Otoes Wonder, Jet of Honor, Three Chicks.

I'm running one that is JOH/Flit Bar on top, out of a daughter of Apocalypse (paint) who was Doc Bar and Three Oh's bred, was a winner himself and produced quite a few. It's older breeding, and he's not name brand, but still nicely bred for barrels IMO.

One of my first horses was Sugar Bars on top and Red Miller on the bottom. She could flat out fly. She is really the horse that made me start to love speed. The Red Miller's were popular here and they were tough, gritty horses.

My grandpa owned this stud from the day he was born until the day he died at 34 years old.  We crossed him on many mares in Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming and those colts were awesome.  We had running bred mares that we bred him too and I still have one of his foals.  She is 14 or 15 this year and is one catty fast little bugger.

We crossed him on a lot of Easy Jet and Merridoc bred mares and also a lot of cow bred mares.  I ALWAYS look for this old style bred horses when I am looking.  You can not beat their work ethic and heart.

We loved out Tink.  Couldn't have asked for a better minded stud.

He didn't breed his first mare until he was 5.  He was used for everything from reining, cutting, steer wrestling, pony race horses and we even hooked him to the chariot.  My dad used him for Jr Posse and he was the best hunting horse you could have asked for.  It was a very sad day when he left us.

This is the daughter that we still currently have.

Boston Mac, Biankus, and Jet of Honor.  When I first started I ran at a local saddle club that had omokeees once a month - a couple ran a mare by the name of Blazin Jennie Jet - you might know her.  I give her most of the credit for her famous foal.  :)  She was PHENOMENAL!  More grit, heart, and try than many horses I can think of.

My first "real" barrel horse was a son of Flit Bar Beggar! I absolutely loved him. One summer, I did every jr rodeo event on him: barrels, poles, goat tying and breakaway roping. And instead of getting worn down, that gritty sucker got tougher to beat as the summer went on. He won me countless all around saddles, buckles, you name it. He took me clear through my second year of college, then I sold him to a 10 year old girl, so he could get a chance to "raise" another girl :) He's still around, 23 years young, sound, and looks phenomenal.

Also, my dad bred a lot of local mares to this stud in the 80s and early 90s; boy, he was a GOOD looking dude:

Anything Biankus, Jet Of Honor, lots of random bloodlines because "barrel horses" came from other industries dropouts. But these were the better known ones. Juno Dat Cash,  Moon Dimmer, Dinner Flight, Givemalickin, Wranglers Ridge, Kiptys Charger, Tonto Bar, Royal Go Go, Merridoc, too many Three Bars sons to name. I know I'm forgetting some.

There were several good speed event horses by a stud named Ima Reb in my backyard (Oregon).  Most of them were raced and then they went to the gymkana (games) people for speed event horses. Also Destiny Win had bunch of speed event horses in Washington state.  The mare I owned all her life and was my best horse ever combined the two lines.

I had a grandson of Joak. Never had any problem winning anywhere I went. We had a lot of judged shows around here and he would win western pleasure and horsemanship before we ran barrels and poles.

We owned a granddaughter of Poco Bueno-ran barrels, poles, breakaway. I loved that little horse, anyone could hop on & ride her, but she acted so big & bad.
Around here the ones I remember were Easy Jet, Billy Billy Bayou, Panama Edition.

Remember some grand get of Go Man Go. Azure Te was another. We had a granddaughter of Johnny Dial. She's 30 now still kicking and frisky. If there ever was a horse with heart and loved her job Maggie was it. Superior rodeo horse. She would run in anything. Hard dirt or mud up to her knees

Awesome to see someone mention Custus Rastus. I ran a horse my mom trained and ran that was a tough rodeo horse. Wish I had him now. I was a kid then and didn't have any idea how fortunate I was.

This is the horse that taught me how to run barrels. She was a bit goofy on the ground, but tough as nails and honest.

eta: I have no idea why it copied over like that.

