So yesterday, I was filling up water troughs. As I was filling them up after dumping and hoseing them out. I couldn't help but think how when I  was little, I'd crawl into the cows water trough at my granny and papas farm. Ha ha, and how my grandparents never once told me not to do it because it was gross. =) It was like a swimming pool to me!

It's just got me to thinking about all the quirking country things I did and how amazingly different and fun my childhood was from the 'in town' child.

I used to spend HOURS in the creeks catching craw-dads. I'm pretty sure I took more naps outside, next to those creeks in the warm sun than I ever did for my mom inside. I had the patent in my family on skinned knees and elbows from climbings trees. ANNNND probably the most chigger bite scars ha ha, and lets not talk about all the things I tested to see how edible they were.. everything from persimmons to 'pickle grass'

pretty sure I went barefoot more than I wore shoes too...

Anyone else have any awesome memories to share?!

Great post! We lived in a neighborhood on the Nueces River so there were few restrictions. It was a nice neighborhood. There was 15 acres across from the middle school that my dad bought so we could put our horses there. The neighbors were soo upset. They thought that it would stink and bring flies and filth. When Dad sold it after we moved, the neighbors complained about how it was going to be houses and they MISSED the horses! A few months after we moved the horses in my mare had a foal early in the morning when people were taking their kids to school and going to work. Mom said there were so many people wanting to help that the mare got a little aggressive. We had to ride bareback because Mom and Dad didn't have time to sit there and watch us ride. Boy am I glad we did. We rode all over that neighborhood and down to the little store by the highway. We rode double with our best friends. That was back in the day when you could buy alot of candy for 25 cents. We had a shetland pony that we worked cows on. He loved baby calves and the calves were intrigued by him, but those brahma cows did not love him! It is scary looking UP at a mad brahma from the back of a shetland, lol.

In the summertime we would wear bathing suits to ride in, and at the end of the day relax in the water trough in our bikinis. We also went fishing with hot dog bits, and caught the same two catfish in the lake over and over again. Also, we'd throw hardened cow patties (cow frisbees) at each other. Nasty, but hilarious.
After the rain, we'd have mud fights in our arena, and end up so nasty we were unrecognizable.
In my crazy party years, my girlfriends and I would go out at night, pull an all nighter, and end up at the barn at 6 am in our clubbing dresses and rubber mud boots to feed horses.

I completely understand this!!! When I would tell people I had my own horse at 9, they'd look at me like I was crazy. Even funnier, I would always walk with granny then 10 miles to the store. Sometimes rode my gelding next to her. It's funny to think about how many times I rode him bareback ( more than I did with a saddle) and every now and then he's spook. I'd land on my arse, walk right over to the nearest fence afterwards and climb right back on like nothing. Children are amazing with their fearlessness! I try so hard to keep that mentality even as a grown up!

My grandparents bull was the only 'cow' I could touch. They had red angus. I used to climb on him like he was my gelding and ride his old butt all over the place.! Boy I was brave when I think back!

Well I didn't grow up on a cow farm but we live on 40 acres and have always had horses and dogs and sometimes cows. We live down a dirt road and our closest neighbors are a mile down the road. One of my fondest memories is me and my sister running through a huge, long puddle in the horse pasture after a heavy rain in the summer and catching tadpoles from the creek in a bucket and bringing them back to the house to show mom. And riding bikes, horses, and four wheelers down the dirt road with our dogs tagging along. We still do that though. :) I think out in the country is the best place to raise children. My sister now lives in a neighborhood about 10 minutes away and we watch her twin 3 year Olds about 3 days a week. They love coming over here and throwing rocks in the creek. My niece is horse crazy of course, and my nephew is obsessed with riding my dad's tractor. It's pretty cool seeing how much they enjoy the outdoors. It's kinda like I get to revisit my childhood by doing the same things with them.

