..I'm guessing a bird of some sort but we haven't seen many birds yet up here and these are definitely fresh. And there are multiple holes like this around the same area I think I counted 6 about the same size... probably the size of a softball... a little bigger even?

We had something like that in our Apple trees, inside the holes were full of little wood pellets, I was curious and thought termites. I grabbed a garden hose and it turns out whatever it was hollowed out most the tree! I flushed out all the pellets and found two huge grubs!! We are talking three inch long, as big around as a quarter!! Eww! I ran inside to grab a Baggie to put them in and came back and a bird snatched them all up. Googled it and they were carpenter moths in the wormy stage. They killed the tree though! Maybe that's what it is!

Maybe one of the big wood hens / woodpecker. They're about 2' long and pretty good size. They could easily do that much damage if the tree had some soft bark due to termite damage. They usually dig where there's insects anyhow.

Yeah. They are after bugs to eat, and they stay all winter in Missouri. I've not seen/heard any down here.

oh poo... this tree is not even 30 feet from our house. I honestly haven't really heard one lately so this surprises me, but I have seen plenty of wood peckers before, so it isn't TOO shocking. We're going up with a cherry picker next weekend to see how damaged the tree is.... thankfully I haven't found any other holes on our other trees yet and these holes are all in one central location on two branches.
I'm begging for there not to be those big gross grubs you were talking about ! EW!
