How do you keep your work/life balance, and also horse/life balance?   I have a promising opportunity in my dream job in Sales/Marketing for my current company.   40% international travel, great team and boss.  I'm single no kids, just a horse and small dog.  I would definitely negotiate the salary so I could keep my mare in training or swim her while I'm away.   Just curious what y'all do.

Also, I am sure the excitement of seeing the world will get old eventually....what do you guys really dislike about work travel?

I don't travel for work but my husband does.  He's normally gone two to three weeks a month, but always home on weekends.  He has to go all over the US for his job.  He's done it for ten years now and the travel got old pretty quick.   It involves a lot of early mornings and late nights to make flights.  Weather can wreak havoc on your schedule when flights are delayed or cancelled, luggage is lost. It's hard for him to set up doctor appointments, etc. because his schedule changes so much based on business needs that he never knows when he's going to be home unless he uses vacation time.   With you being single it might not be so bad for you.  Although if you're planning on riding and competing while travelling that much it could be diffucult unless you have a good support system to help you at home.

What an awesome opportunity you have! And you seem to be at the right point in your life -- single and with the funds to have your horse cared for while you are away -- sounds like you could really jump start your career and assure your future. If I were you, I'd down size, get my living expenses low - find a great place to board / keep my horse and go for it! What an opportunity to save for and build your future!

I travel quite a bit for work. I have a girl who feeds horses and dogs while I am away and I usually get to ride 2 to 3 days a week. Typically I get home Thursday night or Friday and so I still get to haul. There are some weeks when I am home so those weeks I do as much as I can and go as much as I want. I enjoy the travel and get to see a lot of places on my companies dime instead of my own. I would say go for it and if you don't like it then find another job. Traveling is not for everyone but it has a lot of perks such as hotel points for free rooms and airline miles so when you do want a vacation a lot of things are "free" from points. Good luck on your decision

I used to. It was VERY hard for me. I was originally only supposed to travel in the winter time. But it turned to year round real quick.  Luckily my dad or mom kept my dogs and cat for me. I boarded my horse. I traveled for up to 3 weeks straight at a time.  I gave up a lot of racing, due to the fact I wasn't home to keep the horses in shape. I learned to check online for any due bills and pay them then. I used to love to travel. Now not so much. That job made me a homebody. I traveled for 4.5 years and was very happy when I changed jobs. Don't get me wrong, traveling on the company's dime was a dream. I saw a lot, met some wonderful people and had good experiences. But there is no place like home. Sounds like your travel will be a lot less than mine was. Hopefully it will be easier for you. Enjoy it while you can and while the company is paying for it.

Thank you all! I appreciate all the positive vibes, definitely helping me decide! Barrelbasher you hit one of the biggest pros right on the head....right now I'm single in a small town in N. TX and I want to see the world....but definitely not able to do that on my dime right now! Thx for helping me see that there can be some balance. I did it for 9 yrs and then took a job where I was home every night. I was home for about 2 yrs. There were days when I missed the road and other times I was as to be home. I was recruited by a company 2 yrs ago and went back on the road. I am in capital medical device sales and this job is slightess demanding so I am home more than I was in my previous sales job. I love it! I give me the $$ to do what I want and is flexible enough to be able to work around big barrel races. The key is to find someone you trust to look after your fur babies.
