So we are going to be putting a barn up this year and FINALLY moving my mares to our own property. I'm trying to figure out how I want everything laid out and my one concern is manure.  We looked into getting a container to fill, that would then be picked up and disposed of, but the disposal company near us doesn't do that.  We don't own any farm land to spread it on and the farmers around us don't want it on their fields.  How do you manage the manure your horse's produce?

It's spring time. CL for all the home-gardeners.

Unfortunately, my mom has tried that for her manure and needless to say, there aren't many gardeners around our parts! lol

at the stables I keep my horse they have like a huge creek dug out that atleast 7 foot deep and 7 feet wide and it has some running water and we dump the poop in their and after about a week 1 wheelbarrow of poop is broken down and washed away

I disagree with this as you are contaminating a water source

There are drugs and chemicals that are getting into the water source due to the disposal system, and other animals down from the water source are more prone to antibiotic/antiparisitic resistant organisms.

we have heard of some people getting a dumpster with weekly pickup, use it for their house trash and their horses poop. cuts down on bugs and is more sanitary. unfortunately on hot summer days the dumpster is pretty rank smelling!

If I were you I'd use eco friendly pelleted bedding, get a spreader and spread it around your pastures your horses are in when it gets full.

Now thats so wrong  , never dump in running water, that barn owner should be fined for that.

Call your local land fill and they could probably tell you who has the dumpsters you can fill with stable waste. We have a private owned company here that does that. The regular garbage service doesnt do it but when I called the land fill they refered me to who does. Fact we have a dumpster here right now that my husband filled yesterday and it's waiting for monday pick up. It costs us $50.00 per dumpster and dump. It's a bigger, 15 yard dumpster so it's 14 ft long, 8 ft wide and 5 1/2 ft tall. So we just have one brought in ever so often to remove the pile. They said if we wanted it to stay here and we fill it as we go, it would be $200. As then they wouldnt have use of that dumpster. So we stock pile the manuer,  and then call when we have 15 yards and have it removed.

Thanks for letting me know that cause, yeah our local disposal company who picks up our garbage doesn't provide that service. I'll have Hubby call the land fill and see what they say! Thanks!

This may sound really strange..... but I have a stall-walking mare, she also weaves, and she has a certain area in her coral ( which is 90x70) that she likes to do her pacing & stall walking in. I have discovered that, as she poops in her "favourite area to pace ", the poop gets constantly trampled and pretty soon turns to almost sawdust like, real fine dirt. I have been moving her poop piles to her pacing area, and once she tramples it into "fluff", I then wheelbarrow it out into my round pen area & spread it. It makes for perfectly soft footing :)

Invest in a spreader or make some sort of drag where you can break it up easily. We are on three acres right now and just drag it every now and then. Works for us. I hope to get a spreader one day.

We have a 3 yard dumpster that gets emptied once a week. It really helps keep the flies down.

Maybe try composting it? I'm going to give it a whirl myself. We've had our horses on pasture 24/7 but we are putting up a barn and dividing our pasture into smaller turnouts for rotation. Instead of dragging like I have been doing I'm going to start picking it up. I'm going to build some composting boxes and use the manure from spring/summer to spread as fertilizer in the fall and then use the fall/winter manure to spread in spring. From what I have read it doesn't seem like to much extra work. Pinterest has a lot of ideas for building the boxes.

We have a manure pile and it gets mixed in with arena dirt and round pen. The stalls all having shavings to the arena holds water better. Been doing it for years.

Any that we can't get spread on our hay fields, the farmers around us come and get for their fields.  We have one Amish man that gets load after load this time of year.

You can make your own compost. I took 3 Pallets and some t posts and made a compost pile. Or get a spreader and fertilize your pastures.

Not strange at all.. I have a gelding that will dig a hole from pacing... drives me crazy... fill in his holes and then the next time he is locked up...
he just tramples it back down... Have to love the special ones... LOL

My last landlord made a track out in one of their pastures.  It was nice if you didn't want to ride in the arena all the time pluse it was not rocky
