| Well I am now 29 weeks along with my twins boy and girl. Still feeling good getting thing done around the house so I don't have to do them later. I am kind of torn though as what I am going to do with feeding breast feeding or formula? In my mind I am just not sure if I can do it and especially with twins but then again I want the best thing for them and with the cost of formula wow. I did not breastfeed my first and she is a healthy little go getter. |

| I breast fed both our boys. It is very time consuming but it is the best time I ever spent with them. It is an unreal feeling. It is also so much better for them in the short term and long run. If you have trouble making enough milk for two there is a tea called Mothers Milk, it taste really good and will increase your milk production. Also start freezing milk early . Some nurses are saying to wait for 1 month but I would disagree. That first milk is so good for them. It took me about a week before I was make enough milk to freeze and nurse. I was 41 and 43 when I had our boys so it was a little harder for me but I did everything possible to nurse till they were 1 yr and had enough milk frozen to last another few months. I mixed it with cows milk at the end to stretch it out. I also kept some frozen milk back after they were off it and If they got a little cold or were around kids that had a cold I would give them it for a couple feedings and they didn't get sick. Good luck and enjoy it. If you want to talk ever you can pm me for my number. Hang in there it can be a little difficult at first but it is worth it. |

Location: NC | I pump fed  my baby had latching issues at birth due to a tongue issue. That had us having to use a bottle earlier than expected but with me having to go back to work it worked out better anyways. It is definitely more time consuming but I think its worth it. Heathier for baby, helps you lose baby weight, and MUCH MUCH cheaper!!! I got sick towards the end of my baby's first year and my supply went WAY low so I thought we would switch him to Formula for the last few weeks till he could go on cow milk and was SHOCKED at how expensive formula is!!!! My mom breast fed my twin and I and my sister breast fed all her kids and they both thought it was easier because u can lay down and sorta nod off while feeding. Plus you don't have to worry about packing milk when u leave the house ;-) |

I had bags and bags of milk froze in the beginning. Then we moved and in the moving process it was thrown away. I started stock piling again and our freezer broke and my husband threw that milk away too!!!! I was sooooo ****ed. He was like u pump too much anyways just freeze more. Well not too long after that I got sick, would have saved us a couple hundred dollars if we had that dang milk.... husbands.......

| I formula fed my son after two months of nursing he is now 4 and I nursed my daughter (still am at 13 months) my son has bad BAD allergies and was sick pretty often my daughter has no allergies and has run a fever 1 time. I lost all baby weight at about a 1.5 years with my son and at about 6 months with my daughter. When is comes to the studies that have come out the first 6 weeks of milk are supperior to formula but long term it's not huge difference. I love bonding with my daughter while nursing she jut melts into me and plays with my hair softly and she sighs like thank goodness i can let all my baby stress go. It's hard and time consuming at first but after the get in a groove it's much Easter and convenient. Not to mention our bank account wasn't being drained buying formula. I don't think any women should be shamed for not nursing. There are millions of babies hat are formula fed that grow up strong and healthy these are my personal experiences and feelings.

| I'm thinking would be pretty tough with twins. but YOU do what you can handle. I breastfed mine until it was time to go back to work. Breast pumps didn't work that well so my kids went on formula. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | I'm all about breastfeeding. I nursed one for 8 months and the other for 18. There are benefits to mom and baby both, if you can make it work. It's tough getting started, but then gets easy and downright mindless.
That said, there is no law written that you have to pick one or the other. You can totally have a foot in both camps and make it work, if that's what you need. Part time nursing is better than none. I had major surgery (12 hour brain surgery) when my daughter was 3 months old and had to supplement with formula and frozen milk until my milk came back good, which took about 3 months. She was and is healthy and smart as can be. I worked so hard to keep nursing her, that I didn't wean her until we were both good and ready, hence the 18 months. LOL
She's 6 and hasn't shown any allergies yet, whereas my other one had respiratory allergies by age 4. Who knows why? My guess is genetics more than anything. |

Location: Central TX | Congrats on the twins!! I too, am expecting twins! I have decided to formula feed as I can't produce enough milk, dang sure not enough for twins. My mom couldn't breastfeed either she formula fed us, and my brother and I are just fine. I really feel it's what you can handle. And twins are different. Don't let society choose what you should do, it's what you feel is best for you and the babies. |

| When are u due with your twins? Yes and maybe that will come into play where I just cannot produce enough milk. I guess even if I can do it for a little while it would be better than nothing. |

