I know most feed previcox daily, but has anyone used it only when the horse is having a bad day? I can see using it if a horse has chronic pain, but what do people use with horses with intermittent pain? I understand it is much safer then bute, but Previcox also has its side effects hence why i'm hesitant to feed it daily for a horse that only has a few bad days a month.

It takes a day or 2 to get into the system where but is working in a few hours. I use previcox only when my horse runs. 2 days before , day of, say after. That's it.

I don't use it as it doesn't only affect the stomach (yes I know not as much as bute but it still has negative effect on the stomach) it also effects liver and kidneys.

The question to ask is why do you want to use it, has the horse had a vet diagnose, what were the vets recommendations, have you done everything you possibly can to alleviate the pain before using drugs that will not cure the ailment just reduce the inflammation and give a few extra days, weeks, months, years of competition before the horse is completely crippled.

I just love it when people get so opinionated about stuff - that's like saying we should NEVER take ibuprofen. As horses age and with the wear and tear of hauling and racing sometimes they need a little something to help with the minor aches and pains. I give it as needed especially on long hauls and where I will need to stall for 2 or 3 days......

As needed is one thing...but I don't think I will ever give it every day. It does have unwanted affects on other organ systems just as any NSAID would. You just have to weigh out the benefits against the risks.

Yes, I will occasionally give it when I go to a three day show, especially if I stall on concrete. Usually 2 days before and one after.

2days out,day of,day after. Also have seen a 34 yr old with advanced ring bone gets it everyday now. I've seen this stuff work miracles on him he could barely trot with out a gimp, 3 days later poor old sucker was loping to his feed bucket.

That's how I use it, I load up Thursday-Sun if I have a Sat-Sun race and if I have a Fri-Sun Race I'll use it Wed-Sun and then off until the next loading period

I always give 2 pills the first day (57mg each) 12 hours apart, then one dose daily thereafter.

All NSAIDs have the potential of damaging the kidneys.

To the OP- I *never* use it daily. Like Cheryl said, it's not innocuous. It is one of the most COX-2 sparing NSAIDs we have on the market, but I'm pretty sure I read when I was taking pharmacology that horses can get toxicities from it when used for 30+days consistently on it. I know some people never give their horse a break on it but I just can't do that....

It builds up in the system, so it takes several days to get to the max therapeutic dose. For a big weekend, 3 days show deal, I will give it for a week prior to.

For just a one day Sat show, I will dose Wed, Thurs, Fri, and Sat. Then I give them a break until the next show.

if I need pain management NOW, like for a hoof abscess, I go to bute. I will sometimes run on bute too, just depends.

Banamine i use for smooth muscle deals like colic, or I will use buscopan for colic if I have that. previcox I use for the older, needs some maintenance, I know ahead of time there's a show and I can load them up on it.

Dex I use for anti-inflammatory reasons like airway inflammation, hives, etc..

This may be why i have never seen results because we start giving it wednesday night and just don't see the results we get with bute. I've never had a vet tell me to give it 7 days prior to competition, usually 3 days. But I've only spoke to local vets about it. Now I'm a lil peeved I may have been using it incorrectly -_-

Week out wont hurt, its Labeled and FDA approved for 14 continuous days. I had one horse it took 3 days to kick in, and my colt it acts like bute, I see results in a few hours. Just have to play with it.

GREAT product but do be careful about giving it everyday all the time...The vets and I are about 99% sure that is why CC developed the kidney stones. She and my other two are all on the same diet, watered from the same tank, basically the same exercise schedules, the only difference was her injury to the stifle when she fractured her patella and we used Previcoxx long term for a little over a year and then as needed.
Would I use it again in the same circumstance, absolutely...but just a heads up.

I love the saying that it is safer than bute.. Cox-2 inhibitors which is what previcox is, they have a higher risk of heart problems and stroke in humans...

I've just been able to get it through a couple of different vets, maybe you could call back to your old one and they could ship to you? I've had a scrip shipped to me on a couple of occasions for Previcox
