| What is your plan for the upcoming show season? I'm curious as to what some do to keep themselves fit and diet plans.

| I've got a mare in training right now that is probably going to leave me in the dust. I've started making it a priority to eat healthier, which is hard because usually in the mornings I'm just grabbing whatever is quick for my breakfast and lunch before I head to work. I have started trying to make sure that there is something healthy and accessible already made up while I'm throwing stuff in my lunch bag! Also, while I'm doing chores I look for opportunities to work on fitness. I've done lots of bicep curls with water buckets lately lol. Finally, I tend to stick with things better if I'm the "leader," so I created a Facebook page called "Boots, Lace & Liftin' Weights" where I'm planning to run challenge groups and mainly just keep myself accountable. I've already got a summer arms challenge and a clean eating challenge I'm doing for April. You (or anyone else) is welcome to join me if you're on FB! |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | I have spent a lot of years focusing on diets and fitness thinking I had to be a certain size. I'm not driving myself crazy with that any more.
I'm not cutting out food with the exception of those things that effect my breathing and joints, and just focus on eating more real food, and more veggies.
As far as working out, I'm focusing on getting stronger and riding better and not worrying what my pant size is. I'm not spending a ton of time on it either - I already get up at 4am. I do a few kettle bell exercises (there's a blog post on my Cowgirls With Curves site) three days a week and some stretches and core two days a week for about 10 min max. |

| I also hold some Challenge Groups and have a page Barrel Racing Fit & Fast. Right now I'm doing 21 Day Fix Extreme, which with working full time, having horses to ride, I do my workouts in the morning. So 30 minutes out of the way each morning, then perhaps running on the treadmill at lunch. I've created a great 30 day challenge coming up next month with hay bales & water buckets too! lol |

Location: lexington KY | I look at my fitness lifestyle a little different than most people. I dont eat a lot of processed food because of the crap that is in it. Some people can enjoy processed foods all day on any particular diet and lose weight and if that is the goal that is wonderful. Personally for me, I choose not to eat that kind of food. I view my choices from an over all health stand point. I want to be healthy and I want to feel good. I am not perfect by any means, and sometimes things are hard to avoid but I try my best. Yes, I enjoy drinking beer and it is processed, but I love eating vegetables and lean meats as well. As far a fitness, I am lucky that enjoy working out. I am a cardio queen but recently have changed that to 20 minutes of a hard HITT workout and then weights and pilates.
I think the most important thing is to find what works for you. |

| I started shopping just the perimeter of the grocery store; produce, meat, dairy, bread. It has cut down on my grocery bill and my waist line! I very rarely venture into the inner aisles and when I do it is only for something the hunny thinks he can't live without. To much temptation in store center! I am also trying to run three days a week and I am doing the Plexus system. |

Location: Oklahoma | I told myself back in September when my gelding got hurt that I would be in great shape when it came time to bring him back.... yeah, didn't happen!! I will say that I have stuck with the My Fitness Pal app and have lost around eight pounds (in the last six weeks, so that's really not good! lol). Just that accountability has stopped me from eating something that I really didn't need more times than not and that alone is worth it. I also like to track my steps and find myself doing more walking. I need to get to the gym... but the weather is so pretty that I'd rather be outside cleaning or grooming or doing anything other than working out! I'll be regretting it as soon as I swing a leg back over my gelding though! |

Most of them have great at home workouts that are great and require very little "equipment." I have a yoga mat, and use lots of stuff at home to add extra weight.
Also we just bought a nutribullet.... these things are flippin awesome you gotta get one. I literally eat kale every single day and I don't hate every single second of choking it down. |

| I just feel most don't realize when they spend x amound on the horse, the trailer, truck, the tack, the saddle, all the supplements, chiropractic work, other therapies, keep their horse fit, trained well, all to try to win, but then totally ignore themselves. The jockey is certainly the other half of the team that makes a winning team.
If you aren't fit, your timing is off. You throw your weight and that causes loss of time. Barrel racing is won or lost by a hundredth of a second, less time than it takes to blink. Weight does matter. By having a fitness and exercise routine that focuses on strengthening the core and legs and improves balance and timing you will develop that winning edge in the saddle.
We need to be in top notch physical shape to go to the horn, brace ourselves in the saddle, engage our core, and stay securely seated and in time with them as they take off.
I just find it odd that so many competitors ignore themselves when it comes to being fit. We are athletes!