I would be interested to see those studies. As far as long-term benefits, there probably isn't a huge difference. However, in the short term, there is a difference between the two. Breastfed babies have greater immunity due to the colostrum and other immunities being passed in the milk. This benefit last up until about 6 months.
More than anything, breastfeeding establishes a strong bond between mother and baby, can provide greater comfort, is cheaper and easier (in some ways), and helps mom lose the baby weight.
I nursed and pumped for my first until 13 months. With my second, I nursed and pumped exclusively for 8 months, had to start supplementing then due to an inability to keep up with his demand, then switched over at 10.5 months to formula. That was hard for me because I didn't want to do formula at all and felt like such a failure.
I've had friends who have had problems getting the right formula for their baby and that sometimes takes a lot of experimenting. My friends who have been on the fence have not succeeded breastfeeding. I think that's because the first 6-8 weeks are HARD. It takes serious dedication.
Since you are having twins, I would recommend doing both breastfeeding/pumping as well as formula. You may not be able to produce enough for both babies. Then again, you might. Given that you are having twins, you may just want to pump. If so, there are a lot of articles on Pinterest that will help you learn about establishing your milk supply, etc.
No matter what you decide, it's your decision. Don't let anyone make you feel bad. I'm not sure why we feel it's okay to judge our fellow mothers when we really need to support each other. Being a mom is hard and there is no book to answer all your questions. Just do the best you can and take peace in knowing that you are doing just that--the best you can.

Location: Beggs, OK | First of all it definitely is a personal choice. I nursed both of my daughters until they were almost a year old. I fully intended to do the same if humanly possible with my twins.
The twins were taken by c-section at 34 weeks. I pumped every two hours for three days straight before I produced even a drop of colostrum.... The babies were tube fed for a week or so and had cpap masks, no oxygen, just room air. We did lots of skin to skin time and allowed them to try and nurse. Skeeter was a pro at latching and nursing immediately, but couldn't transfer enough milk to maintain her weight. Sterling was lazy and didn't want to nurse for more than 5 minutes at a time...I continued to nurse and bottle feed them pumped milk for the month that they were in the NICU. They were given some high calorie formula mixed in the breast milk to help them gain.
I was able to pump enough for both of them for 4 months. We supplemented as directed by their doctor to help give them a boost in calories and they did great. They had to be fed every three hours, so I got very little sleep, lol. My husband would help feed when he was home and over night so that I could pump and we could get back to bed. I got very sick with a kidney stone and subsequent kidney infection...and then some sort of flu. I had a fever that would come and go for four days and it completely ruined my milk production. That's where it ended....They've been on formula ever since.
It's a LOT of work...but totally worth it. |

If you line up 20 babies I can tell you which ones are breast fed and which are formula fed. Take a look at the ingredients list on a can of formula the next time you're in a store....then tell me that there's not going to be a difference. |

Location: Idahome | I nursed my daughter for around 6 weeks and then had to start supplementing before going straight to formula. I went back to work after 4 weeks and pumped while there, but eventually I just couldn't product enough no matter what I tried. I kept with it for as long as I could and supplemented the rest with formula, but after about 2 1/2 months I gave up the pumping and nursing because the time it took, I would hard get any milk. She was on straight formula from there on. She is almost 3 and rarely gets sick and if she happens to catch something it is usually gone within a day or two. I was also a formula baby and have a pretty high immune system. I am 26 weeks now with my 2nd and I plan to nurse for as long as possible and pump when I go back to work. |

There's more to a baby's health than what they are fed:
"researchers have consistently found large socioeconomic and racial disparities in breast-feeding rates. A C.D.C. survey in 2008 found that 75 percent of white infants and 59 percent of black infants were ever breast-fed, and in 2013, the agency reported that 47 percent of white babies but only 30 percent of black babies were still being breast-fed at 6 months. Compared with bottle-fed infants, breast-fed babies are more likely to be born into families with higher incomes, have parents with higher educational attainments, and live in safer neighborhoods with easier access to health care services." |

One reason for that disparagement is WIC. Formula is expensive, but if it's provided for free, cost is not an issue in your choice. |

I agree completely. Breast milk is only as healthy as the mothers diet. But, all things being equal....Breast milk is best for infants. |

We have a Radio Flyer wagon that has seat belts and a canopy that they ride around in. I can park them in the barn while we are cleaning stalls or saddling and they play with toys and watch. Babies are happier outside! |

Yep! Parents obsessed with bathing their kids in anti-bacterial cleaner every time they so much as think about touching something are really doing their kids a disservice. Their bodies can't build up immunity to germs if they live in a sterile world. |

