Yesterday I was riding my mare and she was shaking her head violently. I could be standing there with her totally relaxed and my hands weren't on the reins and then all of sudden she would jerk her head. My boyfriend thought she was acting like she had bot flies in her nose. Has anyone dealt with those? What is a way to protect her from going up her nose ?! Thanks :)

It's too early here in Ok for bot flies. I'm wondering if your horse is being bothered by some form of gnat? Buffalo gnats (black flies) drive horses crazy and it's about time for them to be out.

Could very well be gnats with all this darn rain but it could be a honey bee too. When at an arena what appeared to be a bot fly was buzzing my horse so I grabbed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was a honey bee and did not take kindly to being smushed. The honey bees are out.

There are 3 kinds of bot flies >>>
Common horse bot .... eggs are laid on body and legs and larvae tickle horse and they lick them and get infested.. horses are irritated by buzzing noise of wings
Throat bot .... eggs are laid high up on neck, side jaws and beneath jaw and larvae make their way into horse's mouth. These bot flies will make a horse go crazy as if they were being stung beneath their jaws. .. I have had to dismount and knock bot fly to the ground and then stomp on the fly to kill it ..
Nose bot .... these are mostly in Mexico border areas and eggs are laid around their lips allowing larvae to crawl into horses mouth.