| Thank you! My 21 Day Fix Challenge starts Monday. My Challenge winners receive a free FIT & FAST tank top...so you can be reminded of why you are working out! :) I wanted to continue to give back, so instead of profitting by telling folks about 21 day fix, shakeology, etc., I decided to use the profits to get folks more motivated. Eventually, I'll have a big challenge group and give a way a tack set! |

| I got sick about two weeks ago so that totally changed my diet. Since then I've been drinking 1 cup of coffee and then water the rest of the day. No cookies, no ice cream, no snacking (unless it's fruit or dry granola). Eating a lunch consisting of vegetables, a breakfast of yogurt and toast or a bowl of cereal, usually a regular meal but laying off the chips, cheese or processed meats.
That being said...I haven't weighed myself but I'd venture to guess I've lost a few pound. I've also been walking on my treadmill and trying the "planking thing". That's HARD |

Location: Texas | Like others have said, I try to eat clean. I don't drink alcohol for personal reasons. I aslo do protein shakes for breakfast, take multi-vitamins daily, and drink lots of water.
For exercise, I do hot yoga 1-2 times a week, go to the rec center on campus 5 times/week for strength and cardio, and I also got a fitbit to make sure I was getting at least 10,000 steps in each day. In my office, I have the big ball to sit on and a fitdesk (think bicycle with a desk) that I use on days I can't go work out.
Finally, my resolution this year was no more excuses when it comes to eating healthy and exercising. I also decided to quit worrying what the scale said and focus more on getting fit and toned. So far, the scale hasn't moved but the way my clothes fit and the muscle definition is definitely improving. |

Location: Desert Land | I joined a challenge at a local boot camp gym. The challenge is to lose 20 lbs in 6 weeks. It's been 4.5 weeks and I am down 25 lbs. My goal is 30 in the 6 weeks, I am just about there.
The workouts are tough and the diet is strict. BUT it's really working. Now that I have been doing this routine for a while, it will not be hard to maintain it. I'm planning to stick to the diet even after the challenge. I had had a lot less stomach issues since starting to eat this way. |

There's a really good app, it does the times for you. You walk when she says to walk, and run when the little jerk says to run.
Also jumping jacks in sets of 25, sit-ups in sets of 10, and squats in sets of 10.
Making a huge difference in my life and my riding! |

I don't eat anything that comes in a box or can and I make sure to take all my vitamins and suppliments. I also workout 6 days a week. Life's been stressful the last month or so and the gym has really helped. I find something so rewarding about being in complete control of what I eat, how much and when. When you start to see results it gets very addicting. |

Congrats! I lost 20 lb in a year and kept it off. We travel a lot, 20k miles a year and all I want to eat when we're gone is Mexican. Lol. I do fitness lender.com. It's mobile :) |

Location: The edge of no where | I really watch what I eat most of the time. No sugar, no wheat products, potatoes, corn. A couple of times a week, I will enjoy a cookie or we might have mexican food every couple of weeks. It's just moderation. I lost 18 lbs last year and would like to lose 10 more. I'm in the gym 3-5 days a week depending on our schedule. If I make it to the gym, it's high intensity interval cardio for 35-45 min....and circuit weights. I do planks and other core strengthening exercises at home. If you're serious about being able to ride to the best or your ability, then get in shape. We expect our horses to be in shape and treat them like athletes....why don't we treat ourselves the same way? |

| I think it is great barrel racers are looking at themselves as athletes, because we are! Certainly I feel all sizes CAN be healthy and you don't need to be a small size to barrel race. I just feel if you are going to ask a horse to perform at it's best, shouldn't the rider as well? We feed supplements, the best feed to try to win. Why quit half way? As riders we are just as important to the equation to win!! |

This is so very true. It just hit me today. I was at the chiro for my chronic neck/back pain today and he mentioned that because the inflammation is so bad, my omega 6's should be reduced. DUH! I spend hours upon hours analyzing EVERY. BITE. OF. FOOD. that goes in my horse's mouth yet it never once crossed my mind that some of that would transfer to myself. I felt just a little dumb today. |

I am tuning up a horse for a friend in nursing school, and we have our first barrel race together on April 11. Last night during a practice run, he slung me around the barrels so hard I felt like a drunk monkey just hanging on for the ride. Even though our running styles are really different, and that has something to do with my un-coordination, I know I need to work on my core to keep up with a horse like this. |