Haha! Yeah we fell off a lot at first. One time I thought I would show off to my friend that was spending the night with me. So after school we walk home through the horse pasture and I decide to show off. I just hop on my grumpy old mare, no bridle or halter. She apparently did not think this was OK so she takes off running as fast as she has ever gone all around that 15 acres. On the 3rd pass I decide she is never going to slow down, so I bail off - right next to the barbwire fence! I still have the scars on my arm and knees. That is so hilarious now! We used to build dirt jumps for the horses and pony until they figured out they could just go up and down them, they didn't to jump. We used to walk all over the place, all of us kids. There was a Dairy Queen a couple miles down the road that we would walk to if it wasn't real hot. In those days, moms didn't work but would send us out to play all day, just come home for lunch. We had soo much fun. No videos, no TV and what a treat going to the movies or swimming pool was. Good times, man!!

the horseback ice cream runs are no joke. Very serious stuff! ha ha. my gelding liked ice cream as much as did. Lord I'd never do half the things I did then with more horses, now. But it made for some pretty solid kid mounts huh!?

It was never easy for me. I was born a poor black child. I remember the days, sittin' on the porch with my family, singin' and dancin' down in Mississippi...

I remembered the days when I sang and danced with my family on the porch of the old house. But things change, and with all the additions to the family, we had to tear down the old house, even though we loved it. But we built us a bigger one.

There was cat juggling, pizza in a cup and my older sister trained to be a cosmetologist, but she couldn't handle the weightlessness

you know, pretty typical stuff.

Man I remember doing chores in my rubber boots then when it was really hot I would be in the creek with my friends trying to catch fish in our boots! we would take our horses into the big pasture and race against each other going as fast as possible( I wish I had that ability to hustle a horse like I used to). trying to teach our horses the stupidest things like how to "vault" or do trick riding on them... I looked like I had been beat up every day I was so bruised and scratched up and I didn't even care! I remember being able to spend 10 hours a day at the barn and the shower water would be mud by the time I got home....

I feel bad for kids that don't get to grow up like that.

me too.. I sit outside and breath the air and remember just how thankful I am it's so clean and fresh in the country. And the smells... there are things I smell that hit me with all kind of memories. I remember playing cowboys and indians with my brother so much that my horse started to think he was johnwaynes Dollar! lmao. we'd have some serious cap gun shootouts ... I always won of course

Racing deer across the irrigated alfalfa field, waking up to the sounds of the ice crashing in the river-you knew spring was coming.  Riding so long helping the neighbors that on the trip home (3-4 miles) you didn't know if you or the horse was more tired.  The sound made when your dad roped a badger and brought it back to the house because badgers were worth some money then :)  The horse and the badger were not impressed.  Shimmying up the back leg using the tail to get on your trusty steed.....for some reason he always put his head in the bridle but wouldn't stand next to a fence-apparantly the tail climbing didn't bother him-haha.  Swimming the horses in the river all day only to find out your horse didn't know how to swim (I think dad just didn't want me to drown)  dang near drowning once during a swim.....So many memories

All the long days as a kido with not a care in the world, we would go to the lake and swim our horses such memories, are we would ride our horses to a country store and get a soda and sit under the big Mesquite tree in the front of the little store and eat our ice cream and drink sodas. Ride down in the creek and ride for hours and not get home till way past dark. My parents never knew where I was, I would ride all over the country site and never worried about anyone bothering me are my friends while we were horse back.
My best times were at the lake, but now everything is fenced off, has buldings on the land that we rode on. So sad that the kids now adays dont get to do the crazy things that we did, I had so much freedom with my horses. And I miss that

We used to rope a dummy off our deck, hop off, run down and tie the goat and we would time ourselves....pretending we were at the NFR!

We would go and try to build a fort out in the trees in the pasture but it ended up being a glorified trip out to the field on the 4-wheeler...we'd FLY through the pasture.

I remember feeding the cows in the freezing cold in the winter.  One time I said we were good to start going and my brother wasn't ready and he fell off the top of the haystack.  Oops!

I loved being off all summer with no job....I would exercise horses all day.  I got burned many a time because I wore a bikini top without sunscreen.

The good 'ol days!  :D

childhood was great until we were old enough for child labor!!

The things we used to do and the things our parents would make us do, would most certainly get us turned into child services this day and age!!

We didn't know what fear was, our parents had no sympathy for stupidity, we thought fun was exploring, playing hide and seek on horse back over 100's of acres, swimming in whatever body of water we could find, building forts, betting each other to do stupid stuff, hunting, fishing, and rodeo. Mom would lock us out of the house by nine in the morning and wouldn't let us back in until it was supper time.

