Location: Armuchee, GA, NW section of Ga | I have a nice size barn, 6 stalls wash rack tack/feed room and 6 horses. I have a good sized paddock off each side of the barn. They have access to pastures from either side of the barn. I tend to keep the girls on one side, the boys on the other. The horses LOVE to hang around the barn & paddocks, pooping all over the paddocks so that I keep them scrapped. I just put the scrape blade on the back of my tractor and pile everything up in a pile over on the far side of the paddock to cook. Ive noticed that I am not only scrapping all the manure and other horse related stuff up, but the dirt as well. I have over time lowered the overall depth of the paddock as a whole. What does everyone else do about the paddocks, the paddock base or how do they clean it? Suggestions? Do I bring in a few dump truck loads of gravel, crusher run, sand and if so how to prevent the accumulation of manure over time.

Location: Where I am happiest | I clean/pick my paddocks daily as I clean their stalls. I'm all about small fast jobs and keeping them up daily does that.I never let them go because I hate a huge burdensome job. I feed 2x a day, and I clean when I feed 2x daily. |

This is what I do as well. My runs off the stalls are covered, once they have ate in the AM, I turn them out in the pasture, ride them or they stay in the runs.
Then I clean the runs while they are in their stalls eating in the PM.
I have still had to haul dirt in because of rain/washing out but gutters help a lot. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I believe sand would be a mess to try and pick through but I wouldn't know from personal experience. I would suggest building it back up with something more natural like native dirt so in case you want to grow some grass or anything you can.
I would also agree with picking over it daily. I clean mine daily and they stay very well maintained that way. It takes about 10-15 min to clean both stalls and the run in front of them for me. But mine don't stay in them when they are finished eating. They get turned out after breakfast and dinner. |