So I figured I'd still be able to help people by helping myself..sharing what has worked for me.. giving away some tank tops to encourage folks... it's nice to hear the success.. my recent Challenge Group lost a total of 35.5 pounds so far! I don't care for excuses and I think they all know that. :) |

| Im down 10 pounds since January. When I stepped on the scale at the doctors and it was showing 158# I said NO MORE. My knees hurt, my back hurt and I wasn't riding my horse like I needed to. I did the cowgirl fit challenge and ended up 2nd with my partner. I changed how I was eating, not that it was bad. I just needed to increase my protein and cut out sugar. I have 13 more pounds to go. Its a slow process but it can be done. |

| Awesome! I'm glad it inspired you! That was my intent with doing the interviews...to get people seeing what they are up against... what others are doing, and WHY perhaps they aren't beating their times. I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the programs I've done through Beachbody. After 10 years or so of just doing the programs, I figured, why not.. become a coach and try to inspire others. I just got a bill for my tank tops, which I use as incentive... $379.. so THAT is where any money will go that I would profit from being a coach. Running a non profit, it's tough for me to do too much just for myself (far as making money from being a coach), I'd prefer just helping others. This way, I'm pushed to do something for myself (keep fit to be an example) and still help others. Hopefully the tanks help people get pumped. (course if folks buy them, goes right back into Dreaming of Three.) |

| So here it goes.. this is something I'm VERY passionate about. I went from 220 to 165- gained about 15 pounds of muscle and now weigh, ( in my profile picture I weight this ) 185lbs. I'm pretty much solid muscle after about 5 years of being a gym junkie, living on a farm and having an all around active life style.
I workout mon-wed-friday, zumbatue-thursday and ride mon-wed-fri-sat-sun. I run with my dog ( he's fat.. lol so I have to schedule time with him. Moms love made him fat -.- )
I do this all for my health, but I notice my riding abilities have increased, my balance isn't a fight and I can 'keep up' with my horse. Who is young and always testing or throwing me curve balls. =)
This is an amazing article to read, I think everyone who reads this will take something from it. =)

I struggle with this too. Crap food is convenient and always planning meals can be exhausting.
What keeps me on track is routine. I've developed menus with grocery lists and recipes for a couple months. Then I just keep reusing them until I want to change it up.
I also get the magazine called Clean Eating. I LOVE IT. Great recipes, meal plans, menus, shopping lists, and good info. Makes it much easier than clean eating used to be. |

JK, although I do enjoy some wine every now and then. I'm not just starting this for show season, but I try to eat "basic" most of the time. Fruit, veggies, lean meats, breads. I cut out processed stuff, (I do miss doritos occasionally lol). I mean, there's the occasional processed thing- chocolate, or french fries etc. here and there, but for the most part I stick to the basics. That makes clean eating happen naturally for the most part & keeps it cheaper :) try to drink a lot of water & not much soda. I let exercise take care of itself- between work, horses and life in general I'm pretty active and I add in steps everywhere I can, (AKA I go out of my way to be the opposite of lazy. Ever. LOL)
I'm not a nutritionist, I just kind of "fell into" this way of eating a few years back, living somewhere else, that was just the way of life, health was better, (even my skin looked noticeably better), it was simpler and just seemed to make sense!

I had been eating primarily healthy for most of my life, but have done some modifying. I didn't start to necessarily lose weight but to be in better overall health (I have type 1 diabetes) and tone up. Since starting I have lost 10 pounds and the workouts have gotten easier. Once I'm done with the 21 day fix I plan on transitioning to a different work out. |

I enjoy going to the gym, but since the year started its not been something I do. I'm focusing on keeping my eating in check and I have a treadmill and some free weights & kettle ball at home I use.
I think the KEY to food and fitness is find what you like and can see yourself maintaining AND to NOT ABSOLUTELY Do NOT compare yourself to someone else. As Fairweather said do what feels right...not everyone has to become a gym rat to be fit!
*fitness classes (get a buddy to come with) *walking on your lunch break or after work (start a group...bring the kids)

| I think a lot of folks feel that they ride alot, or do so many chores, that a specific workout routine is not necessary. Although you may be very active and work harder than the average person, as a serious competitor it’s important that you use your muscles specifically during your daily routine. You need a purposeful fitness and exercise program beyond your regular riding and chores because those activities do not engage all the muscles in your body that fire during a competitive run.
By doing certain exercises consistently to tone, tighten and strengthen your core, build and strengthen the muscles in your legs and arms, you are setting yourself up to be able to react quicker and in better time with your horse. Normal day to day riding and chores are simply not enough. |

I so agree with this for riding purposes! If you're just trying to be healthy & maintain baseline health an active lifestyle may be perfectly adequate, but to be a top performer we have to work out like any other athlete, just like we ask from our horses. |