My mom breast fed us and the dr told her to wash her nips every time before she fed us because people have bacteria all over them. Well, duh, that's part of the advantage. I'm glad that wasn't a thing by the time I had kids...would have been one more thing for me to feel guilty about not doing correctly. LOL |

| It's a personal choice. I think it's a waste of time for people trying to argue it. And don't tell me a baby is less loved or more detached if they are formula fed or not as smart and so on. |

That was my husband, he would have put her in a bubble if he could.
Our daughter is his first child and my second. So we were not on the same page at all. Of course when they are tiny little things you are more careful but once she got a little older, if she dropped her pacifier on the floor and picked it back up to put it in her mouth my husband would about kill himself to try to take it to clean it lol. He is coming around now, but still sometimes I just have to tell him. "She will be fine, kids get dirty. That is what they do... now grab her because she is trying to eat dog food." lol |

| When our daughter was young we had a puppy our puppy left everything alme of hers except her pascifier he would run around the house with it in his mouth and she would grab it from him and plop it in her mouth.. She loved that thing as much as he did. She's almost 9 and gets sick about once a year and was formula fed. |

My older brother was allergic to everything but fresh goat milk. I'm talking FRESH. No canned milk. Craziest thing ever...
I had acid reflux so bad I could only have formula made special for acid reflux prone babies.
My mom didn't produce milk at all with my sister (she was 43 when she had her)
And my littlest brother had a latch issue and colic so bad his pediatrician put him on formula for colic. (weird thing is at 47 almost 48 my mom started producing milk again for my brother when he was born. Even tho he couldn't have any...)  |

| To the op, if you are even thinking of breast feeding get a lactation consultant right from the beginning, they will assist you on getting a program that works for you.
I would find one now so you can interview them to make sure your personalities match and you feel comfortable with her/him.
If you want breast milk, also look at breast milk banks, and there are Facebook/websites that milk share (in canada this is not legal, but so many moms do it, make sure you check out the individual you get from to ensure they have no communicable diseases.
Formula, is generally harder on preterm babies as their stomachs are not fully developed, research is suggesting these individuals may be more prone to constipation and gi issues later on in life.
Formula has also been linked to gi issues (crohns/colitis/ibs/etc) in adults but not definitely proven
As for formula, goodstart, nestle, etc if you sign up on their website they generally will send you coupons and free product, I suggest start filling out now. It is free so take advantage, I have always told moms to have a can/bottles in the house even if breast feeding as others have said some moms just can't breast feed this will generally show at days 4-7.
As for formula if you go this route I know in canada all formula has to meet good and drug guidelines so the cheapest wallmart brand has the same nutrients as goodstart. Generally the difference is the additives ie corn syrup is added to certain brands (prevents constipation) so you don't have to buy the most expensive.
Also the formula that advertises omega fortified, these have no scientific proof to prove benefit so don't pay more for this.

I would brest feed one feeding and the next feeding bottle feed! They were and are all extremely healthy because of this!!!!!!!!!! Breast feeding passes immunity and bottle feeding gives the maximum nutrition! breast milk varies in nutrition, but formula is always the same. It is the best experience to breast feed, you bond and the baby gets an ammunity, if you add breast milk in to the mix you get maximum vitamins and nutrients!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With all my children I would breast feed one meal and bottle the next!!! It allows the baby to be willing to take not only the breast but also a bottle!!!!!!!!!!! THE FIRST TWO DAYS THE BABY IS ALIVE, OR BORN BREAST FEED ONLY TO GET THE IMMUNITY, BUT AFTER TWO DAYS START FEEDING FORMULA ALONG WITH BREAST MILK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Location: Ellensburg, Washington | I breastfed my son until he was almost two and is one of the healthiest almost 3 year olds in his daycare. I am a firm believer that it is due to breastfeeding. I agree about finding a lactation consultant or a support group. If you are worried about your supply, buy the herb Fenugreek (found in healthfood stores) and it will increase your production. It will usually cause you to have a maple syrup smell but it definately helps with supply. It is hard work and can be painful if the baby doesn't get a good latch but I loved the "portability". Kid hungry at a race, sit down at the trailer, nurse and be on your way. The decompressing it allowed for me after a busy day at work is something else I wouldn't have traded. Good luck! |

| I'm 30 weeks and I'm so ready for this pregnancy to be over, LOL! I breastfed my first for 6 weeks and I just couldn't produce much milk. My son and I both got frustrated and I threw in the towel and started just feeding formula after that. He is 5 now and has always been very healthy and hardly ever sick. I plan to breastfeed with this one as long as I can but if I have to feed formula again, I'm okay with that :) |

