My little sisters 12 yr old mare has recently been diagnosed with EHS.  Up until this point she has NEVER had any health issues.  Our vet has done an extensive work up on her, chiropractic work has been done, teeth have been done, checked for ticks in her ears, checked for abcesses in her mouth, etc.  She does this with or without a halter/tack.  This has just started within the past 2 months sometime.  Any knowledge about this would be great.  We have been researching and so far we have found that there isn't much known about it.  There is no known causes and no know cure or even a treatment that has been known to work.  Thanks in advance!!

My mare is a photic head shaker with a super sensitive trigmental nerve. I've had her for almost 20 years and she has had symptoms every spring. There is a medicine, cyproheptadine, that works for some (did not work for mine). What helped her the most was the German nose net (google it--actually comes from Germany and is only around $30). She also wears a Guardian mask during the day. It's very frustrating and difficult to deal with. I was lucky because she only shook during May and June. Some do it year round.

We were talking about this yesterday - there seems to be some benefit in using antihistamines.  Cheap enough to try it out.

Ours had never done it before but reared up one time on hotwalker and banged his head.   Not long after that,  everytime we would walk him out of barn into daylight or ride outside he would shake his head.   We found if we put a darker type flymask on him he wouldnt do it.  Definitely seemed to be aggravated by sunlight.

Contact Washington state university vet school as they published some information about an operation on the supra optic nerve to relieve pressure and apparently it was helpful. I think the paper was published in journal of equine veterinary science some years ago so you can review the info with your vet.

It involved widening the channel in the bone of the face I think. Blocking UV light etc as per the other suggestions here is good for sure.

This may be a bit outside the box, but anything to do with nerves may benefit from high levels of vitamin E an anti oxidant.  Eg Equine motor neuron disease in older horses is suspected to occur with ageing horses on low vitamin E hays for many years and no natural green grass which has high levels of vitamin e in the natural highly available for.

I have  also heard Legend may help as the covering of the nerves like the plastic or rubber around electrical wire is high in hyaluronic acid.  HA is what gives the nerve covering the cushioning and flexibility and prevents it from being crushed when a horse lays on his side and puts pressure on nerves etc.

Ask your vet if she thinks this has any merit or contact the company etc. Just trying to suggest a few things.

Good luck,

Cyproheptadine helped my mare but it made her a little lethargic and I've read that it has shown a tendency to increase colic risks. My mare was also diagnosed with TMJ, put her on an herb that was recommended and haven't had to use the Cypro since then...almost a year.
