I have a mare I'm going to pick up that is having a 7 month old foal weaned. However, my vet feels it is unlikely she will accept him. A mare that has recently lost a foal or is having a 4 monthish foal weaned would be best.

My Facebook Update (copied and pasted)

As of now, the colt is drinking milk replacer from a bucket and is doing really good. Although I feel he can do very well on milk replacer, my concern is him developing normal horse behavior.

We have started inducing lactation in one of my mares. Until she is ready, we will be doing a combination of milk replacer and allowing him to nurse at least once, preferably twice daily from our mare that foaled about two weeks ago. This is in hopes that he will continue to show interest in nursing from a mare until we can get the other mare producing milk. I can only do this as often as I have enough hands to help me.

The research I have found says that raising foals on induced lactation mares poses no risk to the future potential of the foal and by weaning, these foals are indistinguishable from their peers. In Thoroughbreds, foals followed through to racing age show no differences in starting percentages or earnings.

However, if I find a mare that has recently lost her foal, I may still decide to try the "naturally lactating" mare versus the induced lactation mare.

I am sorry if there are messages/calls/texts I have not responded to. I have been so busy trying to decide the best route to take and I am also caring for my 2 month old son. Tarver comes first before any of this.

Thank you so much for all the help everyone!!!

Hi, I'm the one who called from Missouri with the mare who lost the foal. Sure wish we'd been closer. Anyway, sounds like you have a good plan. I hope everything works out, best of luck.

Thank you so much! My vet has located a mare this morning closer to us. She lost her foal last night and we are going to try her this evening.
