Either he is trying to soak some money out of you or he likes the horse so he is trying to make her out to be bad so you will sell for cheap.

Had that happen to a freiend of mine.  The trainer had a horse of mine and a horse of hers.  He liked her horse and wanted it but was trying to make him out to be a bronc so he could get him for cheap.

Sounds extremely fishy to me.. I myself am skeptic of trainers unless I personally know them and I still have them send pictures/videos of updates. Remember YOU are hiring HIM. YOU are the BOSS. YOU are paying. Some trainers will take advantage of you unless you put your foot down form the beginning. Hope it's nothing bad just a coincidence for your sake!

Run!! Get your horse and go find another trainer. If he is a good trainer he should be WANTING to ride your horse with you there. All good trainers will ride the horse in front of the owner, or at least the ones I've ever been around. This is a big red flag, and I would be getting my horse back asap.

Yep, I agree with everyone else.  Go pick up your horse, today.
Did you sign a contract or was it a verbal agreement?
The trainer is working for YOU.  YOU are paying the bill and a small accommodation like watching the first ride, should not be a problem.  BIG RED FLAG here.

I only have personal experience with two trainers, and they both WANTED the owner to come see them ride. They were always honest and up front. Sounds like he's trying to hide something. I wouldn't leave your horse there if I were you.

She was only slated to be there till the end of the month. But I wanted to know if she was fresh, broncy, whatever so that I knew what I was in for when I got her home. I bought her as a broodmare but am only owning mares from here on out that serve dual purpose so if a mare does not ride, or does not ride out of being a bronc with a little time off she won't fit my program thats why it I really wanted to see the first ride on her if I could arrange it without missing work to do so.. It just really irritates me that he knew I wated to see her rode and didn't ride her while I was there or wait for me to get back.  UGH  To be real honest with all the bad experinces I have had and just being in the loop and watching trainers I'm not sure I ever want to raise another baby again.

I agree with everyone else, 100%! Go get your horse and tell that guy to kiss your ***.

I know many LAZY trainers who don't put in half the days they claim they do. It's a shame but some people don't care who or how many people they screw over to make a buck. Even if you had to pay another trainer more money to ride your horse correctly, it would be worth every penny.

I want more information before making a judgement.

Yes you are paying the trainer, but the trainer also has other responsibilities, other clients, families, etc sometimes it is hard to drop everything to do as a client wants.

Did you contact the trainer before, did you book a time, and why wasn't the horse trimmed prior to dropping off at the trainer?

You said it took you 1 hr to get the horses feet done. You wasted that trainers hour, time is money.

I can understand how his day went, as my day can go that way too, if he had to go to town, he may have had a change of heart and thought to work the horse for 20-30 min before he went to town.

Also how/why did you choose this trainer?

Price, I do believe you pay for what you get, if he is cheap then you know why.

Have you spoke with other clients, what feedback did they give

Did you watch him work other horses, did you like what you seen?

When you dropped the horse off, did you specifically say you wanted to be there, and when you left did you ask to be contacted with a time he would be getting on?

I have used the same trainer for years, if the horse won't fit his program, he sends me to one of his friends who will work. Personally I actually only speak with them one or two times during the month, after the first week, then near the end. I don't need updates unless something occurs, other then that I would rather him spend time with the horse then me talking to him.

I do agree with Charyl as well .. but i assumed she had a time set? and he changed it several times? i may be wrong though.. if you had just showed up and thought he could change his whole daily schedule then i understand his reasoning.. if he was just putting it off so she wasnt there intentionally then id be upset..

Re read her original post... She waited around for him to ride the mare and as soon as she left he had time to ride in the time she was gone!! It sounded like she really didn't NEED to go to town but felt she was waisting her time waiting on him.

Can reread it as op deleted it. This makes me go hmmm

My point, if she booked a time, the trainer looked at the horse, advocated for the horse, said the feet had to be trimmed before he would work said horse. I applaud the trainer for doing this.

The op said it took an hour to get her feet trimmed, this is while still tying up the trainers time, I am not sure, but that hour was probably the time scheduled to ride that horse.

This is where I may have been wrong, I thought the trainer had errands to do and couldn't ride the horse immediately, therefore the op left.

Then 10 min later she received a call stating the horse was broncy. I can understand that the trainer had a change of mind and decided to get it over with instead of doing his errands.

As I said to make a more qualified decision, there needs to be more info, this the op would have to answer, if she chooses not to on the forum, fine.

With only hearing part of the story, I don't jump to blame the trainer.

Everyone may be right to say go get the horse, or it may be premature, only the op can answer that.
