Location: DUMPING CATS AND PIGS IN TEXAS :) | I see all the posts about 5 Star and really like them. I'm having a small problem buying one for that chunk of change. I know you get what you pay for, but I'm wondering what other pads do you really like and why? I have spent a few days searching for used 5 Stars and looking at near every saddle pad made and I can't decide what I want because after a while they all look the same lol....not really, but I can't decide....help a sista out! |

| I went even more expensive and went to a csi, and will never go back.
If you don't care about color and want a wool pad Ed wright pads are manufactured by the same company as 5 star, the felting process is done in canada |

Location: North Dakota | I was SUPER impressed with the flex plates in the CSI pads. I got one for free but it was just too thick for my saddle so I sold it. I ended up just getting a hold of Rockyroad and am having a custom 5 star done. I had one before and liked it, but I never notice any difference in my horses from pad to pad. |

| CSI pads hands down, I don't even own another kind. Pad lasts forever and you just buy new liners. I have never had a horse with a sore back since switching to these pads. |

I sure don't lol. It would be for Scorcho, so I'm thinking a decent sized one. I have no experience, so I'm kind of winging it on everything. I think anything I buy would be better than what I have now.....sooooo lol....I'm, at least, heading in the right direction :) |

For the CSI pad. On the website it said $350. I can't cough up the money for the new 5 Star either....not yet, at least. If I really start riding like I think I will, I will upgrade. I'm just at my first nice saddle pad purchase right now :) |

Yes, just buy from their site. They are grey not white. I love my Wright pads. Have also had good luck with Sloan and Teskey's has a cheaper one that my SO bought a couple of years ago. It is not a bad pad for the price, I think he paid $75 for it. It is poop brown and I don't know if it comes in any other colors. |

Would you happen to know the length of your saddle? I have a square skirted Triple Creek for my short backed gelding and a 30" long is just too short for the saddle and a 32" pad swallows the horse... Deanna said they could cut me a 31".
Does the saddle fit him good? If so then you can get a 1/2" pad, but I probably wouldn't go any thicker than 7/8". See... I've already weeded some of your confusion.... or made it worse! |

Location: Phoenix | I've had wool/felt pads by the following companies and 5 Stars are far superior: --Bayou West (good quality, not as soft, stiffer pad, good for some back/saddle combos) --Classic Equine (falls apart, made my saddle roll, not a fan of the wither cut out) --Tod Slone (well made, but not as soft)
I think I got the one I have now around 8 years ago and it looks great. I absolutely LOVE the contour of the TOPLINE to accommodate for higher withers. That, plus the softness makes these pads really stand out. |

That's a great question lol. It's a 15 inch Horton. Does that help lol? I'm planning to upgrade that too soon. I've been looking hard at the Corriente's. We have one that Herbie gave us that we really like a lot. It's a 16 inch and not a barrel saddle. |

Mine are the 1", I don't usually put anything under mine but I try and brush them off after I ride or after the pad dries. I still have my first Wright that I got about 15 years ago. It has seen better days but it is still in pretty good shape. I would also go with the 28" or 30". The newer one I have is a 32" and will only work on my longer backed mare. I am hoping to get a shorter one soon. |

I have no experience with either of those... I know that the Double J's are generally more "compact" (if that makes sense) and you can get away with a shorter pad, but your's might not. The seat size doesn't make that much of a difference, what will matter is if there is still a lot of saddle past the pad. Let me pull a picture and show you what I mean.... but it's probably best to get your tape measurer out! |

| We ride in Impact Gel pads. From what I've seen on here, people either love them or hate them. I love mine. I have 3 felt and one wool, and so does my husband. Our oldest ones are probably around 8 years old and are still in good condition. I think mine are 3/4" and my husbands are thicker, I think 1". I honestly can't compare to other brands because I haven't ridden in anything else for so long. My husband rides his horses hard taking care of pasture cattle, roping, picking up broncs, etc. He hasn't had soreness issues. I don't ride quite as hard as him, but I haven't had any soreness issues either.