I forgot about Johnny Dial! Lots of good barrel horses with him in the pedigree. We had a grandson in the late 70's when I was just a kid. He could run, my gosh he could run. Unfortunately had stifle problems

I had a friend w a Johnny dial. He was not scared to cream a barrel. I'm going to put a lot on the rider there but think it was an inherited habit he picked up also. Now when he was clean he got a check.

We had a granddaughter. She is actually still kicking at 30 something. Excellent rodeo horse. Could run in any ground. Even sloppy mud. We ran her at a rodeo that was pure yuck. Most girls cantered through. Maggie ran so hard the mud pulled her splint boots off. And she loved a crowd that cheered for her. Never a barrel hitter. In the 10yrs we ran her she never hit a barrel. She loved poles. Would knock one occasionally but man did she love to run them. She was the only one we ever heard of with her breeding

My husbands family had one and rodeoed on her as kids. She won a ton. She also had Flaming Jet I think.

As you have noticed the older bloodlines in a given area are the ones each of us knew
prior to 1990. The known barrel racers were WPRA members and competed in the
larger rodeos in a given area... very seldom did their horse get to be well known even at a local level.

The first barrel bloodlines I became aware of in the early 1960's were the OKLAHOMA STAR JR. horses thanks to JANE MAYO and her horse V'S SANDY by Oklahoma Star Jr. and out of a daughter of Bert.

For the next 10++ years Oklahoma Star Jr bred horses were in big demand in Oklahoma and half of Texas by barrel racers.
JANE MAYO
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~okokfusk/histories/janemayo.htm
V'S SANDY
http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/vs+sandy

In the 1970-80-90's ... several bloodlines began to show domination in different parts of the USA .. and became known due to one rodeo star barrel racer and their domination of major rodeos like the NFR when it was in Oklahoma City. This brought new focus on bloodlines that most people had never heard of before.

AREA BLOODLINES THAT DOMINATED DIFFERENT STATES//PARTS OF THE USA

NORTHWEST STATES, IDAHO, UTAH AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
BIANKUS HORSES DOMINATED and JET OF HONOR started the race bloodlines into
barrel horses.

MONTANA, WYOMING, SD, ND and same down in Arizona
SUNFROST, FRENCHMAN QUARTER HORSES, (before FG) and roping horses that would not rate with Driftwood and Hancock bloodlines

OKLAHOMA AND TEXAS ..
OKLAHOMA STAR JR horses, LEO bred horses, and then JET OF HONOR came to Oklahoma and his stud fee started at $250 then increased to $500 which barrel racers could afford.
Immediately girls began to steal their daddy's race track horses instead of their roping horses to run barrels. Anything with JET DECK, EASY JET, or that had JET in their name became desired as barrel horses. Many of your famous barrel racers started with handmedown horses that they trained and made a name for themselves!! (Firewater Flit came later)

FLORIDA SOUTHERN STATES
OTOE WONDER, WONDER OTOE, GO DICK GO (no kin to Go Man Go) and then along came ON YOUR MONEY RED to crossover on these bloodlines to dominate most of the southern and east coasts.

What was interesting was in Texas the famous sire OTOE was considered to be a cutting horse that had no running speed ... What would you pay to breed to this guy today??
http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/otoe

MINNESOTA, IOWA, OHIO, INDIANA
The barrel racers kept what they were doing totally frozen ...
and the world thought of these states as corn growers, beef and pork feeders
and reining horses.

We have all become so internet involved that we forget that it never become a
a part of our lives until AFTER 2000....
NOW we are all pedigree savvy due to better rodeo announcers, barrel associations, high purses and of course the NET!!

prior the internet was being invented by Tim Berners-Lee who invented the WWW (World Wide Web) to send messages between large companies and universities ... the first picture was sent in 1992 while he was working at CERN in Europe and these ladies were singers at a local hotel ..
ENJOY
