There is one arena I run in where you almost have to start from the back wall with the first barrel really close and there really isn't room for a circle. I know some places don't allow you to circle anyway. I have a horse that doesn't really know I mean go unless I can chase her in a circle before the run. If I can't do that, she kind of dogs on me in there and sometimes comes in on the wrong lead. I want her to know that were going to make a run and perk up but not get too excited. How would you tap off on a lazy horse when you can't circle or are in a tight space?

Just before I head to the alley at Lawrence, I make Streak do a couple trotting rollbacks because it gets him thinking about going fast. I think he would probably walk to the first barrel if I'd let him, but he's quickly moving up out of the 4D with a little hustling to the first. I'm still not sending him kicking and screaming in there but I want him at least in a high lope.
On Chance I am that crazy girl smacking her leg with her whip before a run, and I will spank him a couple times with a bat going down the alley, then drop it at the mouth of the alley. He will be 3/10ths faster if I do that than if I just try to hustle him with my legs and body.
