I've always had issues with saddle pads rubbing my horses back towards the rear. My 5 star never did that, but I currently have a reinsman pad I'm riding my colt in...and it's doing the same to him. I don't ride with a back cinch right now.....because I don't want to get bucked off hahaha, but is this because of poor saddle fit? He's narrow in the withers, and I'm riding him in a saddle with a 7" gullet...it looks a bit tight on him, but the pad is 1/2" thick.

Is the pad too long for his back? This happened on my sister's little mare. She was really short backed. My gelding has a shortish back and is higher at the hip than the withers so I use a fleece backed pad.

I bet the saddle is bridging.  Have you set the saddle on without a pad to feel how the pressure goes?

not yet, he's a bit spookish and I just ground tie him to saddle him. I'll tie him up this weekend and check the fit. The pad is a tad bit long on it.

I usually use a 1/4 in liner with a wool colorful saddle blanket but thought about trying a best ever pad i bought used, loved it and got another one to match. The new one is rubbing on one of my mares. she does have a short back. would it be horrible to cut it a bit shorter?