I love stories!!! We used to have this cow that was usually pretty sweet. Me and my friend would rope her, put our barrel saddle on her and ride her double. Then when she would get tired of us, she would take of running and clothesline us on some trees or whatever she could find. Same with the horses lol. Ahhh childhood!!

We stupid kids used to chase the roping calves around and try and rope them on foot.  If we caught, we drug it around until we could take the rope off....Dad put a quick stop to that once he found out!!!!

Did anyone else endlessly harass birds as a child? I mean.. if it laid eggs, I was always schemeing to get them. Still not sure why.. but I was facinated by them.. and frogs.  Especially the geese. They were a serious challenge. And boy. one got a hold of me once. the gander only managed to get my belt loop, but he tore it off!!! ha ha dont think i've ever ran so fast in my life..

I'd be off in the pond bare foot after frogs and duck eggs. lmbo

My grandpa had a big Brahma Bull that was halter broke, he came with the name "Snuggles". He was pretty cool... but we terrorized that bull so much you couldn't walk outside without a big stick in your hand. Ooops.

Me and my friend would tie my horse up (cause he was shortest and least likely to kill us) to a fence. We would get a running start and try to jump over is butt into the saddle like they did in the movies. We would RUN... then Bam we would hit his tail bone about boob high. He would tuck his butt and stand there and wait for the next one. That poor horse, looking back we put him through absolute hell and not once did he ever buck, kick, or try to kill us in any way lol. He did spook once, but my friend and I were riding double, bareback, in the dark, and a boy we went to school with came crashing out of the bushes swinging a piece of water hose. The horse did spook on that one, but we landed right next to him and he didn't move after that. Just waited for us to get back on lol.

Oh and once I was going to make him all pretty. So I show Sheened the crud out of him... then put my saddle on. Well my mom said "Make sure you check his cinch." I thought about how over protective she was and said "I will mom." So off we went to get a burger. Well after I got my burger I was going to get back on (without checking my cinch) and my saddle slid all the way under his belly. The horn was between his front legs. He didn't move a muscle. I struggled forever trying to get the cinch undone so I could some how fix it. I was like 9. Anyway finally some cowboy came and helped. PLOP the saddle hit the ground under the horse. Horse didn't move, and cowboy said "There ya go" and walked off lol. So since I couldn't lift my mom's heavy roping saddle I was riding in I left it there and rode bareback to my mom on the other side of the arena. She said "Shareasa Dawn what did you do and WHERE is my saddle?!" I still haven't lived that one down lol.

I went to one friend's house one time, and they were cleaning out the horse tank so we could swim in it. I said "You clean it?" her mom said "uh... yes.". I said "Oh we don't, it makes it more fun with all the green stuff! It is like a slip n' slide and a pool mixed together!". I can still see the disgusted look on her face lol.

This.. Lol the green squishy unknown between my toes. I remember it well!!

pinx05 - 2015-03-26 4:30 PM My grandpa had a big Brahma Bull that was halter broke, he came with the name "Snuggles".

We did clean our horse tanks, we just didn't make a point of it before we swam in them every time lol.

I'd be off in the pond bare foot after frogs and duck eggs. lmbo

Yes!!! I was forever scheming on how I was going to catch myself a pet bird, I succeeded several times but my parents made me turn them loose I made traps for them and everything. Same with squirrels and any other little animal that I thought I could get my hands on.

We rode everywhere down the roads to the local ponds to swim, in the winter we would dally a plastic kids sled to my horse and fly around trying to knock each other off. We rode bareback more than with saddles and were always trying some new stunt.

We had every animal under the sun and tried to teach them all tricks from pigs to house cats. I had one cat that I taught to sit up and beg and I would stick him in an old baby stroller and put sunglasses on him and he would roll around in that stroller for hours.

We also spent hours and hours in the creek or the irrigation ditch catching water skippers fish you name it

We used to take novices (i.e. my brothers girlfriends) on trail rides through the Austrailian pine trees that bordered the orange groves and then take off.  We would duck under the branches and the banana spider webs but  the novice would be like smack.  Good fun.  Then there were the moonlight rides.  It was so fun telling ghost stories and scaring the kids.  I do feel sorry for the kids now, they can't do anything.  The stuff we did back then would get us arrested now and it was just in good fun.