Location: In Husker Land | Our first daughter was in the nicu for the first week, three days of that not getting fed. This was due to aspiration of fluid in birth, and really fast respiration issues, so they didn't want her fed by bottle till her respiration issues were better. She was on formula in the nicu, so we kept her on it. I tried pumping, but she ended up she needed soy formula, so gave up. Honestly, I would do this all over again. I am pregnant right now..17 weeks along and planning on pumping and formula. my husband likes to help bottle feed too because he can bond too then. and I like that because it can give you a break too! Worked well for the first so planning on this got the 2nd one! |

This was due to aspiration of fluid in birth, and really fast respiration issues, so they didn't want her fed by bottle till her respiration issues were better. She was on formula in the nicu, so we kept her on it. I tried pumping, but she ended up she needed soy formula, so gave up. Honestly, I would do this all over again. My daughter would not breast feed. She absolutely refused and it. I would try to breast feed, then I would end up pumping so I gave up. I pumped the rest of the time and it turned out I loved it so much more then I thought. My husband could feed her but she was still getting breast milk. Best of both worlds I thought lol. We had our bonding time, but it just wasn't to breast feed. |

Location: Kansas | I tried to breastfeed, and pump.....but it wasn't working out for me. My daughter was formula fed, she had ended up with horrible acid reflux that caused her to puke up blood one day after feeding. I rushed her to the hospital, and was told to put her on a soy formula. Since then, she has been healthy. Hardly sick, I switched her to whole milk at a year old...and she drinks the heck out of it lol. |

Location: dead end road | I nurses my son 10 years ago... And my daughter is 18 months I nursed her until she was 8 months old and my husband wet out of state to work. My son and stepson are 10 and I swotched her to formula due to them being busy with sports, me working full time and being home with 3 kids by myself. We have recently found out we are expecting a BIG surprise in September and I'm really struggling with whether or not im going to nurse. My husband is a pipeline welder and works out of state most of the time. I work full time. This baby is due on our daughters 2'nd birthday. Our boys are 11 and play sports year round and I just don't know if I can nurse this baby. I feel extremely guilty already by my decision but I also have to have my sanity. i am not a woman that loses weight nursing and both my children had their first set of tubes due to chronic ear infections by the time they were 10 months old. I will say Delaney really chunked up and seemed to grow once I put her on formula. She was always in the 20-30% on weight but once I started her on formula she jumped to the 80-90%. It's def a personal choice and one I think only you can make. People that say breast feeding is easy are liars. It's one of the hardest things you will ever do. It's worthit but it's hard! |

The study that sticks out the most to me is where they examined families where one child was breastfed and the other formula fed. They found no differences in development, mental function, or health. Not every woman is able to breastfeed, and I think it's unfortunate that those who choose to formula feed are made to feel guilty for their choice. You do what's right for you and your family, not what society tells you to do
One other thing formula fed babies are more prone to is obesity, early childhood, into adulthood.
The rationale behind this is bottle feeding is easier, babies don't burn calories feeding via bottle versus breast, also babies are over fed via bottle.
Think of it as turkey dinner, you stuff yourself plumb full, after you are sleepy, bloated and need to undo the button on your pants. Babies cannot undo the pants, their stomach stretches each feeding causing more intake then a breast fed baby, which means more calories, and more fat deposited. |

| Thank you all for the replies.. I haven't decided yet what I am going to do. I do know that the twin pregnacy is harder for me physically and mentally. So to breast feed if I can do it will be a challenge unless I do pump like other moms for others to help and bond with them as well. Formula feeding or alternating sounds like a great substatute.. Thank you okie for your honesty about being hard. I am sure it will be one of the hardest things that I would do to.. I have read a happy mom means happy babies! |

Location: Texas | My daughter had latching issues so I pumped for about three months after she was born and then switched to formula because I just couldn't keep up with her appetite. Do what you are most comfortable with! |

| I had a VERY difficult time learning to breastfeed with my daughter but was determined to figure it out. I found a lactation consultant that was crucial to us being able to successfully breastfeed for well over a year. I recommend reading the book, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. It has great information, even for twins. Also, seek out your local La Leche League to use as a support network. And last, get yourself some MILKMAKER cookies! The milk tea is great too but what postpartum Mom doesn't need a reason to throw back some cookies that boost your milk supply ?!?! I bought a subscription and had those bad boys delivered monthly. Just saying. ;) |
