Location: Kentucky | Hypothetically speaking, we are looking at puppy. My husband and I both leave the house around 6:45 AM, and he usually gets home around 3:00-4:00 PM and me closer to 5:00 PM.
How do folks that work have puppies? I realize puppy will have to be in a crate, and that it's not the most ideal situation, but surely people who work have puppies?
Do you put puppy in the crate with a puppy pad?
ETA: Coming home in the middle of the day is not an option, and I cannot get two puppies.

| I put mine in the entry way with puppy pads - which would be like being in a crate only bigger. Yes, I know, not the most ideal situation but we too, work all day. It all worked out, I just hurried home as quickly as I could from work. |

Location: Oklahoma | For the first few months I would go home at lunch and let the puppy out of the crate and run him around for about 20 minutes. When he was about 4 months old he started staying in his crate all day. Then after work we would play really hard so he would sleep. At about 8 months old we started leaving him out of the crate at night too |

| my husband wanted a puppy when my twin girls were about 8 months old. he and i both work full time. i told him absolutely not! we didn't have time for a 6 week old puppy!! we compromised and got one from a friend that was already old enough to be house broken :)
my suggestion would be to feed it early enough and allow time for bathroom use outside before you leave in the morning (since young puppies usually eat at least twice a day) and then make sure you always go straight home to let it out after work. MOST pups won't bathroom where they sleep which is why most people suggest a small crate to teach them to hold it.
with all that said, i have NEVER been good at raising a puppy so take it for what it's worth lol. good luck! |

Location: N Texas | I haven't had a puppy in a LONG time, but I like to give them as much space as I can, but also keep them confined to a specific area. Like a laundry room, bathroom, hallway, etc. Somewhere that can be easily blocked off and doesn't have carpet. Also, put down a puppy pad! They can't hold it as long, so need an acceptable place to relieve themselves.
You could also get one of these neat little pens!

Location: In The Land of Cotton | I have also seen where they use the wire fence above with pads in it and then a "house" with their blanket and bed in the crate.
Can't you leave it in a stall? When it is warmer? We did the wire fence with the crate outside for ours when she was little. |

| Get a puppy play pen and set it up possibly in your garage ? If the weather is acceptable to do this if not a laundry room etc. put lots of puppy pads down and a few toys. It will be fine until yall get home just might be harder to potty break then someone that can take them out frequently and on a schedule. A crate is great and I would put it in a crate at night but I would have a hard time leaving it in a properly fitted crate for that amount of time, I would rather it have the option to move around. This is coming from someone that raised 3 puppies this year and house trained them all LOL we are good on puppies for awhile ! ( we raise French Brittany's ) |

| Also please don't get a 6week old puppy 8weeks is the earliest they need to leave their litter mates. They learn so much in those 2 extra weeks people don't even realize the problems missing those two extra weeks can cause. |

That is a tough one then.....I have nothing. I was lucky enough that when our dogs were each pups I worked close by or was able to take them with me. You'll be able to figure something out I'm sure. |

I adopted an older dog....We're not home enough to be fair to a puppy. She's such a sweetie. No worries getting her housetrained, she fit in so quickly. Still very active at 8 and very healthy.
I also decided my parents could handle a 4yo dog looking for a home (I might've done this a few times). We've had great luck with it. My Mom is inseparable from her little buddy, she's had him about 3 years now. They've got 2 strays I carted home, both girls settled in great and have been there 6+ years. We think one might be about 12?. I love puppies, but for someone that isn't home much, an older dog in need of a home can be a great option. |

If you have a barn then I would put the puppy in stall during the day. I am not a fan of puppy pads either for the reason said above. My dogs get to come indoors at night but I don't want them in all day, especially when I am not there. And that is too long for one to be in a crate without being let out, they physically cannot hold it that long when they are that young. If you don't have a stall or a barn room then I'd build some type of kennel for the daytime. Good luck!! |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | When I had a puppy I was working at a grocery store so I couldn't bring puppy to work with me like I can now at my current job.
However, I put puppy in oversized crate, and placed kitty litter box in the corner. I don't like puppy pads because they think they can go inside whenever or at the spot where the pad was.
I got my puppy on friday after work and worked with her all weekend. When she would go to squat I would rush her to the kitty litter box and let her pee in the box by the door. Pretty soon she went to the box to do her business but since she was so little I still had to out her in the box. She eventually started barking by the box when she had to go.
When she got older I took the box away. She would go to the door and bark and I would let her out.
She never had an accident in the kennel. I went home every 2 hours, to let her out since I lived close enough to walk home during my breaks from the register.
I did the same thing with my friends puppy since she worked so the puppy was potty trained before she took the puppy to work with her. She keeps the box by the cubicle entrance and when puppy gets old enough to get in the box she can take it away and puppy can bark at the entrance cubicle when it's time to go potty. |

It's an English a Bulldog puppy so I can barely afford one! Lol. I think I can put her in the bathroom while we are gone, but I may get an oversized crate instead. Not sure yet. Guess I have time to figure that out! Still gotta convince my husband ;)

^^^^ This is a great idea!
Your still teaching him to TRY and hold it but still being realistic.
The only problem I ever see with leaving puppies in confined areas or rooms, they can and will chew on the baseboards, scratch the doors and walls. |

Location: California | When we got our lab puppy, we built him a kennel outside with a cover. He had a crate inside that he could go into to lay down if he wanted, and he had toys and water.
When the weather would get bad, my husband or mom would go over and put him in his crate in the house. I don't think I could leave a puppy in a crate all day. I just don't think it's fair to them. |

Can't you leave it in a stall? When it is warmer? We did the wire fence with the crate outside for ours when she was little.
I put mine in a stall when it got warmer and that worked great! |

Oh, she is adorable, I would be worried too about leaving her confined outside somewhere. Get a different 2nd dog that is less money, I know they are much happier when they have a buddy and they will still be as attached to you and your hubby. They get lonely by themselves all day. |

About 2-3 times a year we do that where I work. I work with mentally handicapped adults and staff can bring in pets for pet therapy day. I have brought in dogs, rabbits and a baby goat that needed bottle fed. We have a lot of fun on those days but I honestly think it is better therapy for the staff sometimes. |

I have 4 dogs, my husband and I both work full time. When they were all puppies, (youngest is 5) work was an hour one way for both of us. Every puppy was in a crate all day, and all my dogs turned out just fine. No issues housebreaking, no issues socializing, no issues whatsoever. They are all happy, healthy, playful dogs. When we get home from work, we are always outside, so they do get lots of playtime.
Hubby and I are a little closer now to our work, so we don’t leave as early or get home as late. It never did, and still wouldn't, bother me to get a puppy with it having to be crated all day.

I don't live close enough to work for it to be possible to run home to let the dogs out, so I've never done that. I've also never brought a dog to work with me.
Seriously, just leave it in a large crate with a puppy pad, comfy bed, and toys. Or get a pen like I posted on page 1 and set it up in your kitchen, or someplace in your house that isn't carpeted. I wouldn't leave a puppy like that outside all day, I'm too paranoid about them escaping.
She will be fine  |
