Location: GODS country | Does anyone run in a German Martingale or just tuning and run in a tie down (if needed)? Also, if using on a bit with a shank (ex: sherry cervi, ed wright, goostree delight) do you put the rope/leather strap that connects to reins through the middle ring (gag part that holds mouthpiece) or where your reins are connected?
Thanks! |

| I have run in one a few times. The martingale "rein" goes through the ring the mouthpiece is attached to if using some kind of shanked bit. Never attach to the bridle ring O the rein ring (with the possible exception of running it through the mouthpiece ring first, but can see no reason why you would do that anyways. |

| I run the martingale through the part of the shank bit that the rein snaps to. I run my horse in a German Martingale. My trainer ran him in the World show in a German Martingale. She rigs it the same way. I have a picture on my computer at the house I will post. (I'm at school) |

Location: North Dakota | Putting a german martingale through the same ring as the reins is very dangerous and does not allow the bit nor the martingale to function properly. Always put it through the ring that is attached to the mouthpiece. Personally, I would not use one while running, just for slow work. |

Why would you NOT use for running? I don't like how she will brace on a tie down when we put it on him and like how he stays more level with the GM on...I haven't ran him in it yet, but without it he tends to get he head to high. |

| I run two of my horses in one and have ran it through the mouthpiece hole or the rein hole and haven't had problems. I guess it would depend on why you need the shank bit, do you just need the mouthpiece of that specific bit or you need the shank to control the horse? I have used one with the twisted sherry cervi ran through rein hole... It may be dangerous I am no expert but I have ran one like that |

| I only use my german martingale with my draw gag for slow work. Never needed to run in it, but i would if my horse liked it that way. I say, if your horse runs well in it, then it's not wrong. |

He needs a little help with rating (very powerful and more free running). |

Like I said, I am no expert and don't know the exact mechanics of running it through the rein hole. It may not work like a martingale would normally, but it does work in a different way than if I was just using regular reins. I just know it works for me |

| you could try an o ring combo with a noseband and that might help with the rate |

I disagree with this as if you have a o ring snaffle, both the martingale and reins have to go through the same piece.
How is it dangerous? The martingale will only apply pressure when pressure is applied to the reins, when you release, the martingale releases.
I say the opposite if you have a bit say a spur up bit and put the martingale through the circle at the bit, this pressure can send mixed messages to the horse as now they are getting pressure from two different sources affecting two different pressure points.
Also if you have that middle piece with a martingale, it will actually stop the mechanism of the bit, as when you pull on your rein, the martingale is applying a different angle of pressure to the bit and will not allow the gag action to properly work.
Myself, I generally will start all my colts running in a German martingale, I like to set my horses up for success and when I am seasoning them new arenas, different dirt, sometimes a colt will get stuck, or scared, their head will pop up, the German martingale prevents the head from popping up, allowing me to control the situation faster. As they become more solid, I will remove the martingale.
When I am patterning them at home, I don't use a German martingale until I am about ready to haul, then it is loose for those just incase moments.
I have also had great success running with a German martingale in a a shank hack.
I have never had a wreck, nor have my horses ever been endangered from the German martingale or placement