Instead of going to 2 races per months, I went to a total of 6 all of last year. My job is extremely stressful, and all I have been doing for the past year was feel sorry for myself… and sit around and eat bon-bons…. I knew I gained weight as the jeans got a bit snug… I had to visit with some clients earlier this month and my slacks would not button…. Oooops…. Wake-up-call….
Then I watched the “Racer’s Edge” episode on fitness and found it actually quite motivating. It was/is time to get in shape again, especially since one of my crippled horses just got cleared to start riding again (Yay!). In the past I have had really good results with the “30 Day Shred” workout video. I’m back on it and going on a week. I can feel my body tightening up already and getting stronger. I feel better and have more energy. |

| I do not get RFD TV but saw the posts about the episode. I love that they are showing that those gals who make it to the top, are in top physical shape as well. They workout! You do not see one of those girls at the NFR who are out o f shape. THey are all fit. So what does that say about what it takes to be at the top? Why bother with the $20,000-$80,000 horse, (or more!), all the other expenses TRYING to win... then totally ignore yourself. No doubt I've fallen off the workout wagon too these last few years. I got so overwhelmed with Dreaming of Three, my every minute was taken up. My jeans and clothes certainly felt this! Like I say, not gonna purchase a Dash Ta Fame filly and forget what my part is. |

| sample MEAL PLAN:
meal1:
3 egg white muffins
16oz coffee - protien powder for flavoring
meal2:
1/2 cup oatmeal
1 cup blueberries
1 cup almond milk
1 tablespoon sugar free fat free cheesecake pudding mix
meal3:
1 turkey muffin
meal4:
1/2 cup brown rice
6oz chicken
1cup broccoli
meal5:
2 boiled eggs
fresh veggies
meal6:
6 oz lean meat of fish (tilapia or salmon)
1.2 avocado
unlimited veggies
3 liters to 1 gallon of water throughout the day.
Its around 1500 calories and gives room for if I need a snack like a handful of almonds and aple or a quick protein shake.
Other then my planned meals I just try to stick to lean meats and veggies. No carbs after 3pm.
Meal prepping helps me stick to this easiest and it saves money. Measure your food out. It helps and you know exactly the amounts you need to buy.
Rule of thumb....try to stick to eating foods closest to their natural state. So no processed crap.
WORKOUTS:
30 minute fasted AM cardio
PM weights:
low weights
20 repetitions
4 sets
30 seconds rest between set
1-2 minute rest between exercises
(saves time and creates a HIIT type workout)
5 exercises per body part
different body part each day ex: monday legs, tuesday arms, wednesday back ect.
Yoga stretching once or twice a week.
A great resource is bodybuilding.com they have FREE workouts AND meal plans. Download their smart phone app and you can follow and track your workouts right their......its amazing and extremely helpful.
If I expect my horse to be an athlete I better expect myself to be one too!

| I just ordered the 21 Day Fix yesterday! Can't wait to get started! I also ordered the PiYo DVDs to try. I love going to workout classes, but it really irritates me to have to rearrange my schedule to work around how the gym schedules classes. I'm all about flexibility! |

| I hear ya! I never liked that when I would try to fit the gym in at lunch, seemed everybody wanted to bs..which cut into my time working out. I prefer doing things on my own schedule too! If you'd like to join our Challenge Group, message me. It starts Monday for 21 Day Fix. |

Location: Cocoa, Florida | I started doing CROSS FIT again about 4 weeks ago, I've lost 7 pounds but I've been dieting as well.
My trainer said that after a hard workout I can eat my carbs up to 3 hours after we workout, after that cut all carbs and sugars.
That's been the hardest part for me but I'm doing well with it so far, eating chicken and salads and makings better choices when we go out to eat, like today at Sonnys BBQ I had salad bar and a sweet potatoe, I gave the bread to my friends.....yes it was hard but I knkw in the end it will be worth it.
I LOVE my Crossfit gym, awesome workouts to keep you strong, lots of core work and strength training. |

| I wish there was a food shortcut because I do not enjoy preparing food in any way shape or form. I'm also not good at it. |

| 21 Day Fix is a great program to follow, as all there are is measuring containers. So there is no special recipes (certainly you can find them), but you can simply measure out the appropriate food.. it's more portion control, than anything. It's HAVING a diet, not being ON a diet. You can message me if interested in it, and I can add you to our next challenge group starting May 4.. mainly barrel racers, so we are all in the same boat. Trying to get fit for the upcoming season.

Location: The best kept secret in TX | Being pregnant and due at the end of July I can't do much to keep up with my gelding lol. I eat lots of fruits and veggies, lean protein and have started walking every day after work for about an hour each day. I also do 30-45 mins of yoga in the mornings. After baby is when the real work begins lol |
