I have a mare that is SUPER atletic and quick! She does great during slow work but has a tendency when speed is added that's all she thinks about and will swing her hip out leaving the barrel. Just curious what drills can help with this....

A rule out lameness.
B make sure it's not something your doing by accident.
C keep her shoulders up and square and make sure she's not wanting to come in and drive with her shoulders.
D Rate her down stop at the rate point, use your outside leg and yield her hindquarters to shift just her hip in a step towards the inside, then sit there and then ask her to continue and always wrap the barrels twice or until they relax. Tammy key fisher has a video on this with her horse round pen. Has helped a lot on a mare I'm rehabbing that helicopters.
E make sure she's driving forward!

Full control of the hindend is the only way to collect a horse and drive their hindend up under them. Thus the saying "ride the hindend".

Agree w/above - need to teach hind end engagement so that when you use leg pressure they move off your leg - that way when you are leaving the barrel you use your outside leg and push them back inward.. Phil Haugen has some good exercises - look on youtube he has a couple demo's where he teaches that very thing has some good examples.

I keep the book "101 Dressage Exercises" in my barn and work through it regularly.

Thanks...I'm working with the square exercise now and just doing lots of stuff to make her use that hind end and keep it planted. I'll check out youtube as well!

Mine vetted with a sore suspensory when doing that (only turning left). Just something to keep in mind.
