Thinking about legging up my 21 year old mare for this summer and running at select races. Looking for advice on keeping them in shape, supplements, precautions, ect.
She's healthy, never took a lame step and just sitting out there bored.
I would breed her but by the time I was stable enough to support raising a foal she was 19 and a maiden mare. So I didn't take the risk.

I ran my old gelding hard until he was 24... Kept him in good shape and he still loved competing. He didnt need tuning on at all, so I would pony him during the week for less stress on his joints (off another horse and the 4-wheeler) to keep him in shape... Very diligent on his injections, and Also kept him on Adequan, Platinum, and gave him lots of turnout time.
My experience with the older ones is if you ever let them head downhill on body condition.. they go fast and dont come back easy.
