The very long drawn out ordeal with my young horse that fractured his face?  I hadn't posted in a very long time because he pretty much got back to "normal".....at least as normal as could be for having a hole in the side of his face.

I just know a lot of board members were keeping up with his progress because it was a bit of a strange situation.  In 2013 we opted NOT to do the bone graft sugery because there was a good amount of new bone growth and the fracture healed enough that he was no longer breating through the side of his face.

He did great all of 2014, back in training, would have been loping the pattern by now had I not had my hysterectomy.

Well....two days ago he developed a horrible snotty nose.  Not like a sick snot, but runny snot.  Thick, but running like a dang faucet.  Started him on meds and watched him.  Other then that, he was a lunatic.  Took two of us an hour to catch him to put him up (he's normally easy to catch but the cold weather had them all lit up).  No fever, no cough, nothing.

Today I spent two hours staring at him in the barn, watching the tiny hole in the side of his face.......at the end of the second hour I saw what I was afraid of seeing.....air bubbles.....meaning he is breathing through the hole in the side of his face again.

I don't know why this is regressing like this.  I left a message with Oak Ridge for Dr. Hague who had been treating him.  So next week we get to start this journey all over again.  We will start with xrays and most likey will end up doing the bone graft surgery :(

Except he was embarrased because his momma grabbed the wrong halter!!!  That was is way too small for him.  But then again I did tell him to stop growing a long time ago!

I just hate it for him because he's got a personality to die for.  Though he got his rear smacked today.  He has the "you scratch me I scratch you" attitude....so as I was brushing him today he kept trying to brush me back with his butt!!

Ugh. I don't know what to say. I hope it isn't anything that can't be fixed.

It should be fixable.  The only reason we didn't do the surgery the first time was because there was so much new bone growth, that there was a good chance it would close up completely.  That and general anesthesia is so risky for horses.

He did great.  We figured he may always have that tiny hole, but nobody thought he would actually regress.  He's not dead or dying, and he's just going to have to sit tight.  I am not going to haul him to Oak Ridge until his snot clears up a little bit.  And the weather changes. Last thing I need to do is aggravate it more.

This is his most recent photo, taken in December....I actually think it was the very last time I was on the back of a horse!!! Doesn't seem like it's been three months since I've ridden. Only another 3 weeks and hopefully I'll be allowed to start.

Ummmm... I don't know if you know about him... But Missouri Senator ... your area (DVM) Dan Brown still works out of his vet office in Rolla... He used to be very greedy about any calls related to horses... Don't know if you have met Doc Winfrey... (same office) she loves horse work too...
I met Dan right out of vet school and I think the world of him because he actually CARES about the animals he works on. So does Doc Winfrey...

Komet I've not heard of them. Dr. Hague from Oak Ridge and Dr. Wallis from Texas have been treating him since the onset of his injury 2 years ago

I kept up with your horse's problems. Just a thought-if the hole is small enough i wonder if going in there and scraping the bone would irritate it enough to encourage more growth and seal the hole? Your vets are excellent, but it might be worth mentioning it to them. Good luck.

Dr. Wallis wants to try to flush it and attempt a periosteal flap again.  We were unsuccessful the first two times. First, we think the hole was too large, we tried too soon, and he was blowing too much air.  Second time a different vet tried because I had just moved and she plain did a horrible job.  He thinks this time since the hole is so small and he's done so well, that it might work.  And if it doesn't then it's not very expensive so we wouldn't be losing any ground or precious finances.  I agree with him and we will see what Dr. Hague thinks.  Anybody in Texas want a visitor???  What I wouldn't give to just take him to Dr. Wallis.......