You should be able to get a 5 star in your price range with Deanna (rockyroad on BHW). I just got a custom ordered pad 1" thick 32x32 (he's a team roper:)) for my brother for less. And you for sure can find a used pad for under $200. Are you on facebook? Deanna has started a used 5star page that's where I've found a couple of the ones I use. |

I'm just at my first nice saddle pad purchase right now :) You should be able to get a 5 star in your price range with Deanna (rockyroad on BHW). I just got a custom ordered pad 1" thick 32x32 (he's a team roper:)) for my brother for less. And you for sure can find a used pad for under $200.
Are you on facebook? Deanna has started a used 5star page that's where I've found a couple of the ones I use. Can I get a link to this group?!?? No! It's my group! Go find ye own!
You shouldn't try to stop me from stimulating the economy!! |

Location: North Dakota | When I got into the "fancy pad" world I started with a classic equine memory foam, I still have it and use it when needed. I then went down a wandering path, that made it through the 5 stars, CE zone and finally found my way to the CSI (thanks to hubby) Honestly, if you are anything like me (haha) I do not own saddles that fit every horse perfectly, I know there is flaws in the fit and the CE memory foam and the CSI pad are the best of the 4 types I've tried with CSI being the best. I found a used one that came with 2 liners and really, I would bet they are 6-8 years old but they are still very nice and have a ton of life left in them.
edited to add that coolhorse.com used to be the best place to find pads if you're looking for a deal....not sure if they still are.

| I have a 5 star and a wade and like both of them. I've had saddlerights and CSI pads but I didn't like them as much. I would say the five star is my absolute favorite. |

30 X 30 1/2"
I'm a happy little camper! Thanks everyone. I'll give this one a try. If it doesn't work out, I'll sell it to my sister and buy a different one.....turns out, she knows less about saddle pads than I do lol. |

Location: Texas | I have tried a lot of them but the best that works for my mare is a Saddle Right. They are a little pricey however they last forever, My mare is round so its hard to fit her.
This saddle pad keeps my saddle from moving.
After talking to them that is the only one I will use.

The only thing in my trailer are a bunch of 5 Stars in various thicknesses and colors to match my outfits. All joking aside they are in my opinion the best out there. They are the most comfortable for my horses which is my top priority. |

Did you see the 5 Star FB page they mentioned above? Might be an option. I haven't looked at it yet. I, also, PM'd Rockyroad. If she has any used ones or demos, I'll be sure to tell you. |

See, Jenn. This is how I aspire to be!!!! I need atleast the four main thicknesses in each of the threee main colors... and if I can get the super elusive colors then that just broadens my options. |

Something tells me that "fee" might not be so "small". I think the shipping on a six pack would eat me alive
Could you tell me if there are any with white acid washed cowhide wear leathers on there? Black or natural pad is fine. |

I'm not on FB, so there goes my shot at seeing what's on there!! I guess when I get serious about getting another one Deanna can let me in on the scoop! Orrrrrr, I could tell you......for a small fee, of course :) Something tells me that "fee" might not be so "small". I think the shipping on a six pack would eat me alive
Could you tell me if there are any with white acid washed cowhide wear leathers on there? Black or natural pad is fine. I could.....as soon as I get my beer. Don't hold your breath... I um... lost your address. That's really sad, because there may be one...... Well, I guess we'll never know. I had a brand made up... i might even wanna get the new one personalized.
My heart is aching for you.... |

Who knows... those horses could have had cooties! |

Location: Gainesville, TX | I've got a 1/2" thick Classic Equine felt pad. I'm not super impressed. My hubby has a Bayou West pad and I really like it. My trainer rode my filly in a Professional's Choice orthosport pad, 1/2". I think I may try that one on her when she gets back. The CE isn't horrible but it likes to ball up when I go to put the saddle up and its so soft I don't realize. Its going to get permanently bent doing that. There may be such a thing as too soft. I know the general rule is that felt pads are best and the thinner you can get them, the better, but your saddle has to fit well too. My girl has a wide back and almost no withers. A thicker saddle pad would just cause the saddle to pinch. She'll probably be getting a new saddle this fall too. The one she has now is okay but starting to fit worse as her back has changed. Thankfully I think it will fit our five year old gelding in training. |
